Wedding Invitations & Paper

When to set the RSVP by date?

Hello fellow Knotties. My wedding is set for Januray 4th, 2014. Invitations by Dawn is having an amazing sae that I was to take advantage of, so I'm making my invitations now. I just don't know when to set the RSVP date for. I know it needs to be at least 2 weeks before the wedding, but that'll put the RSVP right before Christmas. I know that'll be a very busy time for everyone. Should I set the RSVP by date for a full month before the wedding? And when should I send out the invitations? I know 6-8 weeks is standard but will I need to give a little more notice? Thanks!

Re: When to set the RSVP by date?

  • 6-8 weeks is typical for invitations, and 2-4 weeks is typical for an RSVP date (depending on when you need to get your numbers to the caterer).  To avoid being too close to the holidays, I would probably send invitations at 8 weeks and set the RSVP date for 4 weeks.

I'm getting married Oct. 13. Our caterer needs a final headcount Oct. 7. Our RSVP date is Sept. 25, because I figure that gives us enough time to wait for late RSVPs and to call anyone who doesn't RSVP. We're mailing them out Aug. 13 -- two months before the wedding and about six weeks before the RSVP date.

Your RSVP date should be dictated by what your venue/caterer needs -- our venue/caterer needs a final headcount the Monday before our Sunday wedding. Ask your venue/caterer what they need. They might be able to give you a better idea.

Otherwise, I'd move the RSVP date up -- at least a week before Christmas, maybe more. I'd also correspondingly mail out your invites earlier, say late October.

ETA: Did you send STDates? If you did, people will likely already know whether they can attend.

  • Thank you! @Libby2483, that's exactly what I did.
