Re: Areas of Study

  • 1. Undergrad or Grad?
I am a grad!  I'm planning to stop after my masters which I guess is now done . . .
    2. Major?
For my undergrad it was Combined Honours in English and Medieval Studies.  I had originally planned to do History and English, but decided to go a bit more specific.
    3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? (We all love learning so feel free to expand)
I LOVED my thesis topic.  It was on cross-dressing knights in medieval literature, which is actual a recurring aspect of some medieval texts.  I decided to look specifically at male and female knights who cross-dressed, which narrowed it down.  French and German literature, especially Old French, really loved the cross-dressing plot.  My research brought up a lot of gender issues and I got to study clothing closely as well.
I chose my topic because I like to study medieval clothing (I'm the one at medieval faires bemoaning how the lacing of people's gowns are historically inaccurate) and my best research tends to be on gender issues, so I combined the two.
    4. Favorite thing about University?
I think the schedule is my favourite.  Once you work 9-5 everyday, sleeping in when you have a late class is no longer a thing.
    5. Worst thing?
I'm a work-a-holic, so I would make the most demanding schedule of myself, suffer through it, and then end up with more credits than I needed.
    6. Anything you wish you did differently?
For my undergrad, I wish I had not taking the "Art of Walking" class.  It was about romantic literature that talked about people . . . walking.  Why, why did I take that class?
    7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?
Yep!  I work for a publishing company.

    ETA - double post.
  • 1. Undergrad or Grad?

Graduate - just finished the first year of my PhD program.

    2. Major?

    Exercise Physiology

    3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? (We all love learning so feel free to expand)

Currently working on a few different projects but I believe it will be relating to mitophagy.

    4. Favorite thing about University?

    Teaching

    5. Worst thing?

The absurdly long hours in a research lab that consists of a ton of machines, toxic chemicals, and cinderblock walls with no windows for more then 12 hours at a time.

    6. Anything you wish you did differently?

Realize my field needed a PhD when I was a first year undergraduate, done pharmacy and walked out with a 6 figure income.

    7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?

After 10 years of school I better. I want to focus on teaching at the university level. I will most likely have to do a post-doctoral fellowship (yayyyy more school), but hopefully I can get into an R1 institution. FI is not in a mobile field so we have to stay in the Greater Philadelphia area.
  • 1. Undergrad or Grad?
        Grad
    2. Major?
My undergrad was BFA in Studio Art with a Teacher Certification.  My masters will be a MA in Art History with a concentration in Museum Studies.
    3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? (We all love learning so feel free to expand)
Will be starting my thesis in the fall.  It will be on museums and technology, specifically on the aspect of online learning (i.e. museums offering online courses vs. taking a course & physically being in the museum),
    4. Favorite thing about University?
Meeting people from different backgrounds and getting to work with people who have been in the field for years to learn "real world" practices.
    5. Worst thing?
The hours/schedule - the program I'm in is soooo weird, there are very little evening classes and most are in the day/afternoon which makes having (or trying to get) a full-time job while going to grad school.
    6. Anything you wish you did differently?
Nope.  Well, maybe not procrastinate so much lol.  But I'm glad I took 2 classes my first semester, as it made me realize I couldn't handle that much work/stress while also working 4 part time jobs plus babysitting.
    7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?
Yes! While I'm still looking & hoping for a full-time art teacher position, I have been working in museums for the past 2 years - right now its just part-time/freelance positions but I've already moved up in one position so hopefully the others will too.

  • @ArtTeacher23 I have a few friends that worked in a museum, and they loved it!  They were coming into it from the archaeology side of things, though, so probably different museums than what you are interested in.  Do you have a particular period in Art History that you are interested in?

  • @elBecko What kind of environmental factors linked to suicide?  Would something like getting seasonal depression be included?  I was having this discussion with someone recently about people in Norway and how depressing it must be to have the three months of darkness.

    7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?

I'm going to have to flip flop between the two schools a bit since I'm still in limbo

1.) I'm starting graduate school in August after a year off (this is the limbo)

2.) I'll be getting my masters in music therapy.  My undergrad was in vocal performance.

3.) Yes, I plan to do a thesis.  I have no idea what my topic will be yet because I haven't started grad school yet.  I'll have a better idea once I start.  The only thing that's come to mind though is researching how music affects memory function.

