July 2013 Weddings

Do you have your wedding dress yet?

I sure don't! Mine is "allegedly" scheduled to arrive in late June or the first week of July - I am getting married July 12!

It's a now-discontinued Maggie Sottero dress and after I ordered it as a rush order, I got a phone call saying the designer doesn't take rush orders.

Done and over but I'm beginnign to panic a bit about having any time for alterations. I got engaged on NYE and ordered the dress I think the first week of February. How was that not enough time - sheesh!

Just curious if you all have your dresses and how long you think you'll need for alterations?

  • Oh yikes! Stressful!

Yes, I have mine. I bought it 'off the rack' in March. It's currently at the Alterations having some work done, and should be ready in the next couple of weeks.
  • I've also had my Maggie dress since May last year. Its an older style, Victoriana, and I only needed the hem altered. I don't know how you're surviving lol, Id be super panicky in your situation"

Mine just came in!  If the dress shop is not worried, I wouldn't stress too much, they do handle dresses all the time (although much easier said than done to not stress about it).  One June rolls around I would stay on top of them and call frequently to check the stautus
  • I've been told that places usually work on a 6 week timeline for alterations, but with your situation I'm sure they'll move you to the top of their list!

I have my dress, but won't be taking it in for alterations until June.

I'm out of country up until late June, so my dress is at my sisters house, so I technically 'have it' but I can't have it altered until then.
  • I don't have mine...or even know what it's going to be.  My aunt is making it, and we haven't even STARTED.  We at least know what she's basing her design off of, and we're making plans to purchase the materials.  I know it'll turn out great, but I'm not gonna lie, I'm WICKED nervous about this!  People ask me all the time about my dress, and I'm just like "I dunno".  It's frustrating because I hate doing things last minute and it's been harder to plan some other wedding stuff (like my bouquet, for example), but it'll be fine.  In the end, it'll all be worth it!
  • Got mine in January. Just took it to the tailor on Monday, going back for my second fitting on June 18th--They certainly could have had it done sooner but I told him I was trying to lose a bit more weight so he only pinned everything and is going to wait to do anything until then. I'm having it taken in, changed to a sweetheart neckline, hemmed, bustled, and sewing in a beaded sash.

  • Ive had mine since last May. I am sure that is stressful...

  • Mine came in the end of January.  I hope your dress comes in soon!  I would be starting to have a little panic attack as well.  But remember, the store does this all day long.  They will take care of you :)
  • Mine was supposed to come in June, but I got a call at the end of April that it was in. I went and tried it on, and will have my first actual fitting in about 2 weeks. I was kind of stressed when I thought it was coming in June, too, but I'm sure your salon or tailor will do what is needed for you to have it in time.

UGH! It's just me then, huh? Well, hopefully it comes in with enough time for at least one round of alterations. They did say I could do a rush alteration if needed (but worded it like "I" can pay for one/seek one out) - at this point I don't really care - just want the dress!

The worst part is just I can't style it in any way until it gets here. So I'm guessing I'll be running around like crazy trying to buy a veil, shoes, the bra thing, jewelry, etc.!

Oh, and it's the Maggie Sottero "Calista" dress in Alabaster (champagne). From what I remember, I really loved it LOL.

  • I've got mine, I probably should drop it off to be altered ;)
  • Yup and it's been with the seamstress for two weeks now. I can't wait to try it on again.

Ditto this except I bought mine off the rack in January - getting worked on as we speak!

  • Oh jeepers, I totally get what you're going through! I went to get my first fitting done two weeks ago, put on the dress, and discovered that they had accidentally ordered the shortened length. The seamstress pinned it a bunch of ways to see what she could do to fix it, but in the end, pins dont add fabric to a skirt, so there was nothing she could do, so they ordered me a new dress. They said they would rush order it, and everything should be fine. Ok. Great. Flash forward to yesterday, when I get a phone call that the dress we just ordered me wont be in until the week of the wedding, so if it needs alterations (which I don't think it will) they're only going to have that week to make them. Good times ^_^ My back up plan right now is to wear my FSIL's dress (she's also a BM). She got married 2 years ago, and immediately had the dress preserved. She's bringing it just in case. I'm just glad she and I wear the same size!
  • I got my off the rack on Black Friday for a song! Still need to get started on alterations tho.

    IT'S HERE IT'S HERE!

Well, Monday it will be. I called my bridal shop today and they put me on hold only to come back and say, "I have great news - your dress is in!"

I have been so stressed/bummed about not being able to see my dress again, get fitted, and buy the accessories. My wedding is July 12 and this is cutting it super close! BUT the upside is that the last time I called, they said it wouldn't be here until July, causing me the single, only meltdown I have had in this whole planning processes.

I am so excited I could scream!

I am also thinking: when I first tried on dresses/bought my dress, it was an exciting experience but not as emotional as I anticipated. Now, after enduring six months of stress, planning, and a few unexpected drama-type challenges together, trying on the dress for the second time is going to be a much more meaningful, emotional, affirming experience.

Did any of you feel differently trying on your dress for the second time?

  • Oh My Goodness!!! I'd be a nervous wreck! I got my dress back in February and was lucky enough to get the one off the rack. Alterations can take a little bit depending on what you need done, but I am sure they will put you on the top of the list. BTW, Maggie is one of my fav designers and I wish I could have got one of her dresses! She's amazing and I am sure you will absolutely love your dress.

