I promised myself after my first tattoo at 19 I'd get one and be done. I've wanted more since then, but I always thought it'd be best to refrain from the urge. Now, though, I find myself seriously wanting a second one. So tell me, Knotties, on the subject of tats:
  1. Do you have one? If so, how many?
  2. What is it?
  3. Where is it?
  4. Does it mean anything?
To answer my own questions, I have one. It's a tribal symbol and I'm tramp-stamped (I do not regret it!). It means "I'm 19 and I can get a tattoo so yay!"

Re: Let's get inked!

  • My entire right side of my back is inked. It's a representation of my children. There are vines with a hidden Batman symbol, the song I sang to them when they were infants in Italian, and a couple other trinkets. All in black. I love it. I also have some ink on my right forearm.

It is addicting but I'm very content with what I have now.

My fl is covered! At first glance he can be a little intimidating but he's a softy :)
  • I said the same thing lol, just one and done. Now 5 of them later, I still want more. They are addicting! All of mine mean something to me. I have something for one of my grandpas in the middle of my upper back, a celtic triangle on my left ankle for my other grandpa, a dolphin (my favorite animal) on my right hip, a butterfly with my two best friends on my right ankle and a miscarriage ribbon on the left side of my stomach. I want to get something for my parents but not sure what.
  • I have 4...

    1. A shooting star on my left foot (got it when I was 18 because I could)

    2. The Baltimore Orioles "O's" on my right calf (I love baseball)

    3. Angel/Devil in an ambigram on my left rib cage (inspired by the Love & Theft song Angel Eyes)

    4. A rose with a skull in it on my right shoulder. (Matching with one of my good friends)

  • I have none.  I could never think of something that meant enough to me to get done.  Ditto for DH

  • I have 9.

7 nautical stars: both wrists, behind both ears, on top of each foot and left hip; a four leaf clover on my right hip and a magpie on my right shoulder.

The stars on my wrists are aligned with my thumbs.  (The lore of the nautical star tattoo says sailors got a point aligned with the left thumb so they would always find their way home); the rest are there purely for decoration.  The clover is for my surviving a severe set of illnesses I fought my way through when I was a teen.  I was told by my doctors, "You are lucky to be alive."  The magpie is for whimsy, an eye for sparkly things and cleverness.

  • 1. Tribal on my back with strength in kanji

    2. Inside my right ankle another kanji

    3. Back of left leg right above Achilles tendon

    4. Top center of back.. symbol for twin

    5. Most recent.. the saying you are the love of my life in French on my collarbone

    I have three.
A butterfly on my ankle: I got it the day I turned 18. For freedom or wings to fly.
Love w/ a heart on the back on my neck: There are many reasons for this one & I have a lot to love in my life.
3 nautical stars  different sizes on my upper right back: stands for past, present, and future. I hope to get more added to this one soon. Maybe a quote or something.

Tattoos are addicting. Once you get 1, you want more :)
  • I have one. Its a skull with a bow that my niece drew. Its on my ankle. I love it. I want another one sooooo bad. Sorry that I cant turn it sideways.

  • I have a large tribal dragon on my left side. It starts at my waist and extends down to my thigh and wraps around to my back. I love it. Currently this is my only one but I'm getting the itch for another.
  • I have 3:

-a  (Chinese? Kanji?) symbol for courage on the left side of my lower back. While I don't regret the meaning of this one, I reeeeeeeeeeeeally wish I hadn't gotten the symbol that I got. I don't even know 100% if it means what it's supposed to mean. That's what happens when you're 17 and dumb.

-a claddagh on the inside of my right ankle. I'm Irish and I love the meaning (friendship, love, loyalty) behind it. My H gave me a claddagh ring when we were first dating.

-an infinity symbol with the word 'love' on my left wrist. I basically just liked this one and chose to get it on that wrist kind of as a nod to my H.

  • I have a few

Zodiac symbol on right ankle, later added my ex's zodiac symbol and his initials (working on an idea for a coverup)
Tramp stamp (I call it a prude stamp because it's done in the middle of my back) of blue hearts with tribal- It makes me wicked cool
    Birthstone on right hip
Cat on left ribcage (I love cats)
Chinese symbol for pride on right collarbone (I was proud of myself for going through a divorce and moving on with my life and making the best out of what I had)
Celtic Butterfly on left foot (I am Irish and went on a whim w/ H to get tattoos)
Family crest on right shoulder (I changed my name when I got married, so I wanted something that still had my family name)

Still working on ideas for my right side and those god awful initials on my ankle, but tattoos are so expensive!!

  • I had one on the back of my neck. I loved it. It was a Japanese symbol (yeah I know, real original).

I tried to join the air force and they could see the tattoo when I was in uniform so they told me that as long as it's there I wouldn't be able to get in. (The air force is picky.)

So I started the painful 1.5-year process of getting it removed. Now I have no tattoo and I didn't join the air force because in the process of getting it removed I met my ex-boyfriend and my life took a different direction.

Oh, and I find it extremely ironic that my tattoo meant "to fly," but I had to get it removed to join the air force.

  • I have three: a small Gadsden Flag (Don't Tread on Me) on my forearm, a large phoenix on my right shoulder blade, and a koi fish on my ankle. They all have personal meaning to me (my flag also mainly means I'm 19 and can get a tattoo!!!). They're all black ink only. I have a few ideas for more, but just haven't gotten around to it. My brother and I have been tossing around the idea of getting matching Mt. Rainier tattoos, which would have family significance.
  • None for me. I have always wanted one but I have never found something special enough to have on my body forever.

I love the idea on tattooing H's name or initials on my wrist. Maybe I will someday.

