Pet Peeves...

Re: Pet Peeves...

  • Biggest peave of all time..... People who say axed instead of asked. And people who speak a different language in front of you just because they know you can't understand. I also can't stand people who refuse to take responsibility for their lives. Being a single parent is not an excuse for unruly, aweful, rude, rotten children. And if you left him, you CHOSE your path. having been a single parent (of 3 and medically unable to work at the time) I have been there so I know the path well. You will only be as successful as you allow yourself to be. I'm a firm believer that you Can do anything you set your mind to if you are willing to give it a shot. If you settle on minimum wage and refuse to try for more, don't be mad when more doesnt come your way.
  • One of my BM's is a stay at home mom whose husband recently got a promotion that requires him to travel a lot. When he's gone, she posts things on Facebook referring to herself as being a "single parent." Ummm... No. Single moms leave their children with family members, or strangers all day while they go out and work full time to make ends meet on their own. They certainly aren't home all day with their children. I know being a stay at home mom is ridiculous hard, but every time that she does that, I - a person who actually was raised by a single parent - just want to smack her and ask her if she even realizes how insensitive she's being to the women out there who really are doing it on their own. I love her, but man.... No. Just no. And I don't even know if there's anything I can or should say about it. I just find it very offensive, so so far, I'm sticking with the rule they teach you in kindergarten: if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Post about it on the Internet like a good friend!

"Oh, I hold the knife and fork the wrong way. You are supposed to hold the fork in your right and knife in your left. It never made sense to me, b/c the fork hand is staying still and the knife hand is doing the cutting, so why not hold the knife with the more dexterous hand? You wouldn't saw with your left hand (unless you're left handed) so why would you cut with it? My grandmother scolded me all the time about it (it was a sign the devil was in me) but I just can't cut the "right" way."

Exactly the opposite is correct : fork in left, knife in right.

"why not hold the knife with the more dexterous hand?"
Love the word-play here :) Dexter means exactly "right" in Latin.
As for your grandmother, are you sure she wasnt talking about using your left hand ? Left hand was considered evil for a very long time . Actually "sisnister" means evil AND "left"

And while the fork and knife are only a matter of etiquette, scissors actually are made right handed. If you hold them with the right hand, the blades come close to each other and cut.  With the left hand the pressure isin  the opposite direction and there mitght be a gap. So left handed children can not cut stuff for school projects as good as right handed children  :)  Discrimination!

    @StageManager14

Which part of "word-play" you don't understand?
Liatris2010 made it sound interesting, may be on purpous , maybe not. I  like the way she sid it- it's smart and interesting.

As for the rest: Words from the same origin are often spelled  different in different languages. Not to mention that in some languages they have genders. :)
So here is some info in English for you.
    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sinister

    Definition of SINISTER

( skipping the first 2 meanings)

    3

: singularly evil or productive of evil

    4
a : of, relating to, or situated to the left or on the left side of something; especially : being or relating to the side of a heraldic shield at the left of the person bearing it
b : of ill omen by reason of being on the left

    Origin of SINISTER

Middle English sinistre, from Anglo-French senestre on the left, from Latin sinistr-, sinister on the left side, unlucky, inauspicious

I did not say that sinister meant evil im Latin, but can check on that , if it bothers you. Do synonyms count?

I kind of get the feeling that you don't like the fact that I am paying a compliment to Liatris2010 for smart choice of wording . Otherwise what is the reason to get into the details of how this or the other word is spelled in which language? Is there a problem?

People who chew with their mouth open is my biggest pet peeve.  It's like nails on a friggin chalkboard!!

I also can't stand when you hold the door open for someone and they don't say thank you.

Or people who go into a restaurant and when ordering say "gimme..."

"why you think I would be bothered by a compliment to her"

Because you effectuvely killed her joke. From all the words to describe a dominant hand she chose that one. And the reference to the other one being "from the devil" was a clear nod towards the "sinister/left"  word-play
. Time is not of importance here. I don't even know if there was a word for "devil" in Latin. ( Roman vs Judeo-Christian religions etc. )

I still appreciate her joke and don't see why we can't just enjoy it.
    I'll leave at that.