I can barely remember what it looks like but I did love it! Thankfully I didn't try to fool myself and buy a smaller size - it *should* be pretty close to fitting and will hopefully just need one round of alterations. I will probably have to do a rush I suppose - which is fine as long as I have the dress!

Thanks for the kind words! I can't wait to see it. It has felt this whole time like one of the biggest pieces was just entirely missing and I was missing out on all the *stuff* that had to do with me - the dress, the accessories, the shoes, the veil, etc. I can't wait!

  • Yep, I had mine for about 3 months now...it's altered, just waiting for the bridal salon to clean it and steam it. I pick it up July 5th...my wedding is the 27th.

I don't have my dress either! It just got in yesterday, and they're"inspecting" it.

I wanted it with the corset back, but they couldn't make one in time,so they had to order it with a zipper, and they said their alterations department could turn it into a corset back in, like, two days, so not to worry. I asked, if it was ok, if I could come in and see it before they do that, because what if I just like it better as a zipper back, rather than corset? Then they don't have to do anything to it :)

So I'm trying it on for the first time on Monday :) Yay!

I would be stressed in your situation too, but have you done anything to give yourself a head start on the veil, shoes, etc? I know I was ridiculously picky about my veil, and couldn't find anything I liked,so my grandma just made one, haha! (She made my mom's too:) and I found my shoes for $12.50 on clearance at DSW. I just saw them, and absolutely loved them.

@1FairMaiden your dress ended up being perfect! I hope to have the same luck this Thursday... :\

I have not even begun to look for a veil, shoes, etc. I have a bracelet that I bought the day I bought the dress but still need *everything* else. I guess I felt like I barely remembered the dress, having not seen it since February, so how could I really match anything to it? I definitely will be doing some last minute scrambling to get the accessories, but it just is what it is at this point!

Grrr! I went in for my fitting, and they were like "whoops! Just kidding! Your dress still isn't in!" I tried to be nice about it, but seriously, I'm at 25 days!

Ahh for some reason I thought it was you posting the fitting pic in the other thread. Well you and I are in the same boat then! I am at 24 days :\ I am just praying I don't need a lot altered...this seems like it's cutting it really close. Did they tell you when you bought your dress it would take you up to the wire to get? I feel like my place really downplayed that. I'd be really stressed and probably kind of mad if it STILL wasn't in after they told me it was.
  • They told me the dress should be in by Monday, but tomorrow at the latest.

I started as happy as a clam with my dress boutiques' customer service, but now I kind of feel like they are giving me the run around. If the dress isn't in by this Saturday (they told me it would be tomorrow -Thursday - at the latest) I'm going to ask if they'll give me my money back, and just go to DB and get something off the wrack.

I've called them several times. Most of the time, it takes a couple of tries to even get someone on the phone during business hours, because I get sent to voice mail a lot. I used to leavemessages, until I figured out that they don't actually listen to their voice mails. When I finally get in touch with someone, they "promise" me a manager is going to call me back "Soon," I don't hear anything for a few days, I call them back, the manager isn't there, but they ask for my number so the manager can call me. Sure... but then she still doesn't. Then I call again "Oh, we haven't heard anything from merchandising." " Ok. Well... is there a number I can call to talk to merchandising myself?" "Umm... no, merchandising is really an automated system. there are no people for you to talk to." Seriously... you're telling me my wedding gown is currently being assembled by drones?

And this whole series of events has happened a few times now.

Today, they asked me if my name has been misspelled in the system, "because they just can't seem to find me in the computer," when it turns out that the sales girl has been spelling my name wrong every time she's been typing it. Even though I spelled it for her. Four times.

I don't like getting b!tchy with anyone. Ever... I promise I don't. But it took everything in me not to yell at this woman "I'm pretty sure that I, an educator with a master's degree, has figured out how to spell my first and last name at some point during my life. I think the problem here isn't that I don't know how to spell, but rather the fact that you, my dear, are rampantly illiterate."

I didn't. I'm trying to keep blowing sunshine at this sales staff so I have a leg to stand on if I have to ask for my money back. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar... or sledge hammers.

UGH that is terrible and I'm sorry - the dress is a HUGE thing and it has to go right :\ Well I hope it works out and I agree - you're better off trying the sunshine approach in case you do have to fight for your money back - which I would totally consider if they can't get their act together!
  • My mother finally decided to call, and so the sales girl, an assistant manager said "I'm going to send some very nasty emails to the district manager about this."

I'm sorry... I don't believe you. Not for one minute do I believe that an assistant manager of a dress store is going to get persnickety with her manager over something that it sounds like happens all the time. But on Friday, she called and said the dress would be shipped on Saturday morning, and that they would have a tracking number on Monday, so they would know exactly when it would be in their store.

the really sad thing is I don't even honestly love this dress. I just thought it looked good on me, and I was in a rush to pick it out. It's very flattering - I know the pictures are going to come out nicely in it, but it's not my favorite thing I've ever seen. I didn't have the moment of "love"... I had the moment of "I guess this will do..."  ::sigh:: oh well. I'll just have to depend on the groom to make the day feel magical ;) But I really wish I had taken the time to pick out something I really loved instead of feeling rushed and pressured into picking both of the dresses that I've now had.
  • My dress just came in this week. My fitting is Saturday at 5pm, hopefully I don't need to much done. I had to order it 2 sizes too big due to my breast.
