Will I have problems with my ID at the airport with my name change?

Hello! I will be changing my name after I get back from my honeymoon (we are coming home July 4th, so the following Monday I will start this process with SS and DMV, etc.) I live in MN now where everything takes a lot longer than what I'm used to. My current license is WI and they just print it up right then and there and you get to leave with it. I just got off the phone with the MN DMV and they said that they are behind right now and I can't expect my new license for 3-4 weeks after I apply, and I can't even apply for my license until my new SS card comes, which would be another week to week and a half. I have a work trip where I will be flying to MI on August 14 and I am worried about airport security. I will have a piece of paper that serves as my temporary official license, but isn't a photo id. My passport will have my maiden name on it because I probably won't have received my new one by that time. Do you think there will be any problem with this? I'm not so worried about flying out of MN because I'm sure our TSA here sees the temp licenses all the time, but I'm more worried about getting home from MI without a photo ID with my new married name on it.

Thoughts?

  • I think a way around this is to bring a copy of your marriage certificate with you.

I would recommend calling TSA or the local airport to find out what they suggest.

Okay, that's a good idea. I believe I do get to keep my old license, so I will bring that with the new papers and a marriage certificate. Thanks!

  • Why don't you just make any travel arrangements in your maiden name until all of this gets taken care of?
  • Just book the tickets in your maiden name and use your passport.

The piece of paper in lieu of a drivers license is pretty common now. WI uses it, too. It will work at the airport. Just bring your marriage license and another ID just in case.
  • I vote for Hoboken's suggestion. As long as the name on the ticket matches the name on your passport you won't have any issues. It seems way less hassle/risk than carting around your temp license, marriage license, etc.

  • I would also just book your ticket in your maiden name.  You won't get hassled that way and there will be no hold ups.

  • One more vote for booking in your maiden name and changing everything after you return.