How did a thread started back in February end up at the top again? I mean, it's a good thread and all, but kinda completely random.

Another pet peeve of mine, when people leave drawers, cabinets, the copy machine, the microwave, etc. open and walk away like it's nothing. I work in an office where the printer/copier is in the kitchen common area. Sometimes I walk in there and one of everything will be left open, with nobody in there. Who does that? I get so frustrated I almost want to slam them shut when I see things like that. I just don't get it. Open something, close something. It's pretty simple. I feel like a crazy person sometimes because it bothers me to no end.

  • I've got another one. I'm peeved when people hear I'm getting married and state "I'm sorry why would you do that again". Just because my first ended up in disaster does not mean I gave up on love, does not mean I have to be single forever. And lately my coworkers peeve me to no end on all this. My fiancé sent me flowers for my promotion with a sweet card. I got asked why did I need to rub it in. I responded with "well I didn't send them to myself" and someone blurts out "quit pretending to be so happy" I zipped my mouth to prevent getting written up and walked away. It. I'm happy, its not my problem that you aren't!!! I actually ENJOY coming home to him at night.

Well, the flip side of languages and coughing....

I LOVE it when someone comes up to me and snarls, "Learn English or go back where you came from!" This happens more often than you think.  I love it because their reaction when I tell them what the languages are (American Indian) is PRICELESS.

Coughing.  I have COPD, and sound like I'm dying some days.  I can't make anyone else sick, but people say nasty things.  The rude ones say, "Oh, I'm sorry, but I'm glad it's not contagious."   If they're really nasty, I tell them I'm sorry it isn't.

HUGE pet peeve.  The American Lung Association has done such a good job with their anti-smoking campaign that much of the public now believes this is the ONLY way people can get lung cancer and COPD.  As a result, there are also nasty folks who think the patient got what was coming to them, and are eager to ensure you know it.  This isn't the only way to get those diseases (I'm not a smoker, either), and nobody deserves them.
My grandmother had COPD and I had a few people say "Well I guess you've learned never to smoke, huh?" I said "Well I've learned not to wait too long to go to the doctor if I suspect I have bronchitis. I guess she got what was coming to her for having a special needs child in the 50s and 60s and not being able to get to the doctor soon enough." She never smoked a day in her life.

My paw-paw died from lung cancer, partly because he smoked but also because he worked in the coal mines for a long time. I still don't feel as though he "got what was coming" to him. No one deserves to die like that, especially considering people back then didn't know smoking was so dangerous.

  • Ugh pet peeves of mine... rude and ungrateful patients, people saying that they are going to do something and then they turn around and don't do it... people who speak another language in front of you knowing that you do not understand (yes Jillian I am with you on this and I am bilingual Spanish)... Also the icing on the cake... vendors who flake out on you or who do not return calls...

Oh boy...I have a HUGE pet peeve!! For most, Im sure its ridiculous but it drives me CRAZY!!!!
Drive thru's...like McDonalds....not putting straws in the bag!!!! Wow...just typing that made my bp rise!!!! How the heck hard could it be!!!!! Someone orders a drink...give a freekin straw!!!!! Simple!!!!  Afterall, you order fries..they ask if you want ketchup!! McNuggets..."what kind of sauce?" Right!!!! Drink+straw...drink+straw!! EVERYONE needs a straw!! Not everyone needs ketchup!!!!!!! UGH!!!!! Its not brain surgery!!!! No rocket science here!!!!!!! :/

MAYBE I could understand if you order a meal that they MAY think the straw is in the bag BUT if we order just a drink!!!!!! Its not like the straw MAY BE in the drink!!!!!!!! or the car!!!!!!! I swear my FI secretly hopes there is no straw so he can hear me go "jersey" about it!!! (I never do take it out on the worker)

LMAO!! I just cracked myself up!!!!! I think I may need therapy!!!!

BTW....even if they think it MAY BE in the bag..they should still check!!!!!!!! Geez!!!!!!!
