Gift Etiquette

A relative of mine recently got married. Our side of the family wasn't invited to either the ceremony or the reception, nor did we receive engagement or wedding announcements. However, one of my aunts hosted a day-after potluck dinner so our side of the family could meet her new husband. Afterward, we all received a message from her mother stating that we should have brought gifts for the couple from her registry. Do I need to go get her a gift?

Re: Gift Etiquette

  • Ummm no you do not need to get her a gift! It was incredibly rude of the mother. You guys were nice enough to host a little get together for her!

  • Holy entitlement.  That's just brutal.  No, you don't have to give them a gift and it was beyond rude for her to tell you otherwise.

  • I don't know why this stuff continues to shock me but I'm shocked.  People are so greedy its unbelievable.

WTH?!?! Unbelievable. No, you absolutely do not have to give a gift and since I can be spiteful, I most certainly would not at this point even if I was thinking about it. Wow.

  • Wow.  Her mother is a grade A idiot.
  • Wow. I would be mortified if my Mom did that.

  • OMG I really hope the mom acted on her own accord and was not put up to that by the bride.  A gift is never, ever required and it was super rude of her to tell you that you should have brought one.
  • That is so rude and no you don't HAVE to get them a gift. if you wanted to, it would be fine but if you weren't planning to before her mother said something that I would just skip it.

  • Receiving an email like that would probably be motivation for me to NOT give a gift, if I'd been inclined to before. Nothing stinks as bad as entitlement. However, it might not have been bride/groom's fault.... if there was a discreet way to do it, I might make sure they were aware of the email.
  • Wow.  That's just beyond rude.  A gift isn't required and shouldn't be expected even if you had attended the wedding, and certainly not since you weren't even invited but went out of your way to do something nice for her.

    Just ignore the MOB :)

  • WOW that's shocking. My mom was upset that people aren't RSVPing and I thought she was being rude calling people every day. Yeah don't think she's rude anymore. And I think gifts for a wedding are resonable but if you aren't invited why send a gift.
