NWR - car reviews

I am on the hunt for a new (or used) car. The contenders are a Ford Edge, BMW X5 or an Infiniti FX35. Anyone have any thoughts/reviews on those three cars?

  • I've wanted an Edge FOREVER! I was sooo close to getting one and then things fell through with a dealer trade. I wanted black. No other color. The dealership I work with didn't have one so they were working with another one to get it and last minute, backed out. At that point, I already sold my car and needed something. Now I drive the new Fusion. Its no Edge, but I still love it.

Of those 3, I would choose BMW or Infiniti over a Fix Or Repair Daily. :)

BUT..I have a 2010 Nissan Rogue SL. It is the first vehicle that I've ever bought that I absolutely love. I have always been the dealers best customer, always buying new cars every 2 years. The Nissan Rogue is the first vehicle that I've bought that I would buy and buy again. I've had it 3.5 years now and still love it. Just got it detailed about a month ago and it looks brand new. :)
  • FI has a 2004 Ford, never had one single issue. Im on my second Ford. The only reason its my second is because I wanted an upgrade. FI's family have used Fords forever with farming and never any issues.

I think to each their own with regards to brands. I think its unfair for people to go around and smack talking other brands, just because 1. They had one bad vehicle of that brand, or 2. They grew up in a family that was particular to one particular brand.

My family was ALL GM vehicles. I converted to Ford and now my brother has. My stepdad is even considering it.

We actually have experience with all of the above, sorta-kinda.

I personally only buy American. I have the Mercury Mariner, which is the upgraded Ford Escape. It is "beefier" and "makes a better sound" and in some ways (not all) "better" than the Toyota (larger) SUV that my FI bought (the same day I bought mine. Seriously. Kinda funny. Just happened we both needed new cars the same weekend.) I bought it new in 2010 and LOVE it. The other car at the time I was also really considering was the Cadillac SRX. It was just a bit more and although I probably could swing it, I didn't want to go there. I'm happy with my decision (and of course, Mercury is now defunct.)

His sister has the BMW - I've driven in it, driven it, and actually don't like it. I love the look of the car. I don't like the handling as much and I'm tall and don't really fit in it. Honestly - it hurts my back for days after whenever I'm in it. I don't get it -  it's so pretty and I considered getting one, but had to rule it out. A bf from high also had it and we drove it often. I love the look, but not how it actually works for me.

And the Infiniti is owned by another close family member. I have not driven it personally but have been in it many times (front passenger seat). (ETA: I did once back it out of the driveway to move it.)  I like it, but don't see any reason to buy Infiniti over any other brand. I guess it's "luxury" but to me, it really isn't.

Now, being a few years older and even more secure in my job, I would also consider the Lincoln MKX.

ETA: Also, if you care about where they are made, look it up. Cadillac SRX was made in Mexico, even though it is an American car. That also swayed me a bit.

And, I also considered the Rogue (this was also in 2010) 4 cylinder = me not buying it. Sounds weird, but I would only consider 6.

Father has a mustang from 1999 - close to 200,000 miles and never had an issue.

  • EVERYONE I know who's owned a BMW has had to pay a FORTUNE in repairs.  Ditto the Infinities.

My Fords have all been fan-freaking-tastic.  My parent's Fords, ditto.  The only reason we get rid of them is once normal wear-and-tear is starting to impact the vehicle and we're ready for upgrades.

My Ford Explorer was the car-love of my life.  I miss that thing every.single.day.  I'm currently in an Escape, which I love, but not as much as I loved my Explorer.  Actually, FI is in my Escape, I'm in his 1/2 ton SX Ford.  We'll be upgrading to a 1-ton in a year or so.  He's looking at buying a brand new Fusion (or is the Focus?  I can't remember anymore) tomorrow or Saturday.

Honestly, I'm a fan of Ford.  I personally only have experience, of the 3 listed, with that company.  I have had friends with the other brands who have mentioned their issues to me.

Actually, as I was looking for my Escape, I wanted an Edge, but couldn't find any in my price range.

Good luck Schellz!!  Can't wait to see what you end up with!!  :)
  • Thanks everyone! This feedback has been fantastic! I currently have a G35x Infiniti (Clyde) - but my CPO warranty is about to end - hence why I'm in the market :). Prior to the Clyde I had Jack - who was a Saturn - so I obviously don't have brand loyalty. I will say I love how Clyde drives - however, if I can get a better deal - I'd easily switch.

  • I initially agreed with the 4 cylinder not being good, but my Altima is a 4 and it drives like a 6, which is what I had before.  Nissan's don't need the bigger engine, and I drive in insane Western NY winters.  FI has a Rogue and it drives really nice.  Also has the ability to downshift either on the steering column or the floor which is nice in tough terrain or steep hills.  Only complaint with Nissans is that they come in through California so they have to satisfy Cali emissions standards, so O2 sensors tend to go.

The next vehicle we are getting is a truck, and we are getting either Ford or Dodge.  I think you need to figure out where you drive (miles, terrain and weather) and cost of maintenance.  BMW are very expensive to fix, just a heads up.
  • @shaylagirl - I agree with paying a fortune for repairs.  So far Clyde has been covered under the warranty - but I only have two more months that it is covered - and I don't want to pay a fortune for repairs :)

I love my Neon and don't want to give it up to my FI when we get a new car next year. I have not had any major issues with it.  Over 75,000 miles and 8 years old.

My one suggest is to by from a dealer close to where you live, so you do not have to take it far when you need anything fixed that is under warranty.  At least that is the advice my FFIL says and he owns a family owned auto store.
Wow, I have only had my car 3.5 years and I already have 75,000 miles on it!

