NWR: I haven't had caffeine at all today!

I'm kind of proud of myself.

I didn't have any on Sunday as I wasn't feeling well, and had a small cup of tea yesterday. Nothing today. I tried to kick my addiction a few months ago and did really well, but fell off the wagon after a few nights of poor-sleep.

I'm sure I'll hit a brick wall after lunch and want to die, but as of right now, I'm doing fantastic!

ALSO: How is your week going so far?

Haha. I just started a bottle of Coke Zero, and I don't regret it. Love that junk.

This week is kind of eh so far. I have my first med-surg exam tomorrow and I'm starting to get burnt out from studying for it. I have reviewed everything, FINALLY, so now to take some practice tests and figure out what I'm still confused on. I think I'm doing pretty well, but we shall see tomorrow, I suppose.

Why are you trying to quit caffeine? Just curious. ETA: and, okay, maybe seeking motivation of my own. :)
  • Great job @queenofhearts1728 - I used to really be addicted to caffeine (had to have two to three cups a day) but then it started to get me sick so I quit.

This week has been great thus far though I realize I need to get serious about my workout/diet.  I'm gaining weight, my clothes don't fit and I need to reverse the last 4-5 months of bad behavior.  I got a kick-ass workout in today at least but I'm still depressed that it will likely take me twice that amount of time to get back to where I need to be. Ugh!

  • I'm trying to watch my sugar. I just watched a really good video about sugar addiction and realized, crap that's me. To the drawing board!

Not trying to quit necessary. I LOVELOVELOVE my coffee. And I've been cheating on my coffee with tea lately. Like a lot. I also have the occasional energy drink when I feel like absolute death in the mornings.  But I do have a few reasons:

    • I just don't want to depend on it so much. Usually, If I don't have caffeine by 10am or so, I feel exhausted. Some days I can make it until noon and then I kind of become a narcoleptic. lol
    • I also have huge bags under my eyes every morning that don't go away until I'm sufficiently caffeinated, and sometimes not even then because I don't get enough water either.
    • Speaking of water, I used to ONLY drink water. Coffee was a treat for me that I would have maybe once or twice a week. Energy drinks were reserved for migraines when I didn't want to use an expensive migraine medication until absolutely necessary. Then I moved to CO and the elevation made me tired, and it all went downhill from there.
Tea actually helps a lot to ease myself off. I don't want to quite cold-turkey because i've seen how miserable that is. Tea typically has less caffeine (although some teas have equivalent) than coffee and you don't have the crash... you basically plateau with tea.

My goal is to basically get back to the "treat" of having coffee/caffeine.  I just don't want to NEED it lol

  • @minskat30 It's hard to get back on track for sure. Don't be depressed. If you work hard, you can do it fairly quickly.  Plus, you'll just feel a million times better. That's what I keep telling myself to stay motivated anyway ;)

@Kait good for you!! I'm trying to watch my sugar-intake too.  I did this 5 day clean eating detox (only lasted 3 days cause I'm weak) and drank green tea with lemon instead of coffee for those days. Even though it was only a few days, when I tried to go back to my normal drinks, the taste of sugar was SO strong. I couldn't handle it.  I use a lot less sugar than I used to now because of that.
  • @queenofhearts1728, you are my hero! Haha, I'm terrified of going caffeine-free. I am not a coffee drinker at all, but I love my Coke Zero. The last time I tried to stop drinking soda I basically had a two-week long headache. So I'm scared to do that again even though I know that would be better for me in the long-run.
  • I used to drink 1 coffee a day and then decided to switch to green tea completely. I drink a ton of water. I had coffee on Saturday for the first time in ages, though, and I had another today. I love the taste of coffee.

How was the green tea? I sometimes will drink Chai but I know that's not great for me either.

