Engagement Photos Question

Hello all!

I just got engaged and I'm unsure of how this whole engagement photo thing should work.  We are going to have a pretty long engagement because I'm still a student and want to finish school first.  Are we supposed to do the engagement photos right away?  In the middle?  Closer to the wedding (mid 2016)?

This also leads me to have further questions about the season of our engagement photos...  We got engaged this Fall so does that mean I should have Fall scenery in my engagement photos?  I really have no clue how this works...  I haven't been involved in planning anyone's wedding before.

Please offer any advice/suggestions you can.  I'd really appreciate the help!!  Thank you!   - Kim

Re: Engagement Photos Question

  • You can do them whenever you'd like.   Since we are not doing save the dates I am in no rush  and we probably wont have them done til just before our wedding.  we just don't have time right now and with the weather getting colder I would prefer to wait til spring.   our wedding is end of may.   Our photographer includes a free engagement shoot with our package, so I would definitely suggest determining and hiring your wedding photographer before paying someone else for engagement photos.

You can do whatever you want!

The engagement session is nice (we just did ours yesterday) because it gets you both comfortable in front of the camera.

FI proposed in June, our pictures were in October and we are getting married in January.  I wanted to wait until fall for our engagement pictures because fall is my favorite time of year...

  • We are doing our engagement photos tomorrow, but have been engaged for almost 2 years. We decided to wait on the photos for a variety of reasons, but we knew we wanted an opportunity to get in front of the camera with our photog before the wedding.

  • That is all completely up to you.... anytime you want to do them, do them!  But like people mentioned above, I would suggest first finding your photographer for the wedding first.  It gets you more comfy in front of both the camera, with your FI, and with your photographer too.  My photographer is a good friend of mine and I still felt a little weird during my engagement pics until about 20 minutes in... then it was all good times and fun!!

I got engaged in May..... just did my engagement pics yesterday... and wedding is in March!

  • I think you should do engagement photos right away.
  • I got married in July and my photog package came with an e-pics session included - I still haven't done them. Do them whenever you want. It's just a photoshoot, do it when you need or want the pictures or based on the season/location. There is no set time :) GL!

  • I'd say when a while because your wedding photography package may include an engagement session and you probably can't hire a wedding photographer yet because your date isn't confirmed. It could also be a good "test run" to make sure you like your wedding photographer.

For our wedding photographer, for example, the engagement session is included in all her packages and cannot be opted out of (she says it improves the quality of wedding pictures because it gives her the opportunity to get to know us).
