  • @suzie211: seriously, do that! There is plenty of things to do/see around Elk Hart Lake. We used to drive out there just for a few hours to go fishing when we had our boat, so I'd be more than willing to drive out for lunch and a few drinks!
I will hit you up then!   I'm trying to convince FI to head to the lake house at least once more this summer.  If I twist his arm, I will let you know!

  • @suzie211 - I'm jealous.  We just went down to Cancun (though it was a very, very "posh" resort...Le Blanc).  We are going to India at the end of the year to visit with H's family and to have a post-wedding reception so we figured we would save up for that.  India is fun (at least for me, since H's family is so welcoming) but, boy, those plane tickets are expensive!
  • @minskat30 I'm jealous of the India trip!  Its definitely a bucket list place for me.  I bet the tickets are crazy expensive.  I can't wait to see pics from your trip!

@minskat30: where are you going in India?  I had a bunch of friends from Kerala when I lived in Dubai, have always wanted to get there.  I've definitely swooned over some of the hotels in Udaipur too, I'm such a travel/hospitality junkie.  Sounds like an amazing trip!

  • @suzie211 - I'll try to dig up some old pictures.  We went last year in January (my first time) so I could meet H's mom for the first time.  Now THAT was nerve wracking as I heard stories about there not being a lot of love for marriages with "Westerners".  Totally not the case with H's mom...she hugged me on sight... I think she wants grandkids ;)

@notatotalbetty - H's mom lives in Noida (suburb of New Delhi) and we also have been to Agra, New Delhi and some surrounding cities.  We will probably skip Agra this time around (I just wanted to see the Taj) but maybe hit up one of the coast/beach towns if we have a chance.  I've always wanted to visit Dubai!  What was it like?

  • @minskat: that sounds great!  Taj Mahal is definitely on my bucket list.   Dubai was a bit of a crazy place, but very interesting.  I was there during the boom years when everything was fun and flashy and it seemed like everything was in growth mode, and was there for the collapse too when expats were fleeing in droves.  It was also a very perplexing place sometimes, and could easily confound my expectations (i.e. premarital sex is illegal and you could be jailed for it, but birth control is available OTC, no scrip, no age check in pharmacies and there were prostitutes lined up outside apartment buildings at night, especially in the old city Bur Dubai).  What I miss most is the access to all kinds of places from Dubai, I got to travel to eastern and southern Africa and southeast Asia easily, along with seeing some great places in the Middle East.  But for me at least, it wasn't a place to put down roots, not least because society feels very segregated by nationality/career/social class and other people interact with you and engage with you differently based on that background...which is true of the US too, it just seemed to be a bit more obvious and ingrained in the social structure there.  I did meet some wonderful people from all over the world and I still keep in touch with some of them.

So short answer: great place to stopover on the way to somewhere else, but I wouldn't recommend anyone spending two weeks there (and I was there two years).  Maybe next trip to India you and H can make a quick hop to Dubai!
  • @notatotalbetty - That is a GREAT idea...taking a hop to Dubai.  Your perpective on the city is very helpful.  The Taj was great.  It was also hilarious. I am white, have blue eyes and was blond at the time I last went so random women would come up to me, hand me their babies (first time it happened, I was stunned into silence), snap a picture, take their babies and leave.  Apparently its a "thing" to say you have a white relative and show a picture. Very odd, but India is a whole other land.

Yes please to the pics!  So cute that your MIL welcomed you right away.   Parents are really good at pushing for grandbabies:)  My mother gave FI a set of my childhood pictures last year for his birthday.  He loved it, but her ulterior motive was for him to see I was a cute kid and make him think I will make cute babies.   I saw it a mile away, and luckily FI really liked the pictures.

Do you like cottage cheese? Not by itself, but in recipes it's OK.
Do you enjoy drinking? I could honestly take it or leave it. I definitely have to be well hydrated and able to sleep in the next day, because I am a major lightweight. I probably wouldn't bother with it, but I have a few "friends" who think it is their goal in life to get me to loosen up, so sometimes I will have a beer (which BF usually ends up finishing for me) just to get them off my back.

Hell yeah! Even though technically I will be living in New Hampshire soon. But either way, MA is my home!
I will find it in my heart to forgive you for moving there. Oh, NH. I used to go to Nashua to go to the mall, and we'd pass the welcome sign that said, "Welcome to New Hampshire! Please drive respectfully." It's like they knew their audience or something.
