Wedding Party

Wedding Party Colors? Can they be different for bridesmaids and groomsmen?

I went shopping with my fi yesterday for tuxedos for him and the groomsmen. We had been planning the Grape colored dress below for the bm's and a similarly hued blue (royal blue?) for the boys. Our colors are grape, royal blue and fuchsia. The bm's were going to have fuchsia bouquets. Mine would be all three colors. However, at Men's wearhouse the woman who helped us was adamantly trying to convince us that having 2 colors is a bad idea because the two sides won't "marry" in the pictures. I know its my wedding so my choice, but now she has me worried. Is this going to look bad?

  • To be honest, I think a classic black tux/suit always looks elegant and goes with anything.  And I'm not really a fan of Royal Blue tuxes.  I think Purple dresses and Royal blue tuxes would be pretty busy IMO.

I'd rather see the men in black, and then incorporate the color with a  pocket square or tie instead.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • Oh, sorry. Guess I should have clarified. Def not blue tuxes. It would be royal blue vests/ties.

  • I'm having a similar problem.  My colors are pale blue and gold, and FI is hesitant to put the guys in blue.

Can you incorporate the colors using their boutineres?  My girls will have gold-tone flowers, and if we can't get the guys in blue, we'll probably put it in their bouts.

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.
  • What about a neutral tux but colors in the flowers?
  • No one has to marry at your wedding except you and FI. If you think it looks ok, which you probably do since you are using both colors in your color scheme, then go for it. Just because she works at a tux shop doesn't make that lady's opinion any more important than yours.

  • It's totally your call. Colors are something that won't hurt anyone (I mean, a truly awful combo might look icky in photos, but it still won't hurt or offend someone like some other wedding faux pas might), so the choice is yours and you don't really need to listen to someone else's advice if you and FI are totally happy with your decision.

I'm guessing that that lovely pic in your post is the BM dress, so maybe get FI or a groomsman to model your desired tux ensemble, put the two photos together and make a comparison.

Another option could be a black vest with a blue tie, or a purple tie. That will still be fairly neutral overall but it still adds the little pop of color.

  • I think it'll look just fine. Different, yes, but that's probably what you're going for in the first place. Tell the woman "oh I know, but I think having the same color is so boring and old school, don't you?" and hope she gets the message to shut up if she wants to earn your business.

    PS. Cute BM dress!
  • Thanks everyone. That was the vote of confidence I needed. mbcdefg I like your idea about putting the two next to eachother. And thanks Emily, I will not be giving them my business at this point anyway - I wasn't any happier with their selection than her attitude.

  • If it's just vests and/or ties, I really don't see why you can't do both. Purples and blues blend nicely together. A blue tux I would have said "nay-nay" to, though, lol.

I'm wondering (Just a thought) what it would look like if you dressed them the way you wanted (Girls in Grape, boys in the blue vest/tie/whatever), what if the girls had blue flowers and the boys had purple in their boutineires? I'm just thinking that might "pull it all together".

Just a thought, you can totally ignore it if you hate it, lol. I think what you have in mind sounds fine.

  • Thanks Meg, I do actually like that idea. I had been thinking puple boutineires but blue bouquets sounds good too. Hydrangeas are our flowers so it could work out perfectly.
