Trying to bring on my period early - XP

So I have a cruise coming up in a couple of weeks and I don't want my period to come during that time (which is when it's scheduled.) I've read that drinking parsley tea and taking large amounts of vitamin C are known to bring on your period. I'm willing to try it. I've also heard that placing sprigs of parsley in your vagina will really do the trick. Seriously. I swear. I've read tons of women's posts who have tried it and swear by it. I'm a little weary of doing this because it seems that it might hurt (or possibly get lost...eeewww.) Anyone ever tried this method? Does it hurt? Anyone every lost the parsley? I know how crazy it sounds. But my period is usually pretty darn regular and I don't want to deal with it during the cruise. I've cross-posted this from The Nest.

  • Oh my goodness. I don't know you well enough (or at all) so I REALLY don't want to get into a discussion about your period. However, I will say this: I'd be really leery of any medical advice given out over the internet, especially on a forum like this. You have some time, so give your OBGYN a call and ask him/her about the parsley stuff. Your doctor will probably be able to give you better advice than random herbs to stick in your hootenanny!

If you're on birth control, it's possible to manipulate it to avoid your period, but I must emphasize that (A) I'm not a doctor and (B) I'm not qualified to give you medical advice and (C) don't do anything without consulting an actual doctor.

Have fun on your cruise :)

  • WTF-- go see your doctor if anything.  Does not sounds like a fun to experiment with IMO.

  • Talk to your doctor about it.  I get that periods suck, big time, we all get it.  I personally don't think messing with your natural cycle is worth it, because you're just going to have to do it every time something comes up.  But that's just my 2 cents.  If you're really serious about doing this, talk to your doc.
  • Thejucheidea, I'm not afraid of my period. You shouldn't assume that people are afraid of it. There are so many women like myself who have really brutal periods. Although I am on BC, my period is extremely painful for the first three days. For me it causes so much pain that I become nauseated and vomit. I also have bad diarrhea during that time. I also become kind of weak. Im sure you could imagine how this would be pretty inconvenient during a cruise that I've spent lots of money on. Who wants to hang out in their room and miss all the action.

Trying the tea thing probably wouldn't have any negative effects, so you could try that if you really want. Probably wouldn't stick anything up the vagina, though.

If your period is so terrible, you might want to see a doctor about going on the pill anyway. It helps most people have more manageable symptoms. It's not for everyone, though, so ask your doctor about it.

  • I'd advise talking to a doctor about this, but my period follows my BC cycle nowadays. So, if I stop taking the pill mid-cycle, my period will start a few days later. Then, after my period, I start a new package.

I agree with @hordol -- if your periods are that bad, you need to talk to your gynecologist, because that's not normal. If it's interfering with your life to that kind of degree, you need medical attention.

Also, I say that people are afraid of their periods because of the dozens of posts you see all around this site of people getting completely devastated that their periods are going to be due on their wedding days. There's a definite air of 'this is so gross', especially if you start talking about things like cups and checking the consistency and amount of your menstrual blood.

  • I can't imagine putting herbs inside myself.

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • There is truth to the parsley thing, but most people who decide to use parsley to encourage a period steam over a bowl of parsley tea, not use a pessary. Besides, if you're going to do a parsley pessary, it really needs to be from your own garden so you know that pesticides haven't been used because you shouldn't have pesticides up your cooch.

There are a bunch of ways to encourage your ladystorm naturally, but the way you do it needs to be recommended by a naturopath or herbalist who knows your medical history, not the Internet. Also, none of them are going to work if you're on birth control. None of them.

Methinks someone doesn't know how birth control works :|.

  • I've heard of the raw parsley thing, but I heard it was the oils and seeds...and that it was to be avoided in pregnancy because of something to do with muscle contractions. Same thing for raw peppermint. But you're not pregnant and your cruise is 2 weeks away. I don't think you should mess with your body like that- what if you get sick and can't go on the cruise? I would rather have my period on the cruise than miss the cruise completely.

I'm so glad you said this!  The same thing happens to me when I get my period, and I'm so relieved that I'm not the only one who has to deal with that!  There's only one other person I've met who has this reaction.  Everyone else I've talked to about it doesn't believe me and tells me I'm being dramatic...

Yeah, it's a pretty awful situation you're in.  I can fully sympathize.  Definitely talk to your doctor about it!

  • If you're on BC you can probably just skip the placebo week and go straight to the next pack. Consult your doctor first, but I used to do that all the time when I was on BC.

  • My H works in the film industry, and actresses that have to do certain roles or scenes will go to their doctor to alter it, but they do it well in advance and with the guidance of their doctor. It's NOT a big deal but you should DEFINITELY talk to your doctor before trying to change your body's cycle.
It is not a weird request to ask of your doctor. Just go.
  • Talk to your doctor. I used to just take the placebo pills a week earlier rather than skip them and it worked fine. But I also talked to my doctor before messing around with timing......

I know it's natural, and I'm not ashamed of it. I do think that what happens in and around my vagina is pretty darn personal and not be shared with the masses on the Internet. Please go see your doctor.

  • I've seen a couple of differen docs about my period. Both said that I'm fine and that I just need to manage my symptoms.
  • Wittykitty, I've been dealing with my period being this bad since for about five years now. You're not alone. It's one of the main reasons that I take BC. It is supposed to help with my symptoms, but it really doesn't. Also I don't have a really heavy period either. So physically it's fine but I get these really awful symptoms.
  • Pesematology and Peledreams, many women have to go to their doctor to have tampons or condoms retrieved. Tampons often have to be retrieved if the string unattaches from the tampon.
  • Whyyyy are people so afraid of their period? It's really not that big of a deal!
I'm not afraid of my period, I just fucking hate it.  So I avoid it by continuously taking BC and skipping the placebo pills for the majority of the year.  However, I discussed this all with my OBGYN 1st.

OP, get thee to an OBGYN!!!
