New solitaire

So, as I mentioned in OLW, I'm seriously considering getting a new solitaire as an 'every day' ring. Here are some of the styles I'm thinking of. My only 'must-have' is that it looks good with my wedding band. Mostly I like the idea of something that is bezel set and platinum or white gold.

What do you guys think? Any favorites? Any cool rings/designers that I should look at?

  • PS This is kind of going to be a post-and-run but I'll be back later. Please post more ring porn for me to look at when I come back! :)

  • I need pic of wedding band for further research!
  • I really like the first one! It has a cool, modern design but is still reminiscent of the classic solitaire look!

The fourth on is my second favorite. I'm not sure why I just think it looks pretty :)

  • I love the fourth one! I really like the skinnier bands rather than thick ones with solitaire diamonds. What does your band look like?
  • I really like 3 & 4!

  • @cu97tiger : I love #4!  I've been toying with the idea of a smaller ring, in rose gold.

  • Wedding band!

  • Seeing the wedding band makes #4 my favorite!

@CocoBellaF - I love rose gold rings! I'd love it if the e-ring BF picked is rose gold but I doubt it.

  • I think 2 or 4. Your band is so delicate that I wouldn't want to put too chunky of a solitaire with it.
  • I like the softer, more delicate look of #4 with your band.

I like bezel set rings, but if I were to get a solitaire I'd go for a trellis setting - it still has a lower profile, but I think it is prettier, personally. I love this one from brilliant earth. http://www.brilliantearth.com/Petite-Tapered-Trellis-Ring-Platinum-BE142-472/?show_setting_tab=true

@cschiano - that is a beautiful ring! I agree that that type of setting is prettier

  • #4 is my favorite of the options you posted Tiger. Your wedding band is so beautiful!

I also agree with Cschiano though. I have a trellis setting and it doesn't snag or get caught on anything! Also, I once had a jeweler tell me that they really disliked when people put diamonds into bezel settings. I thought it was a rude comment, but apparently a diamond shines brighter when the light is able to reflect off of the bottom cuts. That's why an open setting allows for a sparklier rock! Just something to think about.

  • I like the one Cschiano posted! Or number 2 on your OP.

A jeweler told me that once, too... and by nature of the bezel setting, it 'covers up' some of the diamond. I guess if I'm going to get a different setting, I should get something very different than what I have now (which is a bezel setting and a round diamond). I do like odd-shaped diamonds (ovals, marquis set horizontally, etc). I am looking forward to going to try some on, though I think it will be a year or two before we actually get it.

Keep the ideas coming! Any 'off-the-beaten-path' designers you like?

I like #4, and prefer the thinner shanks.  I also like something really clean and classic like this:

It is a bezel setting but allows light to get into the bottom of the stone.

  • imageHere is a pretty setting that is more open on the bottom. No idea who makes it, but it's a suggestion

imageHere is a simple sideways oval. imageI love this one with the side stones. It almost looks antique and I think it would be beautiful with your wedding band too!

  • These two caught my eye:

I can't tell how low that second one necessarily is, but I liked the overall shape.
  • allusive007 - I really like the last one you posted... and the one peaking out from the bottom of the picture looks intriguing, too.

LivLeighton - At this point, I'm going to leave my e-ring intact. It was my grandma's diamond, and if I took it out, I think I'd put it back in the setting that it was originally in. Hmmm, maybe I could get a new diamond put in her old setting and have it dipped in white gold? (It's currently yellow gold). I'd need to get it re-sized, too, but that is a definite option.

Also, the person who made my rings is in Arizona, so going back to him would be tough.

@KeptInStitches - I like the first one but I don't think it would go well with my wedding band.

  • @cu97tiger - I love the idea of using your grandmother's setting with a new diamond! I have no idea what it looks like, but I think for sentimental reasons alone it would be worth getting it dipped. That way no matter which ring you wear, you'll have a piece of hers with you. Plus, maybe your H would have an easier time with your decision knowing you'll be wearing a family heirloom?

It's definitely worth considering. I'm amazed how great my yellow gold birthstone ring looks after getting it rhodium plated. You'd never know it used to be yellow.
  • Love # 2 and #4!   I really like the bottom pic that allusive posted.   Any of those should go well with your band.   I heart ring porn:)

Even though your original jeweler is in Arizona, have you researched or found one to work with out your way?   We just met with our jeweler Monday to look at wedding bands, and ours can duplicate any picture we bring in.  Someone out your way could probably do the same.

  • I love your wedding band, where did you get it?
I'm not a big fan of bezel setting that was the one thing I hoped FI wouldn't do.
I love the bezel setting @cschiano suggested so much!

I think I like the first one best, but that could be because the picture was very BAM! RING!

The more I think about it, the more I like that idea. I'll need to take a picture of it for you guys. It's a bit wider than my current e-ring. It had the 0.50 carat diamond in the center, and then seven diamond chips on each side. Here's my horrible rendition:

    ----------------
     xxx/\xxx
    x    | |      x
     xxx\/xxx
    ----------------

Just imagine that middle part as a round diamond, and the diamond chips a LOT closer together. Allusive, I love your ring and I love the idea of re-dipping it to have something 'new' for your wedding. Which is coming up SO SOON!

suzie211 We're in the really early stages of this whole thing. First I wanted to get an idea of what I want before I started searching for a jeweler. I definitely like the idea of using a local establishment rather than a chain.

@danser55 We got the wedding band from the same place as my e-ring, it's from this place. His website isn't great (his name is Garo), but if you called and gave him DHs name, he'd be able to quote you, I'm sure.

@buggle2 (um, why are you buggle2 and not just buggle? or buggle1?). Oh hai pretty ring. Yes, I will be staring at this all day long. And checking out that site.

  • I love love love the second ring that @allusive007 posted. It is gorgeous and has the unique shape of the stone that you want with a little more openness than a complete bezel.

Whew, I think I got everyone that has commented...

Here is my grandmother's ring. Imagine a diamond where that hole is. And imagine it dipped in white gold. What do we think? I'm kind of in love with it and DH had a positive reaction as well... I just need to find out if it's possible to set a new diamond into it and to get it re-sized. It's about 0.75-1 size too big. I'm kind of kicking myself for not knowing re-dipping was a thing, or I'd have had DH propose with this in the first place!!