4.) My favorite thing about where I got my bachelors was that it was a small school.  First name basis with the teachers, everyone in the department knew each other.  I got lots of individualized education, which was great.  The other best thing-that's where I met my FI!

5.) The intimate department was a double-edge sword.  SO. MUCH. DRAMA. It was horrible, and somehow, I was placed in the thick of it during my last year.  People put me in a really bad position, and it was awful.  Very high school-y.

6.) I would have gotten a much better education if I went to a different school.  But I can't regret that because I never would have met my FI.  I was planning on having a psych minor, but decided not to because I listened to the horrible advice of a professor when I first started there.  I shouldn't have listened to her, and went for it anyway.  It would have been really helpful for grad school.

7.) If I were to stop my education now, there's no way I could get a job.  But once I get my master's, I'll be very employable, as long as I'm willing to travel to the job.

  • 1. Undergrad or Grad?
    I'm a graduate student

    2. Major?
    Communication

    3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? (We all love learning so feel free to expand)
My thesis is focusing on how the medical community communicates about the choice to use a midwife. It will probably end up being a mix of critical theory and rhetorical theory. I'm in the very beginning stages of my research right now.

    4. Favorite thing about University?
I love taking classes. I actually had a chat with my adviser where he told me I had to stop taking classes and focus on my thesis. I'm going to graduate with more credits than anyone else who has been in the program.

    5. Worst thing?
I really hate the department drama. It's a small school and a really small program. People act like high schoolers and it gets old really fast.

    6. Anything you wish you did differently?
I actually wish I had picked a different program entirely. I'm exited to finish my masters and continue for my PhD somewhere else.

    7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?
My passion right now lies with teaching. I love it. In the future I'd also like to do some consulting. My focus is health communication and I'd love to do what one of my professors does, which is helps various groups create campaigns for various medical issues (such as getting people vaccinated)

  • I thought it would be fun to hear about what people study/research in while going to school.  Another Poll!

    1. Undergrad or Grad? Grad

    2. Major? Rehabilitation Counseling and Administration

    3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? (We all love learning so feel free to expand) I am currently doing research for my dissertation on the relationship between cultural climate and job satisfaction on the retention rates of faculty of color in rehabilitation education. I chose this topic because multicultural counseling and diversity in rehabilitation counseling is a big interest of mine and minorities, especially women from racial/ethnic minorities, have been shown to  underrepresented in academia. While studies have looked at the link of cultural climate and retention of minorities in academia this has not been done in my field and little has been done on job satisfication and how it relates to retention of these faculty members.
    4. Favorite thing about University? I really love teaching and I have been able to teach quite a few courses and last semester my professor, colleague and I developed a course on social justice and diversity which was amazing!

    5. Worst thing? Rural area, nothing to do, boring, really don't like this town at all.And within my department there is not a lot of support which is very problematic

    6. Anything you wish you did differently? Sometimes I think I should have went to medical school

    7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study? Yes I do, I want to open my own counseling center for children with disabilities and their families.
  • 1. Undergrad or Grad? Undergrad
    2. Major? Computer Science
    3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? (We all love learning so feel free to expand)
    No thesis for me :)
    4. Favorite thing about University? It is really small. You get to know the professors and other students really well.
    5. Worst thing? The management and staff (not professors) are very unprofessional and not helpful
    6. Anything you wish you did differently? Not really. My college years turned out better than I could have imagined. Met my fiance there and discovered my talents for programming.
    7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study? I have been working as a software developer for a network engineering team for a year and a half.

  • @kerbohl - I love working in museums, it's so much fun! I'm really into modern art (Impressionism, Dada, Cubism, Pop, Abstract Expressionism, and all of those other 'ism"s lol, basically whatever is in MoMA in NY).   Although I come from an art background lately I've been working in a few smaller house museums with a strong historical focus, but it's been nice to find ways to integrate my artsy side with the historical stories of the families who lived there.

  • Everyone is doing such interesting stuff!

@Kerbohl Your topic sounds so interesting!  You are totally right that knights would cross dress, I had never really thought about that until now.  Neat!

@Wiffeykitty14 -Music and memory is very interesting!  Soprano, Mezzo, or Alto? I'm a Mezzo.  :)

@Bethsmiles You never told me your topic before!  Wow, it sounds really cool.  My cousin is a Dula so I know a tiny bit about midwifing.

