Christmas

My dad's family has all the siblings buy for each other (4 couples total) and they spend about $50/couple.  Then we've done just one present for each kid (usually it's the godparents buying for the niece/nephew).  I think each 'grow up' couple spends about $25 on two kids, so ti's about $100 total for them.

It'll be weird now.  FI and I are both the oldest kids/grandkids in our families, so we're the first to get married.  Most of my cousins are under the age of 13; my siblings are only 12, 15, and 17.

I'm not sure what we'll do.  We've always spent about $100 on our parents (4 sets.)  which seems to be a a good amount.  FI and I spend about $200 on each other, and usually go out for a nice meal for birthdays.

I used to do gift exchanges with friends in college, but now I just tend to bake for the rest of our friends.  I love baking, but my wedding dress probably won't this holiday season....

We get paid every other week at my job, and we always end up with a 3rd (extra) check in  June and December. I usually just use that third December check to cover Christmas presents :)

I'm a little late, but this is how we break it down.

My mom's family:  Just my mom and my step-dad.  Max of $75 each

My dad's family: Just my dad and step-mom.  Max of $75 each

I'm also an only child, so that is why we tend to spend more on my side.

DH's parents:  We aren't speaking to his mom and dad right now so I don't know what we're doing this year, but last year it was about $50 for each of his parents since all of the kid's pool their money together for one big gift.

DH's siblings (5 of them, plus any long term BF/GFs):  We did a secret santa last year and it turned out relatively well, in that it was the cheaper alternative.  It's also less work to buy for one person rather than 5+.  The only downside is that his siblings told each other who they had drawn, so there was no surprise.  Also, some people couldn't figure out how to put a list together and then got all pissy when they didn't get what they wanted.

Other family (grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins): We don't buy gifts, just send Christmas cards.  It would get way too expensive otherwise

  • I'm really glad you started this thread b/c budgeting for the holidays always kills me.  (It also hurts that it's my bday right before Christmas, DD's right after and FI's in Feb)

Last year, we spent ~$100 on the parents (there's only 3), ~$200 on my DD, probably $100 on my nephew (my brother's son) and then $30-$50 on my other nieces and nephews (my friends kids).

We do small or gag gifts with our close friends.  My bff and I have a tradition of finding the most ridiculous ornaments for each other and the rule is you have to hang them every year.  This has been going on for 6-7 years and now even our family members help us "hunt" for the best ornanment.

This year I'm hoping to make more gifts and cut down on spending.  I'll let you know how that goes.

I never really have a set budget, but I try not to go TOO overboard (although sometimes I do).

I buy for FI, mom, dad, stepmom, nephew (and now soon to be niece or nephew). But then I also have Hannukah. For that FI and I buy for his niece and nephew and we also do something similar to a Secret Santa for the adults with a $100 limit on that one gift.

I'd say overall, between Christmas and Hannukah, I spend between $1000-1500.

But this year, FI and I decided that we were doing too much for Christmas for each other, so we've put a limit on the number of gifts we get each other. Not sure if that will really change the amount of money spent, but it'll definitely keep me from shopping way too much lol.

Edit - you guys crack me up ;)

Edit - Why the freak are my posts coming up centered? Are they showing up like that for everyone else too?
