Marriage license - Name changes

I know this is discussed every so often but now I am wondering :)  Tory and I are going to get our marriage license tomorrow since he is on spring break and it will be easiest for us to get in during their hours.

I know on the application you have to put what your full name will be after you get married, but does it REALLY matter?  I have been thinking about adding my current last name to my current middle last name because I just feel bad totally dropping it.  However, I haven't for sure decided yet what I am going to do.  I know that I will be taking Tory's last name as my last name but the middle name is still up in the air.

So, if I just put Kayla-Current Middle-Tory's Last, on the application will it be legit if when I actually change my name I add my last name to my middle?

I could have just called some where and asked this but that required more effort :)

Hmm I don't know for sure but I wouldn't think it really matters, since you don't even ahve to be married in order to change your name.  You could go change it tomorrow to Princess Consuela Bananhammock if you wanted to  ;)  Plus i am sure people change their minds after they've applied for their marriage license before.

I think it does matter because they file in their county and then print it up and send you the license for your Witnesses to sign which you will then take to all the other places.

I think if you whited-out or changed it  perhaps the SS Office wouldn't take it or DMV etc.

LOL @ Kari for the Phoebe reference. :)

YES, it matters.  Whatever you put on your license is how you legally have to change your name during the marriage process.  True, you could go and change your name later, but you'll have to go to court and it's not cheap.

    I did:
Stephanie middle maiden HLast.  The guy at the SSO screwed it up and added a hyphen so it's now "middle-maiden" which is fine.  But the DMV wouldn't take it any other way, and neither would my work HR department.

So, choose what you want and make sure that's exactly how it's written on your marriage license.

<div>Exactly.  You'd be tampering with an official, legal document.  Hell, the SS office almost didn't take my marriage license because it had something spilled on it, and he questioned whether it was the real one.  </div>

Kayla - I don't think it makes things more complicated, but you will have to be more diligent and make sure the right names go in the right boxes, and that people who are typing it up know how you want it to be.

I think what you should think about is how you guys want to name your children. Will they have it hypened as well? thats how my step mom did it -  If not, then are you okay with having a slightly different last name as them? ETA: I don't know how you feel about it but some women feel strongly either way.

I know several people who just make their last name their (maiden name - his last name)   I have a friend who every time we write out checks to her its her first name then Greene-Shultz. gets a little annoying, but at least you can keep both last names :)
  • edited December 2011

I don't want to hypenate the last names, I just want to make my maident name a part of my middle name.  More like hyphenate my middle name just because I feel sad completely getting rid of it.  My mom did the same thing, used her middle name and then added her maiden to it and took my dad's last name.

To clear it up simply.... I do NOT want to hypen my last name... my only last name once I get married will be Tory's last name :)

My co-worker did this & loves that she still get's to include her maiden name.  So now it's, first name Olson McDonough.  That may be something for you to consider also!  = )

Nope, not at all.  In fact, it's helped.  I got my Driver's License pretty quickly, then got sick of the name change stuff.  Even though one of my credit cards are in my maiden name, no one cares, because that name is also listed on my driver's license.

I mean, really? Not one cares about your middle name except you anyway.  Almost everyone knows me now as "Stephanie Hlast", but I like knowing my maiden name is still part of me too.  Does that make sense?

I had a friend growing up whose mom hyphenated her last name, and the kids also got the hyphenated last name.  It was a total PITA for them, because half the time they'd be alphabetized under the first name, half the time they'd be filed under the second name.

I have children with my ex husband and kept his lastname after the divorce (to have the same name as my kids) and I decided this time around to ditch my middle name and make my current lastname my middle and take my fiances lastname...so Stacy Schaeffler Barden will be on all legal documents and for school stuff I will just write out my full name so it will cross reference easily.

I got my marriage license in December when I was home in MN, and since I applied I've been having regrets about not putting my current last name into my middle name.. I wonder if I can go back there and ask them to change it since its not signed or anything...

I hope you figure out what you are going to do, Kayla, :) I can't imagine how much of a PITA it is to change it later in court. I am going to just take out my maiden name and take FI's last name. I struggled thinking about it for awhile, because I feel really attached to my maiden name. But I didn't want to take out my middle name, because I love it. And I didn't want to do my middle then maiden, because my name would be super long and I just would get annoyed by that. ;) Soooo I'm just gonna change it and take away my maiden name.

    haha, never counted but I'll be: 6 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 28 and 11 syllables :)
  • edited December 2011
Mine would be 7 + 5 + 8 + 8 = NO THANK YOU haha I'm not that attached to my maiden name. (However the closer I get to giving it up the more nostalgic I get-- actually it didn't hit me until my Dad passed)
