I'll just say I know this family pretty well and am 99% confident there will be no books unless someone else buys them.  I watched this girl grow up and babysat her enough.  There were no books in her childhood.  She's 19.  Her friends are 19.  They are going to pick up the pink leopard print because it's what they want for their own kid(s).  It's how Appalachia works.

The only books I'm considering registering for are bi-lingual books, since I don't think people would think of us wanting them otherwise.  But if we don't get them, we'll buy them ourselves, obviously.

My sisters refuse to buy Buffy books.  They say they're certain it won't be a problem :-P

6, in that case, i'd just buy a frickin case of Sandra Boyton books and call it a day.

    this is really, really common.

you might want to consider signing the child up for dolly parton's imagination library, if it serves that area.

@hmonkey- I know it serves the area because we were signed up.  I didn't think it was appropriate, but the director said they need numbers to show need.  We got some oddball stuff, but some really good ones too.  I sent them a link weeks ago.

Did I tell you guys that one of the last times I went kid-book shopping in the thrift store, there were like 5, still in the shrinkwrap, still had mailing addresses, Imagination Library books?

I was annoyed by that--at least unwrap them!  And who doesn't love "Llama Llama misses mamma?"
(and then I thought more depressing things like 'maybe their kid died' and I was glad I hadn't gotten to judgey.  Although I think "grandma signed us up for this, lets ditch the books" is more likely)