  • Don't have any. I would like to get one, but I can't think of anything I want that badly. My brother is starting to apprentice as a tattoo artist, so once he's no longer brand new I'm gonna see what he can come up with for me. My only ideas so far are something nautical (I like anchors) and something related to nursing since my mom and grandma are nurses and I am in nursing school.
  • I have 1 but i will be getting more. Right now i have a pisces symbol with koi fish on my back/left shoulder because...well I am a pisces. I plan on getting a harry potter quote somewhere, the word "bing" in script letters and a white outline with back shading lotus.

  • I have one, it's a honey bee on the inside of my forearm.  It's black and grey, but I've thought about getting some color added around it, like flowers or something, I don't know.  I just love bees, I think they are super important, and hopefully will have some hives of my own someday.  I also have a few others- bike gears on my ankle, a Japanese style panther head, script that says "ride fast, take chances".  Those are all from Alley Cat bicycle races that I did.  (one of the stops in these races is almost always a tattoo shop, get tattooed and you get time taken off your final time)

My next tattoo is going to be one of the giant Ohm insects from the Miyazaki film Nausicaa

I also have this bad ass illustration of Tiger Lily from a childhood book that I really want.  She's standing over a dead pirate with a knife in hand and bearing her teeth.  To me it speaks volumes towards my feminist side, but I also feel like a fairly stereotypical depiction of an "Indian" is inappropriate too, even if it is a character from literature.

I have one on my left shoulder blade on my back. Its a white rabbit with a red eye. Its realistic looking. I got it when I was 16. My dad took me, it was my birthday present. His best friend tattooed me. I regretted it when I was in my early 20's. But now I don't. My dad passed away and every time I see it I'm reminded of him and the memory of that day. In really happy I got it.
  • I have 3.

A blue rose on my left hip.  I got that one just because I wanted a tattoo, but if I decided I didn't like it, I didn't have to SEE it all the time.  I'd like to get it touched up and changed to purple.

My second is a unicorn with a rose clenched in it's teeth with some special symbols added to it which have meaning to me on my inner left ankle.

My third one is a 3 leaf celtic-style clover on my right ass cheek.  One, I'm Irish.  Two, when people piss me off, I tell them to "Kiss my lucky charm!"  Three, I never get pinched on St. Patrick's Day, because I'm always wearing green.  :)

    I want another one.

Not sure if anyone's read Jacqueline Carey's "Kushiel" series, but I want a marque from House Valerian as a backpiece.  FI doesn't want me to have an entire back piece.  :(  I'm still working on him though!!

  • I have a butterfly on my shoulder because I was 18 when I got it and I didn't know better.

I have an anklet of nautical stars around my left ankle.

My brother drew a blue rose coming of of flames that's on my lower right leg.

I have the Chinese character for "serenity" on my inner right ankle although it probably means soup. But that's ok because I like soup.

Here's mine. It's butterflies b/c my mom loved butterflies and always planned to get a butterfly tattoo, but she never did. So I got one for her.

The colors are much bolder in person. My camera sucks.

FI and I are the same way.  Even when I was a tween and my friends and I got henna tattoos I was always sick of mine within a few days.
Don't worry guys, I have the Wedding Police AND the Whambulance on speed dial!
    1. Do you have one? If so, how many?  I have three
    2. What is it?
    3. Where is it?  I have a horse on the inside of my left ankle, a braid around my right ankle, and the Tibetan symbol for OM at the base of my spine.
    4. Does it mean anything? I rode hunter jumpers competitively my whole life, until two years ago. The braid doesn't mean anything and I'm going to get it changed to a black belt after I earn mine in taekwondo in about two more years.  The OM has religious/spiritual meaning, right down to the reason for it's placement that I can't really explain in a short answer.

I'm with smalfrie here. That's a little much to be saying what you can and can't do with your body. Kind of reminds me of my ex. He didn't like tattoos and forbade me to get one while we were dating. He also didn't like when I put my hair up and would get mad if I threw it into a ponytail for my convenience and comfort. We didn't last long because it's my body to do with what I want.
Meh, I think it might be a *leetle* bit of a jump to assume that her FI is a controlling ass like your ex was.

As a non-tattoed person, I kind of empathize with her FI. I have nothing against them at all and you all have posted some gorgeous tattoos! But we all have preferences in aesthetics, and I wouldn't be too thrilled if my FI wanted an entire backpiece either.

That said, if it were really important to him, I'd tell him to knock himself out and I certainly wouldn't throw a fit or give him an ultimatum or anything like that. Would it be my personal preference? No. Would I prefer he didn't do it? Yes. Would I tell him that? Yes. Would I support his decision if he decided to go ahead and get one? Yes.

And while FI and are both agree we're free to do with our bodies as we please, we're also honest about what we like and don't like visually. For example, I have a pair of heavy framed glasses that I adore and FI hates. He is very open about the fact that he prefers my other glasses, and I appreciate his input. He wouldn't try to dictate what I wear however, and limits his input to an Austin Power joke now and then. I understand that more meaning goes into choosing a tattoo than goes into picking glasses, however.

I hope shaylagirl's FI is simply expressing a preference instead of "forbidding" anything, but will come around and support her decision in the end.

  • I was thinking the same thing @OjitosVerdes. Having your fls likes and dislikes in mind doesn't necessarily mean he is controlling.
For example I have very long hair and at times It's annoying and I'd like to chop it all off. I know my fl loves my long hair so I'm not going to do that. However, if I did chop it It's not like he would leave me or even be mad!

    That's super cute!
  • Thank you @elizabetheleven! I am thinking about getting a Nightmare before xmas tattoo on the other ankle. I kind of want the fence that is around Halloweentown around the whole ankle.
