Head Count Question..kinda

What are you ladies doing about items that require a guest count to purchase.  Things like....Favors, boxes for favors, programs, any individual event items (parasols, flip flops, fans).

Are you waiting until closer to the day or are you sucking it up and ordering a max number that you will need and getting things ready long before the day?  I am so curious as I sit and plan out favors and boxes, table decor and other little things.

Re: Head Count Question..kinda

  • I just bought max for my centerpiece items (20 tables worth). I really don't think we will need that many, but if so I have it. And I am planning on selling it after the wedding. And for some of the extra candle things I am going to use them on the bar, in the bathroom, etc. etc. to try to carry the look throughout the hall.

  • I purchased our post ceremony "throwables" (lavender in organza bags) and got 150. I don't know if that is too many or too little.

I am waiting until later to order favors. As for seating chart cards, I purchased enough for 1 per couple - at the max. Programs I will also probably order 150 and hand them out as one per couple if needed.

It's frustrating cause I want to order NOW but I know it's best to wait until we know the actual number.

  • I am like you Sew - I want to do it NNOOOOOWWWWW

I think I will order favor boxes on the high side - were doing fudge, so if there is extra it won't go to waste.  Centerpieces we did on the high side as well and our table numbers are flexible.  We can seat 8-10 to each table.  Whatever items we have left can go by the card box and elsewhere.

You did remind me though about place cards.  I don't know what were doing about that yet.  I thought I would make one big table chart and just list everyone's name at the table, but I could do something more individual too.  When I am in the planning mood, the possibilities are endless!

  • We are getting starte with them now as well. A lot of things are "resellable" so we are aiming mid to high. I went a little low on things like bubbles because not everyone joins in. Centerpieces we are setting for 20 and we can do 6-8 people per table. Skipping favors; and seating chart. Programs also probably shooting low around 50-75 for those.

  • We are not doing favors. Programs FI is designing but we probably will not print those till closer to the date. Centerpiece stuff I purchased when we were planning on having a bigger wedding so we have lots of extras which I am planning on selling.

  • I could have planned the entire event in a weekend if given the resources and every person I called answered and agreed immediately - ya know? I'm not good at waiting. I normally have things organized way in advance. Except when I procrastinate - they I procrastinate BIG TIME. There is no middle ground.

  • I figured everything out as if we'd get 100% show up. Most likely we will not, but everything I bought, can be resold. The only thing that cant is the candy, which I will just take it to work for the receiption desk for clients.

  • I'm sorta surprised at all the responses of things being sellable. Nothing of ours is sellable, or even anything I would try to re-sell.

  • We're not doing favors, and I plan on designing/printing our programs and escort cards, so those are waiting until we are closer.  I have thought about the reselling thing.  I am making the centerpieces (cutting wine bottles and putting tealight underneath) and we'll have so many that I may sell those later.  I'm not big into keeping things for nostalgia's sake- that's what photos are for.
  • @sew - ditto it all

I cannot think of anything I'd attempt at reselling.  MAYBE the centerpieces but it could be quite a hassle. And if I bought favor boxes for 125 people and ended up needing 107 then who would by 18 boxes?  Not that I worry about 18 boxes, but that's the principle, just that there will be a random number of things.

And you and I are very alike.  I always aim to finish projects ahead of time, and I am super punctual. But if I feel like procrastinating, then it's a real problem.  I tend to only procrastinate in one area of my life and it back fires every.single.time.

That's how I feel. Also, even if I had say, 17 centerpieces - what are the chances that someone else has the same taste as me in (non-floral) centerpieces and needs the same amount? At some point, it's easier for each new bride to buy their own supplies. For my shower, vases were purchased at the Dollar Store. I don't know how they would have been able to find cheaper, easier to find matching vases for centerpieces  that were less than $1.07 each (7% sales tax in NJ).

  • I want to get our centerpieces done NOW but I need to confirm with the caterer about how many tables we'll have. I should probably just suck it up and do them, and plan on having 9 big tables and 8 or 9 cocktail tables. I'm created two different centerpieces, one for the seated and one for the cocktail tables. It's just candles in vases, but I need to frost the vases... I have one set done.

I need to figure out how to strip spray paint off of glass, then I can get set #2 done. Any ideas?
  • What about something like Goo gone? Or turpentine?

  • I actually like the smell of turpentine. It reminds me of painting with oils. And, my grandfather was an artist, and it reminds me of his basement.