@Dammitkrystyn Yay! Another English major and French!  J'aime francias mais je ne parle pas francias bien.  J'etudie allemand maintenant.  What is your interest in English?  Period?

  • @ravenray - That's awesome that your cousin is a Dula! There is so much stigma, judgement, and general misinformed opinions about mid-wives. My hope for my research is to understand the way we talk about that option that makes it so stigmatized so I can hopefully do more research directed toward how we can use communication to resolve that problem.

  • @bethsmiles I've always heard really good things about midwives.  Where is all this judgement coming from?  My sister had a midwife, and many of my cousins did, and they thought it was wonderful.  The only crappy thing about my sister's midwife is that my sister's water broke three weeks early when she was out of town, so she didn't get to have her midwife at her birth - really not the fault of the midwife at all!

  • @kerbohl - I'm looking more at the stigma placed on women who choose to use a mid-wife over the typical hospital births than specifically stigma placed on the mid-wives themselves There's a lot of people who have no idea the qualifications mid-wives have, what the process of using a mid-wife is like, or any of the options that come with using a mid-wife - so judgements are made. Using a mid-wife used to be really common but then the profession of being an OBGYN was created and there was a HUGE smear campaign against mid-wives so that people would go to the hospital and use an OBGYN instead. The effects of that smear campaign are still found in our society today. Have you ever seen how women who choose to use mid-wife are portrayed on television shows? It's not usually positive. I'm not saying there is outright hate it's subtle judgements and a lot of misconceptions. It's a really complicated issue and like I said, I'm just in the beginning stages of my research about it.

It sounds like it's really common to use a mid-wife in your circle, that's unusual. Do you mind me asking where you are from?

  • @bethsmiles I'm from Ontario, and just outside of Toronto.  I know a midwife that goes to my church, and she is in high demand as well.  I've always heard of it being a positive thing, because the midwives have a more intimate knowledge and therefore are more helpful.  They are also great for the pre-natal checkups.  One of my cousins gave birth in her own home with a midwife as well.

I've never seen these shows that portray midwives negatively.  Do you have some specific show examples, because now I'm curious.

  • Well, now that I know you are from Canada I'm guessing that is a major contributing factor to you not getting the judgement lol. I'm looking specifically at attitudes in the U.S. I'm not sure how many U.S. shows you would get in Canada...I can think of an episode of King of the Hill where they were at a what was supposed to be a mid-wife center (called it a birthing center) and it was just portrayed as this crazy guy in a robe doing chants and yoga. It was ridiculous.

And yes mid-wives have a lot of knowledge about pregnancy and birth that has really been lost in the medical field. Just to clarify, my position is that mid-wives are extremely good at what they do and an excellent choice. I fully plan on using a mid-wife when I decide to have kids.

  • I think I want to use a midwife too.  I have a really bad fear of doctors and my womb for some random reason.  Plus I loved the book "the Midwifes apprentice."

  • I have seen King of the Hill, but I missed the midwives episode.  That sounds a bit out there . . . It is really interesting how the stereotypes and misconceptions change from area to area, though.  I don't know if many Canadians have a good view of midwives or if it is an Ontario thing.  It would be interesting to find out!

    3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? (We all love learning so feel free to expand)
Oh my goodness I start researching next semester. I am such an indecisive person and I do not know where to start with my topic or even to narrow down topics.
    4. Favorite thing about University?
I am currently working at a preschool that is on campus and I love it. It also allows me more time on campus which I never truly appreciated during my undergrad.
    5. Worst thing?
Observation Hours. Everyone in the masters program pretty much works full time, and while I understand it is a mode of learning it is hard to find to do these hours while working in the actual field of ed.
    6. Anything you wish you did differently?
In undergrad - As a commuter I would go to class and come home - I wish I spent more time on campus
I love the program I am in but I also wish to try out other fields in education - but that means more $$$.
    7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?
Sort of. I am working at a preK/K classroom and subbing. No real full time position yet :/

  • @devinsberries Your thesis sounds really interesting!  By ostracized, do you mean those who have been in the church and something drove them away, or do you mean groups that unfortunately feel like they are not welcomed in the church in the first place?  Either would be interesting.  In the churches in my area, we've seen a big change with this "new generation" of pastors that is basically alienating older members and disrupting the sense of community in the church, causing members to leave in droves.  Would that be part of your thesis?