I bought my Nissan Rogue new from a dealership and can take it to any nissan dealership to have warranty issues fixed, not just the one I bought it from.
  • My fiancée is obsessed with cars! He really likes the in depth reviews done by a guy whose YouTube channel is called saabkyle. He will tell you everything about pretty much any car!

If you have any questions regarding the new fusions, ask me! I just bought the 2013 back in December. Theres some stuff I am still learning about it.

  • I'm no help, I have an 09 Mazda6, which I adore.  I drove 200 miles to buy it because I wanted a specific trim level and color. Totally worth it!  4 years in an only 34K in mileage, but then again I live 8 miles from my office.

I WISH I only lived 8 miles from my work. I am about 25, fiance is about 60 miles. She has to drive to hell and back...aka LA Traffic!
  • FI's work is a mile from home. From May to mid-October when its nice out he takes the mo-ped instead of his truck. I am 6 miles from home.

  • Okay, a 60 mile commute is bollocks.

I used to think my 43 mile commute was craptastic!!  Your fiance wins!!

Yep, she leaves home at 530am to not sit in morning rush hour traffic and doesn't leave work till after 7pm to skip evening rush hour. She is basically home 8:30/9pm - 530am during the week.
  • i have a subaru legacy! owned a jeep grand cherokee before that and i love both of them!!

OH, to go back to the original post though, we did just buy her the new Mazda CX-5. I think she gets approximately 34 mpg, so thats a bonus compared to her last car was a Nissan Xterra that got about 18 mpg

I may have a short distance, but it takes me anywhere between 30-55 minutes to get to the different locations.  I am not going through tunnels or it would be even longer.
My 6 mile drive can take almost 40 mins on a nice snow stormy day. I have three turns and the main stretch of my drive is a county high way with fields on both sides of the road. Makes for a "fun" drive.

  • I'm about 20 miles from work and it takes about 35/40 minutes to get in depending upon the time of year (summer is NORMALLY less crazy because teachers/students are off the road). Nice part is FI and I commute together and I drop him off at the metro by my office.

On a car note - re-test drove the Edge last night and loved it. I'm headed to Florida tonight to visit one of my BFF's and then on Sunday/Monday headed back to Ford to see what I can get. If that doesn't work out - I'll have the X5.  They both rode fantastically - just came down to the bells and whistles and gas mileage.

@schellzinator are you familiar with AAA? You can go on their website and look up how much the dealer paid for a particular car. Its good ammo when going in to buy a new vehicle and negotiating your price. If you are looking for used, its not so helpful. Good Luck!!
  • I drive seven miles each way to work and my fiance drives 17 miles each way. Neither of us hit traffic because of our work schedules -- I'm 630 to 1630 and he's 600 to 1500.

I drive a 2011 Honda Fit named Gilded Lily and she's amazing. I love my car. My fiance drives a 1999 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight and it's a piece of shit. We're planning to replace it with a Honda Civic or Accord later this year.

  • I love that everyone names their cars! I haven't named my current or last car, but my high school car (a red '87 Ford Tempo that was my elderly neighbors - who sideswiped a semi before I purchased it) had a name - she was 'the beauticle'. Because she was in rough shape. I put as many bumper stickers as possible on her though! My favs were the planned parenthood condom ones and the Chingy one. Not that I listened to Chingy, it was just funny. (I had a friend who worked at a record store and got tons of random musician stickers)

  • To join in on the fun, I drive exactly 2 miles to work (just google mapped it), have not named my car, and don't put bumper stickers on the actual car (but have the letter initials of the vacation island of our shore home and a sticker of a Boston Terrier on the back window)

FI drives 6.9 miles to work. We have very short commutes and are very happy that way.

  • My FI and I have three a 93 Subaru Impreza a 95 BMW M3 and a 05 Kia Spectra.  I would say that BMW's are just fine if you know of a smaller shop to do your maintenance and repairs once the warranty is gone, but it doesn't sound like you let them run out so either way it shouldn't matter how much the repair cost is on anything if it's covered in the first couple of years. I would just look at the cost of maintenance, which could be reduced from the dealers prices if you find a smaller euro shop, which will not void any warranty with the dealer.  After the wedding we are looking to upgrade my Kia for a BMW 328xi, but I know a euro shop that we can take it to, which is one of the only reasons I would consider it.

  • My first car was a New Beetle named the Beriimobile.

I don't put bumper stickers on the car, but I do tape them inside the back window.

The Beauticle is a great name!  I have named all of mine. Currently I have Theodore, who is a Passat. Good luck OP on your new car search/purchase.  I look forward to hearing how it all turns out for you.

I have an awesome commute of only .2 miles but then again I live where i work so there are major downsides..

as far of the car...im really no help

  • Man, it's tradition in our family to name vehicles!

I've had Baby (Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera), Tammy Faye (Ford Taurus), Bonnie Blue (Honda Civic), Snowrabbit/"Rabbit" for short (Ford Explorer), Sammy (VW Beetle) and Sparky (Ford Escape).

FI's truck is The Gray Ghost (Ford 1/2 ton).

Bumper stickers?  Not really on any of my cars (I did one on my first car); I prefer the personalized plate holder.  I've had the same one on my Explorer, my Beetle and my Escape; it's a metal plate with spikes on it.  People used to crack UP when they'd see it on my Bug.  :)

I do want to do some of those decals for my horses on my cars.  I had actually bought SPECIFIC decals for my Explorer, since I'd named him in honor of a character in one of my favorite anime series, but I never got around to putting them on.

So, do we have a new car yet?  :)
