Anniversary help...

What did you do for your boyfriend/husband on your anniversary? Did you get him a cool gift or go somewhere together? Just looking for some ideas! Thanks!

Re: Anniversary help...

  • We went to Dallas (about 3 hours away) and got a nice hotel room. Walked around all weekend and just had some fun.
  • FI and I usually do something - years where we haven't had money, we've gone on picnics. Years that have been better financially, we go to our favorite restaurant in the city or do touristy things in our area. We've done weekend trips too.
  • There's always something fun for me to buy for H's home office. He collects cameras and movie memorbilia, so it's pretty easy.
We also enjoy doing outings together, like wine tastings as well.
  • Our first wedding anniversary is this year, so I think we'll go out to Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

  • We usually just do a nice dinner out. Of course, we're not married yet, so that's just what we do for our dating anniversary. Sometimes our schedules are too busy to do a celebratory dinner on the actual anniversary, so we do it the closest weekend.  Once we're married, we'll probably never do it the weekend before if we can't do it the day of.  My birthday is only 5 days before the wedding, so I really don't want to try to lump 2 celebrations into one weekend if we have to celebrate both on a weekend.
    Anniversary
  • We do something a little different every year, but we tend to be more "activity" oriented than "gift" oriented for anniversaries
This is what we prefer too - we agreed early on that gifts were not for us because we are not very good at figuring out what someone would like to receive. We get a nice dinner out or make something extra fancy at home, maybe take a day trip or go hiking or something, and just spend time being together.

Our most recent anniversary was this past Saturday, and we were both exhausted from an all-nighter (me) and a day of working outside in 90+ degree weather (him). We ordered pizza, watched TV, and just snuggled and talked and read our books together. Bigger plans are fun too, but this was the best anniversary yet, in my opinion - we felt very content and close to each other and didn't need a whole lot to make it special.

We used to make each other cards as well, but BF stresses himself out trying to write something new and original every time, so it has become an unhealthy practice, lol. He has written me some amazing letters and poems on the cards, though. They are definitely going to be saved forever.
  • Nothing really.   The first anniversary he was sick.  The second he was OOT, the 3rd we were in the middle of a move.  Now we are like "oh it's anniversary".  Kind of sad, but we do not celebrate other dates like Valentine's Day or Thanksgiving because of DH's work.  We give each other gifts and do special things through out the year, so not doing something is not a big deal.

Now there is a possibility that my SIL is getting married next year on our anniversary (should find out this week).  So next year we might be celebrating with half our guest list at another wedding.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • For our first wedding anniversary last year, we took a trip to California. We did San Fran, Napa, Carmel/Monterey and Big Sur. It was an AWESOME trip. On the day of our actual anniversary, we biked over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito.

This year we don't have the funds for a big trip, so we are taking a small getaway to Chicago for a few days. We much prefer trips or experiences over physical gifts.

    Vacation
  • Last year was our first wedding anniversary and we went to Montreal for a few days.  This year we're going to Newport for two nights.  We love to travel and would much rather do that than physical gifts.
  • On our dating anniversaries so far we've done different things one year we just went to dinner locally.  Another year we stayed in a real nice hotel in NYC walked around and did a nice dinner. Sometimes we've gotten each other big gifts and other times we done smaller gifts it really depends on year.

    Anniversary

  • We just celebrated our 1st in March. We went out for a nice dinner.

  • For my one year with FI I got his broken trombone fixed, and then he treated us to chicken wings.  It was a good day :)

I love all of your ideas ladies! We have our 1 year dating anniversary exactly one month before we will be getting married. So I was kind of looking for ideas for both types of anniversaries! My FI loves hunting and fishing.. and it is hard to buy him stuff because a lot of those things can be complicated. It's hard to tell what he already has or what he would want or need without directly asking him. So I try to surprise him with dinners or little random things sometimes. We do love little getaways together, and nice meals! Also he loves Smashburger so I think he would be just as happy with that!

Also, did anyone get their husband a gift for the day of their wedding? Or did you write a nice letter? I was definitely going to write him a special letter, but I know some other friends who got their husband a gift. Just curious to see what you ladies might have done!

  • If FI and I were local to each other, we'd do date night and something fun.  If we were long distance, we'd do gifts.  This year it will be low key because it's the week before our wedding.

Last year I got him a nice watch.
