What would you want in a kitchen?

If you were gutting and redoing a kitchen what would you want?  drawers instead of shelves?  double oven? granite?  country sink?  Dark cabinets?  What?!

    What wouldn't you want?

From a practical side, how much room do you need for an island?

  • i have drawers instead of shelves on everything below the counter and i love it so much. i never lose anything.
skimp on the oven, splurge on the range. you use the range so much more frequently than two ovens.

if i could change anything in the kitchen, it would be the sink. it's an undermount double sink. i want a farm sink with a built in drainboard.

i have a long tall cabinet next to the oven. i took out all the shelves and mounted my pot rack in there. it's where i would have put all my pots and pans anyway; now they just take up less space.

  • Good question, as we're looking at a kitchen firebombing...I mean remodel, over the summer. It'll be nice to have a semi updated kitchen, but space constraints and $$ hemorrhage is going to take the bliss out of it. And to be honest, our house does not deserve luxuries like granite anything.

  • All of our lower cabinets have the slide out shelves and I LOVE them.  I wish our pantry had those.  I also wish our pantry had solid shelves instead of the white wire shelves.
I like dark wood cabinets, for no particular reason.
A deep sink is a must.
I don't know how much room you need for an island specifically, but if you don't have enough, don't do it.  You can always get a rolling island that you can move if needed I guess.

I'm pretty sold on either drawers or pull out shelves and a sink deep enough for a pot.  I'm not sold on granite.  It takes upkeep I don't know I can commit too.

We have 11' width between walls and will only have one wall of 2' cabinets.  9' seems like enough, but I don't really know.

  • Drawers/pull outs are a must. I'd rather have stainless or butcher block than granite - I want to be able to set down hot pots and sheet pans anywhere, especially when I'm doing something big, like Christmas baking. A hideaway broom cabinet. I have a pegboard for some of my tools, and that's been fantastic. A gas range with six burners.
    image
  • okay, but you can't put hot pans on butcher block; it will burn.
    image
  • On wood? I can't imagine you could start a conflagration with a cookie sheet. I currently use my cutting boards to put things down on the counters if I need to - doesn't seem to have hurt them any.
    image
  • Oh!  A gas range with 6 burners sounds fabulous!
My mom's oven doubles as a convection oven and that seems really handy.

For the island - I think 9 feet is wide enough.   If I think of it, I'll measure ours tonight.
  • are you not familiar with the properties of wood? yes, wood can burn.

    i love my drawers.

i would want a larger sink. mine is too shallow. i also would want a large set of cabinets to mimic a pantry, which I don't have but plan on getting eventually. i also would opt for a larger fridge instead of the one you probably will get. i could use an extra few cubic feet of space.

i actually am not in love with SS, so that's not something that would sell me.

    Pop off!!!
  • Much more cabinet space, I feel like I could use about 40% more.  I would love nicer countertops, tile backsplash, nicer more durable flooring (ugly tile).

I want to firebomb my kitchen too.  Unfortuantely, it's small and oddly/poorly shaped, even if I rip it down to studs.
I'd love the cabinets w/ the pull outs--I hate loosing things in the cabinets.
I also will never have anything that's glass or transparent for cupboards--I want to be able to leave things a mess and close it.
I just want space used well--and I know in my head what doesn't work, but I don't know what does.

I had a kitchen with 2 glass front cabinets and loved it.  I wouldn't mind clear or opaque.  I wouldn't mind a way to display china, but that seems odd in a casual kitchen.
  • I need about 5 more cabinets and 5 more drawers.  I'd love an extra 5 feet or so of counter space.  An island.  Granite countertops.  A flat cooktop.  A walk-in pantry.

We have a list of 'needs' for our next house.  The kitchen is at the top of the list.
  • Under cabinet lighting, lots of natural light, drawers galore, pull out racks for trash and recycling.

  • OMG, natural light is a must.  My kitchen has one tiny window and it can feel like a cave.
  • I am also not a fan of granite.  It looks pretty, but that is about it.  I would much rather have solid surface.

  • Granites full of radon anyways. Especially dependent on the quarry

Emits radon is probably a better descriptor

  • I want the following: - Nicer cabinetry with a mix of drawers and cabinets with pull out shelves. - new appliances (double oven is a must for me) - I'm torn on keeping my counters. I do have granite but I don't love the color. - new sink. I have a black, double sink that is a undermount and I hate it. - I want my wine fridge built in. The wine fridge is actually super handy for entertaining because we can reconfigure the racks a bit and put 2 liters in, etc. - my corner spaces to be better utilized. I hate the I have two large corners that are just dead space- I wish the previous owners would have put in better cabinetry there.

@PMeg and @Hmonkey.  Why do you hate the undermount?
  • Does anyone have the drawer dish washer(s)?  I'm very, very curious about those.

  • @mrs.conn23 - We put this in our kitchen and it made a world of difference:  http://suntunnelskylights.veluxusa.com/consumer/why_sun_tunnel

No view of the sky like a skylight, just sunlight coming in.  It looks like a light fixture in the ceiling.  At Lowe's the materials were only $400 or so.  And the it took the guy about a half day to install it, so whatever labor on that would be in your area.

  • 1) the faucet has to mount on the countertop or wall. water pools around the base of the faucet all the time.
    2) too many things get caught between the sink and the counter.
    3) i dislike that i can't get right up to the sink like i can with an apron or farmhouse sink.

  • Huge island with a sink, double oven, 6 burner range with space the griddle area, pot filler faucet over the stove. I prefer dark cabinets in general and granite.

@zsazsa-stl oh, you mean the fisher paykel dishwashers?  NIGHTMARE AVOID RUN AWAY

expensive, do not get dishes cleaner, and if they break, good luck finding someone who can fix it.

  • This house is not getting any more of my money, Zsa.  OK, as little of my money as possible.

We are actually thinking of knocking down the wall between our kitchen and foyer area to make it a half wall, which will allow for more light into the kitchen if the front door is open.
