Dress questions

This may be a stupid question, but everything says that you shouldn't schedule a fitting until 6 weeks out. Does the dress stay at the shop until then or do you pick it up? When you pick it up, I'm guessing you try it on to make sure it's a good size, right?

Re: Dress questions

  • I'm different because my shop doesn't have a seamstress, so I picked my dress up and I have it.  They have a recommended one to go to, but I will be going elsewhere due to them being stupid and I want nothing more than to run away from them :)  Normally, people say it's safer for it to stay at the bridal salon because if anything happens, it's on them.

  • I think it depends.  I bought my dress a place almost 3 hours from my house.  I knew I wouldn't use their seamstress so FMIL brought the dress to me when it came in.  I've had to keep it at the house.  I would think if you bought it from a larger store they would store it for you.
  • But it is wise to at least go in and try it on, right? I'm a little paranoid about the size and I recently had a friend tell me a horror story about how her dress came in and was too small even though she'd tried the same exact dress on 3 different places in that size. Yikes D:
  • I am keeping my dress at the bridal shop until my final fitting just before I leave. When it came in two months ago I did go and try it on and check it out. I wanted to figure how much it would need to be altered, make sure it was the right dress/right color, and check and see if my hairpiece went with it as well as I thought it would. I don't think you need to go try it on, but it made me feel better too!!
  • Ironically, I just got my dress in today and my wedding is just under 5 months away.  I got a dress that I know is too big - so it will have to be altered.  I am going to go in for an initial fitting (just to get the major changes done) within the next week or two, and have my final fitting 3-4 weeks before my wedding.  I also do not trust this place to keep my dress for 4 months, they are a pretty huge place and if they misplace it I would dieeee, so I am going to get it to keep at my house until the final fitting.

<div>I think I'll do that. I've learned through this process that anything that makes you feel better/less stressed is worth it! It'll also be nice to bring FI's shirt to see if it matches the colored sash on my dress. If it doesn't, I could always buy him a new shirt :P</div>
  • My dress has been at the shop for almost a year now!  It came in the beginning of last May and I am having my first fitting on May 5th - but this is only because I insisted, they wanted me to wait until late May but with all the alterations I need I will feel better if we get started a little earlier than usual.  So yes, my bridal shop alterations lady adviced 4-6 weeks before the wedding.

  • I got my dress from Davids Bridal, and they won't hold the dresses for you from my understanding...but I would have picked it up even if they would have.  I've had bad issues with some places and dresses and I wanted that baby in MY hands.  It is sitting in my coat closet and has been there since September.  We move into a house this summer and it will be moved into another closet immediately!

  • my shop suggested we start alterations 6 weeks before wedding.    my second fitting is friday, and they've had my dress.   they'll keep it until im ready to go.   truthfully, we leave on a sunday, and the previous friday will prob be spent in NY picking up my dress and having my ering polished.

<div>I'm pretty sure this is what I'll do too. We don't have pets that roam (just a gecko who lives in her tank <3) and we don't smoke so I'm not very concerned about anything happening to it at home in our closet.</div><div>
Congratulations on buying a house! How exciting :D</div>

Same deal for me, in my closet with my veil and all my other stuff FI shouldn't see, haha.  It's safe unless there is a fire or someone breaks in and steals it.  I would def go in and try it on, make sure it's the right size, beading is correct, if there are any issues, they need to get taken care of now instead of waiting.
  • I had to bring mine home, but it wasn't a problem because I just put it in the guest room closet in a breathable bag.  I won't lie... I also looked at it from time to time.   Now that it's off for alterations it feels weird NOT to see it in the closet. I want it back. =)
