Wedding Woes

I cringe at the thought of..

A bridal shower.. I have no idea why but the thought of having one just makes me cringe, it's not just limited to a bridal shower but also a baby shower. I can go to them and like to attend but the thought of having on in my behalf makes me cringe. I cant really put my finger on the exact reason maybe a mix of attention on me and the potential of people spending money ..Am I the only one who's like this?

  • Don't accept any that people offer to throw for you. Problem solved. And no, you're not the only one who feels that way. I enjoyed my showers personally and will enjoy my baby shower some day when I'm pregnant, but I like the spotlight.

  • I've never been to a shower, but I'm also horrified of the idea of having one thrown for me!  I hate being the center of attention and the idea of a party to give me presents is kind of appalling to me.  I've also been told that I tend to look terrified while opening presents.  I also totally suck at faking it when I open a gift I don't like.  I mean I try, but I'm pretty sure it shows that I'm disappointed.  My MOH loves throwing showers and is super disappointed I don't want one.  Thankfully, most of my guests live 10+ hours away, so it was pretty easy to talk her out of one.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who opted not to have a shower. I hated doing a wedding registry as well. I just enjoy doing things for others rather than someone doing something for me.

  • I turned down the shower that was offered to me. If you don't want to have one, then just say no if someone brings it up.

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Exactly what I did. I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings but its not something I wanted.

  • sure, it's not something you wanted, but why can't you accept a gift gracefully? it's not just the actual gifts at the shower, but also the gift of a shower.

if someone is offering to host a shower for you, they are probably close enough that you can ask them to not make you the center of attention and make it just like a nice little brunch. i've attended showers which were just like friends getting together, and it was nice not to play games or watch someone open the same gift twice.

  • It's not really much of a gift if it's something you hate.  You can say "no, thanks" to any and all showers to be thrown for you.

I hate those things, too, and it angers me to no end that being female means being obligated to go to those f*cking awful wastes of time.

I am pretty shy so I definitely have shower anxiety as well. Actually the whole wedding and being the center of attention makes me nervous. My mother was crushed when I told her no shower. She is the opposite of me and literally throws a party like every other week "just for fun". I felt bad. We are paying for our wedding ourselves and I haven't really involved her. She kind of sees the shower as "her" thing. So my compromise is keeping the shower super small. Like def under 15-20 ppl. Not so nerve racking for me. She still gets to plan and host an event. Maybe this is an option for you??
  • I don't mind throwing a get together party type thing where everyone is having fun but being the center or attention isn't my thing. Everyone was on board with me not wanting a shower so I feel better about my decision to not have one.
