cake near tragedy!

Friends of ours got married on Saturday night.  The venue was about an hour away from their cakemaker.  The cake was specially made for the bride and groom to cut because the bride is gluten free.  Everyone else was having cupcakes.  The bride was really stressed about how the cake would get to the venue when I saw her a few weeks ago, so I volunteered to bring it since the cakemaker is only 15 minutes from my house.

We had plans to meet Saturday at 4 by my house.  When we got there, the cakemaker was nowhere to be found.  At that point I got a phonecall from her.  She had been sideswiped a short distance away!  She was upset and crying saying that the cake was destroyed!

DH and I immediately drove to where she was (he is a volunteer EMT in the area too).  The car was a mess, but the cakemaker was fine.  She opened the trunk to show us. . . . . . .there was cake everywhere!!!

It turns out she was transporting 2 cakes.  One had been completely destroyed.  It was in pieces all over the trunk.  My friend's cake was still standing (only 2 layers) but it looked like the cake itself may have exploded a bit, it was a bit wonky under the fondant.  It didn't look all that bad, certainly not nearly as bad as we feared from the phonecall.

The whole way to the cakemaker we were calling bakeries to see if anyone had a gluten free cake available last minute. . . . we were so nervous for what we would see!  We ended up taking the cake as it was, and called the groom to let him break it to the bride gently.

At least they'll have a funny memorable story to look back on!!

Unrelated, the MOH later gave a riveting speech about how she was the happiest person in the room because she would get her life back the next day and not have to listen to the bride, her sister, talk about wedding stuff every again.  It was soooooooo uncomfortable!

Oh my...how did the bride do with all of this? Hope she had a great day despite all of that!

She seemed to cope quite well.  I think that the groom waited until after the ceremony when they were sharing a glass of champagne and relaxing to tell her.

It was nice of you to get her cake, and I'm glad it wasn't too badly hurt. The poor owner of the completely destroyed cake. :(
The only thing that made me feel a little bit better about the other cake is that it didn't appear to be a wedding cake, I think it was just for a family party. . . . not that you want to see anyone's cake ruined. . . . . but especially not a wedding cake!
  • Yikes! You know I hate to see any cake horror stories!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Oh man, that was a close call! I'm so glad that the cake was salvageable! Otherwise Addie might have had a stroke.

I was in a wedding last year where the cakemaker did the flowers too, and she got in an accident on the way to the church. She was carrying flowers for three other weddings as well. Of everything in her car, ONLY our bouquets survived. The other weddings didn't get flowers, and our reception had no centerpieces. She ran home to make a sheet cake and a small cake for the bride and groom to cut into. The groom made the HUGE mistake of telling the bride all this as they were walking back up the aisle.

I have this mental image of the photographer capturing a picture of what looked like a sweet moment... the groom whispering in the bride's ear... then the bride suddenly looks horrified.  Definitely one of those moments that isn't funny at the time but (hopefully) is funny to look back on in the future.
  • I just hope the second cake was also gluten free. If that second cake got all over the gluten free cake, the bride might not have the best honeymoon...
  • Yeah, I'm with @MoonlightSilver -- as someone with celiac disease, I would be terrified to eat that wedding cake if the other cake wasn't GF. Cross-contamination is a bitch.
