Awkward moments

Has anyone had awkward moments or responses when asking guests the standard questions? I did...

FI kept forgetting to ask one of his friend's for his girlfriend's name. It said on Facebook that he was in a relationship but didn't specify with whom - FI just looked up recent pictures of his friend and guessed a girl's name. But I wanted to confirm.

So I sent this guy a friendly message asking for his SO's name. And he responds that they broke up a while ago, ending his sentence with a smiley face. I replied how sorry I was and thank you for confirming and tried to be sensitive and ask how his job was going, what's he been up to. He didn't respond.

WHOOPS. I'm going to let FI handle his own friends from now on...

So maybe it's not super awkward - can any of you out-awkward me?

  • I can't say anything like that happened to us.

This wasn't bad, but one of my gay friends was dating a guy when invitations went out. When he sent back his RSVP, it was just for one, so I texted him to say, "Is Paul not coming?" He replied, "We broke up. Thanks for rubbing it in!"  He was totally kidding about me rubbing it in, but I still felt bad.

I made the mistake of calling the people who RSVP'ed yes and then no-showed to the wedding.

At the time, I truly just wanted to know that they were okay (Thy were some close friends and family of DH & I)...but the exchange of conversation ended up being much more awkward than I expected.

  • Psst, that's nothing. I asked FH to collect addresses for me to send Christmas cards. I asked for the correct spelling of friends names and their spouses and kids names and I got names completely butchered. I sent some out with names spelt wrong but that's how he gave me them. He asked his mom for her list and didn't know half of his cousins' names. Heck, even his guest list has names completely butchered, like Johnny Frenz is spelt Johnny Friends. Most of this could be solved by him looking FB but he hates logging in. He also has some friends that go by nicknames and he hardly even knows the guys' given names.

  • @kjhowd - that's hilarious.

I texted a friend to confirm if she and her bf (now FI) were still together b/c she had no relationship status on FB (I know in college they were listed in a relationship).  She laughed it off and told me they were still together but said she gets asked ALL the time due to their FB statuses.

@Kate61487 - my mom felt bad about it.  She had promised me that she wouldn't say or do anything untoward in relation to my dad.  I was too happy to care.

  • @kjhowd - That is so, so funny. That totally outdoes my mildly awkward moment.

I figure as I am their youngest child and the last to get married, they being 70 and 75, living in different states, they will probably never see each other again so it doesn't matter much.  After some BS my dad pulled, I figure it was my mom's parting shot.

  • My MOH got a little awkward yesterday when I asked her if she'd like her brand new bf/interest (not sure which it is) invited by name or if she'd prefer a generic "and guest." She was like "I don't know? I think so? I mean I hope we'll be together then? Whatever you want." She dated a string of commitment phobes before her current guy, so I think that was the reason for the hesitation. She seems really happy with him in general :)

  • I had an awkward Thank You card response. FI and I went to a family reunion and they threw me a surprise shower. His 3rd cousin's girlfriend was there and gave me a nice gift so I sent her a thank you card to the address of 3rd cousin. 3rd cousin opens the envelope and card and writes over my message, "We broke up!!!". Then he sticks it in a new envelope and mails it back to me. What am I supposed to do with it now??

I'm just hoping he doesn't remember it by the next reunion this summer..

Maybe guys are different, but I would have just forwarded it on to her and let you know separately.

  • Well I was pretty on top of getting the TY cards out and they were together at the time of the shower so I assumed the break up was very recent. And maybe he just didn't take it well.. ??

I doubt it will come up when we see him again but it's still awkward, you know?

definitely awkward, but he handled it super poorly so at least you don't have anything to feel bad about.

Oh yes!!! I just had a really bad one last Sunday at church no less!!!! Since my FI proposed in front of our congregation in Dec. everyone keeps asking the # 1 question, "Did you guys set a date?" I answer it at least 2x per service. I have no idea how much he is asked! Im sure more because he is there more. I joked that he should just make it part of our Sunday announcements or have a Q&A session! Nobody has ever asked me where we are getting married. Im sure they assume at church. (a whole other topic of stress)

Well Sunday someone that I dont know or have ever seen before approached and gave his congrats! He asked me when the big day was. I answered. He then said where are you guys making it official? I answered blah blah blah resort. He asked, "why not here?" I said, " Oh no, I dont like green and this carpet is so terribly green and old and dirty!" He then informed me that it was him who, not only installed the carpet 10 years ago,  but cleans it monthly!!!!!!!!  OMG....I wanted to die!!!!!! (he did admit that it is time for a new one tho)

I recently had a mortifying realization when I sent my STDs.  My 2nd cousin is on her 3rd (I think) marriage. She had hubby #2's last name for awhile and then got remarried and changed it.  I was using my a previous invitation list for names/addresses for the STDs and realized that I have sent an invitation and at least one Christmas card to John and Jane JanesOldLastName.  Yikes.  I felt horrible when I realized this and thankfully corrected it before I sent out the STD.  Can you imagine showing up to a wedding to an escort card with your first name and your wife's ex-husband's last name?  Ugh.
