Addressing Invites

I am not using an inner envelope. We have several guests that are not in serious relationships, but we want to allow them to bring a guest if they'd like. How should I address that on the envelope? Is it improper to write "Mr. John Smith and Guest" on the envelope?

You can certainly do that. But if they are seeing anyone even if you don't deem it as "serious", you should find out the the guest's name.

Yep, only if they don't consider themselves to be in a relationship at all should you write "and guest".  Otherwise, find out the name of their SO.
