FI's Christmas- (Yes I know it's waay too early, but...)

FI and I are discussing going on a cruise for our honeymoon. Less expensive than Argentina/Antartica (our dream destination) and while we'd be traveling, we'd have the shipboard activities if we wanted to do something in between ports. We're getting married in March, but waiting till May/June to take our honeymoon to combine in FI's graduation trip before grad school. The problem: FI has never been on a cruise before (unless you count 8 months at sea in the US Marines). I want him to experience a short, 3-5 day cruise now, see if he likes it, before we're on a ship for 15 days and he says on day 2 "I don't like this; why did we choose this again?" A port near us has a 5 day 4 night cruise to Cozumel and back between Christmas and New Years. I'm considering getting us a cabin and making that FI's Christmas present from me.

Thoughts on this? Not doing it just because I don't want him complaining on honeymoon- also want him to relax and enjoy himself, and give him something awesome for us to do together as some pre wedding/post holiday alone time.

Re: FI's Christmas- (Yes I know it's waay too early, but...)

  • I think it sounds like a good idea. I think people either love cruises or hate them. We went on a 4 night Royal cruise and loved it. The best part was staying ON the ship when everyone else was at the port location. We got great service and literally a whole pool to ourselves.

@CMGr has been on a lot and has some great advice about booking them.
  • I say go for it.  Will you be able to change or cancel your honeymoon cruise if he doesn't like the first one??  You may want to check on cancellation fees or insurance for the honeymoon trip in case he doesn't like it.  I'd be pretty happy if DH got me a cruise for Christmas, even though I get a little sea sick.

  • I'm not sure why you're worried he wouldn't like it? The only reason I'd be concerned is if he gets sea sick, but if he spent 8 months at sea, I don't see that being a problem.

Either way, if you want to go on a short cruise, I don't see why not. Just make sure your FI doesn't have any huge family traditions between those holidays that you'd be asking him to skip out on. I know some families can get their feathers really ruffled if you skip their Christmas dinner, even if it's held on December 29th.
  • Have you checked out actual prices for Argentina though?  I went last year for 8 days/7 nights for $1400 round trip airfare and hotel.  Don't discount some of the great vacation packages you can find!

But, a cruise does sound great-I get being nervous how he'd like 15 days if he hasn't yet been on a cruise-I've been on one, and while I liked it a lot, I don't know that I could spend 15 days on a boat (we did 5).

I'm not a cruise person, but it doesn't have anything to do with getting sea sick (I don't). I just hate the thought of being on a busy ship with a bunch of other people for days at a time (not to mention 15 days!) When H and I travel, we prefer going someplace secluded, not being around others unless we want to be, having spacious rooms and exploring towns on our own. I also wouldn't want to only have very limited time in the awesome destinations you go to on cruises.

Some people love cruises, and it is a great and inexpensive way to see a lot of countries/cities at once. But for some people, the cruise vacation style is just not up their alley. So OP, I do think if he's never cruised before and you're thinking of going for 15 days, which is a lot of time on a boat, it's a good idea to see if he likes it first.