  • Amapola14 that's why I went to tea! I used to have migraines and chronic daily headaches, and I don't want those to come back ever. And I don't want to re-live them through caffeine withdrawal lol
@Swazzle i love the taste of coffee too. I don't think I could ever give it up completely. It's my first true-love.  Also, everyone in my family is coffee obsessed (on both sides). I'm fairly certain it's in my genes.
@Kait I think green tea took some getting used to. At first, it tasted so watery, but I read that sometimes that happens because it's a much softer taste than coffee or other drinks, so your palette has to become accustomed to it.  You can always double-up teabags, but I didn't want to do that.  I really like it with lemon though.. I think it brings out the taste of the tea really well. at first, I'd add a tiny amount of sugar to sweeten it, but for the detox thing I stopped that. I know a lot of people who use honey to sweeten, but I've never been a fan of the combination.   I liked the Yogi tea bags and they have fun inspirational quotes on the strings :) I LOVE the blueberry green tea from them also. It's my favorite for flavored green teas.  I also do some Teavana or other tea shops so experiment and try new flavors/types of teas.
  • @Kait oh and I love chai tea! i actually have a cup of it just now, but decaf. :) I kind of think I might have just tricked my brain into thinking I had caffeine?
  • @queenofhearts1728, I am gonna be real, tea tastes horrible to me most of the time, unless I add a ton of sugar. Do you have any recommendations? I would love to decrease how much soda I drink, but I don't need two weeks of not functioning in the middle of this semester.
  • @amapola14 If I had to pick coffee or tea to drink black, I would pick coffee. I hate the taste of tea unless it's pretty sugar-ed up.

I keep myself to one coffee a day (for financial reasons), and I usually have coffee 3-5 days a week. I'm in grad school, so it's hard to kick the habit completely, but it's easier on my wallet if I don't have it every day. And it keeps the caffeine more effective.

I don't worry too much about my sugar intake with regards to coffee ... because I pretty much just dump Splenda in it.

  • I'm with you @amapola14 - Tea tastes terrible to me.  H makes Masala chai on the weekends and that sometimes tastes ok to me but it has a fair amount of sugar and milk added in, among other things.

^^^^ That store honestly is what got me into drinking tea. I did the green tea thing for the detox and enjoyed it once I got used to it, but Teavana has EVER-Y-THING.  There even mix teas for different flavors and you can get caffeinated and non-caffeinated and that place is dangerous. They have green, white, and black teas; although personally I prefer green or white. Black is a lot stronger, so I typically stay away from it (though I've had a few that were tastey.)  On a scale of strongness it goes: White, Green, Black.

It's a little pricey, but the tea tends to last me a long time. If you have a shop near you, they do free samples of 2-5 different types of teas per day. If you buy online, they send you samples of various flavors also.  Other than that, I'd just recommend stopping into a tea shop to try out some flavors. Most places will do samples also.

If you want to try bagged tea, my favorite brands are Yogi and Tazo. I'm also ADDICTED to: http://www.amazon.com/English-Tea-Store-Hawaiian-Flavored/dp/B00AYWHH32/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379438305&sr=8-1&keywords=hawaiian+colada+tea  I tried it at this High Tea event thing that a friend did for her birthday, and I'm obsessed. I drink it almost every day.

Also sorry for rambling. I get excited about tea now.

  • @queenofhearts1728, actually, there is a Teavana right near me! A friend and I even had some samples the other day, and there was one kind of citrus-y one that wasn't half-bad (can't remember what it was, sadness). Haha, I will have to work that into the budget soon.
  • Serious caffeine sensitivity that leads to migraines led to me quitting caffeine when I was 13. All I miss is Dr. Pepper. They even caffeinate the Dr. Pepper jelly beans. That's just not right.
  • I usually set a splurge-budget for my tea. A coworker and I actually split our teas at first, and still do occasionally. We'll go in together on 2-4oz of various teas, split the cost evenly, and share them all. We usually end up having ones we like most, and will drink more of that. So far, her favorites have been stuff I'm not that fond of or just not in the mood to drink, so I don't mind her having most, if not all, so it's worked out really well.

There are some teas we buy for ourselves for non-sharing purposes and others we split so the cost isn't so high. We usually spend around $60 per person, which isn't that bad considering how much tea we get. It lasted us 3-4 months before we restocked.

    What?! That's just ridiculous.

    and welcome to the club.
  • Hi! I'm also a caffeine addict.

Ok guys...a better place to get your tea from than Teavana is Adagio. I'm not aware of them having physical locations BUT they have a wide variety of everything...with different price points to suit your budget. BF and I like to buy our green teas from that site because we feel bad bumming off of our friends when they bring back super high quality green tea from their trips to China. Anyway, it's a fun site to click around on. They have bagged and loose leaf teas, interesting blends, accessories...all sorts of stuff.

I used to be the kind of person who dumped sugar and milk and creamer into her coffee and tea too. Now that I can afford to buy better quality stuff it's easier to enjoy the pure flavor of black coffee or tea cause it doesn't taste like crap like the cheap stuff does. I guess it's one of the few things I actually splurge on.
