Is this cake option to out there?

So I make these cupcakes that are my favorite - lemon cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese frosting.

I am kind of thinking that is what I want my wedding cake to be - but do you think that is too out of the norm for people? I don't think that I would have different flavored tiers, I think I want to just choose all one type. Unless its recommended to do different tiers?

Also, with an October wedding, is that to summery?

I think since lemon is a strong flavor, it might be nice to have another, more "neutral" option for guests. So, maybe one tier can be lemon and another could be vanilla or chocolate.

  • No.  I don't think it is too summery or too strong.   One question...will your bakery be able to decorate the cream cheese fronsting in an elaborate wedding cake look?

When I asked about it she didn't say anything, but I'm also not going to have it very elaborate. I like simpler cakes decorated with sugar flowers or something like that. She specializes in buttercream decoration so i'm thinking that the consistencies are pretty similar - I would think she can make it smooth!

  • Personally, I would LOVE lemon with raspberry.  But, I know it's a bit strong for some folks. I would just pick one more "muted" flavor.

  • I neglected to mention that I am going to have a grooms 'cake' that is actually a rice krispie treat because FI doesn't like cake. Would that count, or should i still have other cake cake?

  • Asa professional cake decorator I will tell you that buttercream and cream cheese frosting are NOTHING alike.  While both delicious buttercream is extremely easy to make smoot, cream cheese is a pain in the butt.

BTW your cake sounds delicious!!! I love lemon!

  • My cake is going to be two different layers, and one will be lemon poppy seed because I LOVE those muffins so much. I do think there needs to be something else in the cake for others to have an option. I personally can't stand white cake, so I think having any just one flavor is hard for guests, but you also can't make 100% happy 100% of the time, so do what works for you. If the grooms cake isn't actually cake, you probably need two cake flavors, but Rice Krispie does sound awesome.

<div>This is good to know, I will double check with my baker that she can do what I want in that frosting! If not this all might be a moot point anyway.</div>

  • I actually think it's a really nice flavor for summer and nothing too crazy.  By the way, I read the title of this post probably 5 times before I realized it was suppose to be "too", not "to"

Personally, I wouldn't eat a lemon cake. I would suggest having another flavor too. It doesn't have to be a "plain" flavor, but it would give your guests another option.

If I liked the flavor of cake you had and you had rice krispie treats, I would have both. But that's just how I roll.

  • I adore lemon and raspberry, but I know several people who detest lemon anything.  I personally think they are kinda wierd, but it isn't unheard of to have people who don't like it.  I would offer a second flavor.  If I was a lemon cake hater I would be disappointed to have a rice krispie treat instead because I love cake and look forward to that at a wedding far more than the meal.
  • Well,  those would be too strong of favors for me, so I would just pass.  DH  is allergic to raspberries so he's out.

Neither of us would be mad not having cake, but really just pointing out that 1 flavor is not always a good idea when allergies and such might be an issue.  I  think variety is always a good idea.

  • Thanks for the feedback - I am definintely going to rethink the one flavor plan. Maybe I will have to go on some cake tastings to find another combo. :-)

  • I love lemon. I hate raspberry.  I would eat around the raspberry. Other people love that.

Could you go 2 tiers? One lemon raspberry and one chocolate ?

  • I'm not a fan of either lemon cake or raspberry filling. If there was a good dinner I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about not having cake, but it would seem like a shame to have a large portion of guests not have a cake flavor they enjoy.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re:Is this cake option to out there? : Seven flavors, not nine, and three of those were "plain" - chocolate, white and yellow.  I ordered two of the chocolate and white, because we thought more people would prefer the more traditional flavors.  But these were the three that we actually all had significant amounts leftover.  The "nontraditional" - carrot, strawberry, lemon and hazelnut were all gone, and very quickly.

Stage's point was with 7 flavors there was enough variety.    If you only had 2 flavors, say "carrot"  and one plain,  I bet more people would have eaten the "plain" version.

  • I would love the lemon and raspberry, but like PP said, a lot of people are not fans of lemon. We did 3 flavors of cupcakes: lemon, strawberry, and amaretto. We had more lemon left over than anything.

    That would have been me.

OP - have you considered having a groom's cake?  Our wedding cake was the traditional vanilla almond and the groom's cake was pumpkin spice.

They are having a grooms "cake".  It is a rice krispy cake.

OP, I think you need to have a bit more variety.  The flavor you picked sounds fine (not something that I would eat but to each their own) but you should really have a more traditional flavor along with it.

Also, I do not think that a rice krispy cake would be a good substution for another traditional flavor cake.

We are having three flavors. the biggest tier will be almond, the middle tier will be lemon with raspberry filling and the top tier will be chocolate!
  • I'm having 4 flavored. Biggest tier is white almond with a pastry cream filling. Other 3 are lemon with raspberry, red velvet with dream cheese, and chocolate with dark fudge. Any opinions about the order of the last three?
  • We are having 6 flavors:
    1. hazelnut cake with a filling of hazelnut mousse and hazelnut meriangue (two layered filling) covered in chocolate ganache

    2. lemon cake with lemon curd filling and lemon French buttercream frosting

    3. caramel cake with dulche de leche filling and caramel French buttercream frosting

    4. coconut cake with shredded coconut/frosting filling and French buttercream coconut frosting with coconut

    5. vanilla cake with seedless raspberry preserve filling and raspberry French buttercream frosting

    6. chocolate cake with semi-sweet chocolate mousse filling and chocolate French buttercream frosting

We are not having a groom's cake. The hazelnut will be the smallest layer. The largest layer will probably be the lemon/lemon curd. We are also serving an Ice Cream Sundae Buffet with 4 flavors of ice cream (lemon, cinnamon, Tahitian vanilla bean and Dutch Cocoa) and 10 toppings.

I hope because of all these choices, everyone will have at least one dessert they really enjoy and that anyone with an intolerance to dairy, a nut allergy etc. will manage to still enjoy something and not feel left out or slighted.

You dug up a 3-month old thread to add this?

  • Now that it's here - in case anyone is curious I am probably going with the original idea - lemon with raspberry, plus white cake with salted caramel filling and yellow cake with chocolate filling.

But I have a tasting scheduled in a couple of weeks so I won't know for sure until then. :-)

Your additions sound great! I wouldn't have eaten the lemon cake.
  • We decided on the top and middle tiers being orange with vanilla butter cream while the bottom tier will be chocolate and vanilla with vanilla butter cream and when cut guests will get a piece of each!

  • Personally, I would love that. But I think its too specific of a taste for a whole wedding. You could do just a lemon cake or just a raspberry filled vanilla/chocolate cake.
  • had my tasting we're not doing it at all.

The salted caramel/white cake won the biggest layer, then marble with french creme, then chocolate with raspberry.

  • I would suggest having the lemon cake as your main cake, then having some simple sheet cakes of white and/or chocolate cake for guests that don't want the lemon. This will be cheaper, and your fancy lemon cake won't have to be as large.
