[Answered, Thank you!] Help me choose between two dresses!

Hello everyone! I need a hand here. I can't decide between two dresses. One is much more simple... it's lovely, and flattering, and safe. Which may be good looking back in 20 years, or it might be just that: safe. The other flatters my figure, but it's a little more over the top with all the ruffles. I can't decide. Leaning towards the ruffly one but don't wanna wear it if it does something for my figure that I can't see. Will you help me out?

This is me on a pedestal, I'm not actually that tall (I WISH!)

This one is me at my real height, not on a pedestal.

  • I love the back on the first dress! I like the top part on the 2nd dress but not the ruffle. I would go with the 1st dress :)

  • I myself am not crazy about pickups or ruffles, but both dresses do look lovely on you. A slight personal preference for one, but I wouldn't throw something at you if you chose two. =P
  • I vote for the first one.

  • I vote Dress 1
  • I like the first one much better.  But, I am generally not a fan of pickups, so that's probably why. I think they look a little dated.

I feel the first one flatters your shape the best plus it has that lovely back accent!
  • The first one is gorgeous on you :)
  • I don't tend to love pick ups, but I love #2 on you!
  • The first dress is stunning and classic.

Personally, I think 20 years from now you'll look back less than fondly on the second one. I'm with everyone else who dislikes pickups.

  • Thanks for all the comments everyone! Just wondering quickly, for the second dress, is it simply a matter of taste on the pickups or does it do something unflattering (i.e. making me look squat). Also, if you had to switch the pick up skirt for a different kind, what would you go for? Just smooth clean lines? Thanks again, you're all great!

The neckline of dress two is very pretty, and I like the flower detail on the bodice. If you could wear a simple A-line skirt with that top, that would be gorgeous too.
  • Yes, I personally don't like the look of pickups. But I also think they make the dress look unbalanced and heavy. I think the top half of the dress is lovely, so a fit and flare skirt/almost mermaid that continues the draping all the way down the dress would be nice.

The first dress is elegant and streamlined, so I think it's a much more flattering look.

  • Haha! It DOES kinda look like whipped cream! I have to decide if I can handle that or not, haha. See, this is the great thing about comment boards. You all are not my mom or my friends, so I can count on an honest, unbiased opinion :). If anybosy knows of a similar dress, but with less whipped topping (bottoming? lol!) feel free to point me in that direction.

What's the designer? They may have another similar design in their line.

#1 all the way. Pick-ups scream teenager going to prom to me, and they make everyone look short besides. And they look like they belong on a quilt too. The first one is classic and gorgeous.

Could you do a different belt with the first? Something a little more blingy maybe on the front?  I'm more of a fan of the first...but changing up the belt might make you like it a bit more.

I think a smooth A-line, sheath or dropped waist skirt would look so much better on that second dress.  The pickups just look unbalanced against the top of the dress.    It is also a matter of taste for the pickups.  They came out heavily 7ish years ago and were ALL the rage, and when I see dresses with pickups now, they just look a little old fashioned/dated.  Even though the top of that dress does not look dated at all, the bottom makes me think "did she buy an old design?".  Again, total personal opinion... buy the dress you love.

I don't like the pickups or the flower on dress number two, but it's just personal preference there. They are both very flattering.

  • I love the shape of #2 but I'm not loving the pick ups either. I like one okay.

My dress has a similar shape without the pickups.

Oooooh that dress is gorgeous... My mother dislikes anything that could look too much like an "evening gown" instead of a wedding dress, but that particular dress might fly with both me AND her!
  • Definitely the first.  It's classic and the shape elongates your body.  The ruffles on the 2nd one cut you up and make you look shorter.
  • I think dress 1 is far better. And I think it gives you a a better shape than #2. I also think the pickups are out of style.

I agree with crazycatlady. The first dress gives a much better shape. The when I look at the second dress, it looks like it should be longer. And I don't think the pickups will look as nice as the first dress in 20 years. I vote dress 1 :)

  • number 2 even though im not a fan of ruffles
  • I cannot believe how much support this thread is getting. Thank you all so so much for your honest yet gentle opinions!! I think this has helped me clarify what I want alot...I agree with one of the above commenters that the top of dress 2 is what sold me on it. It looked so good! I don't like the look of corset backs but I LOVE the fit so I have to compromise I guess, ha ha. That first Maggie Sotero dres.... wowza...
  • I LOVE #1 on you. Looks beautiful and timeless. Not too safe at all though! I do not like pick ups either.

  • I vote #1 out of these 2 but I would do a blingy sash. Not a fan of #2 and those pickups at all, they are so dated and scream prom to me. Have you considered David Tutera dresses? Here are some similar ones:

  • I like the second dress best. I think they are both flattering but I think the second dress is just better. Congratulations!
