XP: Favorite Fish

I posted this on the food board, but that doesn't seem to get too much traffic, so I figured I would post this here as well.

FI and I are not huge fish people.  We only eat shellfish.  We are trying to come up with a fish option for our entrees.  Someone mentioned that maybe we should do Sea Bass.  Salmon also seems to be a favorite.  So, I'm curious, what is your favorite type of fish?

What time of year is your wedding and where?

My answer is:  local, seasonal, fresh fish.

So while "sea bass" might sound great - depending on when/where your wedding is - you could be eating either frozen sea bass or something flown halfway around the world that isn't exactly "fresh" caught.

  • Tilapia and salmon are my favorites.
  • Ditto xcalygrl.  White fishes don't taste as "fishy", so they're a good choice for something like this.  I love tilapia, cod, haddock, perch, bass. etc.  But I really hate salmon because it's too strong for me.  Tilapia is the fish that got me to start liking fish :)

Ok - so I see your wedding is in September in NJ.

Regional fresh, seasonal fish at that time of the year that would be good to serve your guests:
    Tuna
    Flounder
    Sea Bass

    ETA:  Mahi Mahi

  • I love Sea Bass, but it's a more "meatier" fish, and easy to overcook. I think salmon or a light whitefish would be more of a crowd pleaser. Is there someone-MOH, MOB, MOG, who does like fish who would come to a tasting and give you an opinion?

  • I am glad I asked this question.  I had no idea that fish are seasonal.

From all of your suggestions, I think I have eliminated salmon.  I didn't realize it was a "fishy" tasting type of fish.  I tried it once and wasn't a fan, but that's not saying much because I am extremely picky.  But I guess I should try sticking to a white fish.

This is very helpful.  Thanks ladies!

Unfortunately our venue doesn't do tastings (they say their reputation speaks for itself) so picking the fish is even more difficult for us. I wish we could sample a few different types of fish.  I asked my mom whose a fish person and she mentioned the Sea Bass and Salmon.  I think she also mentioned Talapia as well.

  • I had salmon for the first time at my wedding and loved it. So that's my vote.

  • Maybe I'm weird. I generally can't stand white fish - but I'll eat tuna or salmon any day of the week.

  • I think of salmon and tilapia as being the most "common" fish - the type people who don't go out of their way to eat a lot of seafood might still try if they sometimes enjoy fish. Another thought - buy some yourselves and cook it up! I like to do salmon with lemons and bay leaves wrapped in foil and baked, or tilapia with olive oil and old bay seasoning, either on the grill or in a pan.

  • I pretty much like any white fish. Halibut or mahi mahi are probably my favorites.

For some reason, salmon tends to be the  de rigueur fish for weddings, but it's an oily, fishier fish (although it's super healthy and, I think, delicious). Try a white fish. I think halibut, tilapia or cod are pretty solid options.

Also, check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch (you can download a guide for your area). It'll tell you what's sustainable and not over- or illegally fished.
  • Truly fresh fish shouldn't taste or smell fishy. I would go with salmon or tuna, though both can be easily overcooked.

  • Barf, I hate all seafood.

I am now realizing that this response wasn't helpful.  I've seen salmon, mahi, and tilapia on a lot of wedding menus if that's helpful at all.

Eh, tilapia is effectively the equivalent of "chicken" in the fish world.  It is predominantly a cheap, farm raised fish that has a bland taste and so it appeals to the commercial fish/restaurant market.   That's why I wouldn't recommend that option.

  • Everyone for the most part seems to like white fish or tuna, so I think I might go in either of those directions.  I'm thinking of asking the venue what their most popular white fish entree is and see if I can go from there.  Hopefully they will say that they have one entree that is extremely popular or one that they specialize in.

  • I love skatefish and sole. We're serving the latter at our wedding. I'm soooooo, so excited.
  • I love Sea Bass, but boo most of it isn't sustainable or responsible to eat. :*(

I hate Salmon, because almost nobody cooks it right.

Our menu has scallops. May I inquire as to the nature of these illegal acts?

  • I don't like seafood at all, but if you're going to pick a fish option for an entree, salmon and tilapia are the two that I see most often when I'm at any event that's serving a fish option, so I'm going to guess either of those is a safe bet.

  • Mine is salmon! I like Article Char a lot too, it's very similiar to salmon.
  • A word of advice about tuna, since it sounds like you are considering it. It is best cooked very rare, and some people might not necessarily be expecting it that way, especially if they haven't had it before. I love tuna steak, but it's not everyone's thing. I'd stick to a white fish to please more people instead.
  • I had a blonde moment and was thinking about fish for an aquarium. (I just watched Fish Tank Kings yesterday).

I love every type of fish, it just has to be fresh. Salmon, tuna, and red fish are my favs.

Maybe it wasn't obvious enough because I'm still pretty new, but mine was sarcasm and a joke in response to the fish centerpiece thread...
