Frustrated. . . just a rant, no question

Me and DH are currently apartment searching.  It's going very, very slowly.  We are having a hard time finding something in a safe neighborhood in our price range.  To make matters worse, we live in a place that does a lot of seasonal rentals.  Houses that would rent for $1500 a month during the winter are suddenly $10,000 a month between Memorial Day and Labor Day.  I'm just frustrated with the process today!

Re: Frustrated. . . just a rant, no question

  • That sucks, I hate moving. I recommend using an agency. There are quite a few that are free for renters. Here in Chicago I had no luck at all until I went to Apartment Finders and they were super helpful.

  • I'm sorry, that sounds really frustrating :(.  I agree with finding an agency to help.  Good luck!

  • Holy crap, $10,000/month??? That's insane! Good luck with your search!

We also looked around for a new apartment a few months ago with our lease ending this month, but we also couldn't find anything reasonable in a safe area that was even somewhat close to where we work. We currently live in one of the highest-crime areas of St Louis - downtown. But at least there are a lot of police officers around, I have a taser and we both have secure parking. It just wasn't worth it to move away from two secure parking spots!
  • Apartment searching is the worst! I want to have a baby soon and the 2 bedroom apartments are all way out of our price range!

If a 2 bedroom apartment is way out of your price range having a baby probably is too.  They cost a lot more than an apartment.

Thanks Linger. I had no idea! My plan is to get the apartment before even trying. I'd rather have my ducks in a row before I even get to that point. I'm thinking in another two years we'll start trying, but I like to plan ahead. Our place is tiny for just the two of us anyways and want to upgrade now rather than later.

ETA- When I say out of our price range, I mean more than I have budgeted for rent.

Ugh.  I can totally relate to the seasonal part.  Try talking to a realtor.  When I rented my last house, a realtor helped me to find it.  Sometimes they have rental listings as well as homes for sale!

    Good luck!

It depends on the area.  A summer rental on the Jersey Shore will cost you every dollar of $10,000 per month.  A typical house 2-3 bedrooms will run you 1,500-2,500 per week depends on the town and how close to the beach it is.  Not saying OP isn't exaggerating (she may be) but that price is not as uncommon as you may think.

Wouldnt' the $10k a month be for a HOUSE though?

I clean/manage houses in a very high tourist area.  I have houses that can easily go for ten grand a month.  Mind you, they are NOT typical 3 bedroom homes.  These homes are 3,500+ square foot homes that sleep 12-16 people.  So not really apples to apples.

    Heres a few for ya...

Right. that's what I figured.  We are talking luxury homes for that price. Not a 2 bedroom apartment.

  • Sorry, but neither of the subsequent posts proves to me that an APARTMENT that would be within OP's normal budget and that is rented out as a primary living space suddenly jumps to $10k a month between May 27 and September 2.

I am well aware that there are vacation type properties that rent by the week that would equal that much.  Heck, our favorite suite at the B&B where we honeymooned would be close to $10k a month if you rented it for that long.  That doesn't make it indicative of average apartment rentals in Branson, MO.
You're right.  But OP started her post talking about apartments then said...

"Houses that would rent for $1500 a month during the winter are suddenly $10,000 a month between Memorial Day and Labor Day."

you are right.  I guess I still don't see how that is relevant to an apartment search, but you are right, she did say that.

This.  My point got muddled in that I meant that I did not think that SHE was coming across these properties in HER search for a place (as legitimate options for them).
I'm picking up what you're laying down.

I really don't think she was either.  I guess my point was, they are definitely out there, but they are indeed luxury homes -- not your typical single family home.

Oh and this?  Kids come with a lot of unplanned expenses.  You won't be able to reasonably budget for every possibility.  My previous point still stands.

Then it's a good thing my husband is using his inheritance as a nice little nest egg for a potential future baby.

Apartment and house I use interchangeably. . . . Where I live, most rentals are houses or apartments within houses.  There are very few apartment buildings around here.

There is a cute 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom cottage located near where we are now for $22,000 for the summer.  That would ordinarily be around $1500-1800 if I was looking in the winter.

I'm not inclined to include a direct link to a posting because I don't want the whole internet world knowing exactly where I live.  That makes me nervous.  How would you remove the street address from a posting?

You can do a screenshot, then paste the screenshot in a paint type program and block out any address etc that way. Then post it as a picture.
