Fearing a visit from Aunt Flo...

You all know the dreaded visit I'm talking about.  Ahh, womanhood!   (If this is too weird or TMI for you, I apologize!  Please stop reading here.)

Now, we've picked our wedding date, so there's that.  It's not until September 2014, but I don't have a typical "28-day" cycle.  I'm not saying it's irregular - it's not; it's been doing this from the very beginning.  Mine is normally 32-35 days between periods, so that means I can't really predict my period to the date.  It bumps it over every time, so I have less than 12 periods a year.
TL;DR - I have no idea if my period will be before / on / after my wedding day.

I'm not a birth control user, and I am strongly opposed to it (for myself) - are there any natural ways that I can delay or induce my period, if it happens to inauspiciously fall on my day of bliss?!

  • Do you have issues with your period on a normal day to day basis?  If not, then having it on your wedding day is really a non-issue.  My friend had her period on her wedding day and went about her business just like any other time she had her period.  The only difference was when going to change out her tampon her sister helped hold her dress up and handed her a fresh tampon.

Unless you are a person who suffers from horrible debilitating cramps, super heavy flow or something else that causes major issues then I don't see the issue. And if you do suffer from some of those things that make getting out of bed or the house and issue then you should really go and see your doctor.

  • Nope, it's heavy flow (on the first day) and cramps sent from Satan himself.  It's always been that way, and gyno says that's my "normal".
I just don't want to be worrying about that my entire wedding day!

Well there really is no way to post-pone or bring on your period early unless you use a form of birth control.

But if you know that your period comes every 32-35 days and it is pretty regular like that then you should be able to plan around it pretty easy.  Like, (as an example) if you get your period on September 1st then don't plan your wedding for October 5th.  Plan it for the 12th instead.

  • I guess I will just have to calculate what day it falls on (come July / August) and go from there.  A period would be more easily changed than the whole celebration!

  • Truth.  It's all already picked & scheduled & all that, so dealing with the period is the last thing on the list.  Thanks for the advice!

  • It will all be good.  Period or no, you will be too much on cloud nine that day to really even notice nor care whether or not you have your period.

I can relate, OP. Mine is terrible (pass out at the altar terrible some months), and I don't think it's an unreasonable concern. I calculated mine out when picking dates, but mine is also slightly irregular and tends to "shift" over the course of a year, so it's impossible to predict for sure. Hormonal birth control just doesn't work for everybody.

Do what you can to keep your blood sugar and hormones under control. Stock up on the emergency pills for cramps and migraine, drink a lot of water, and focus on stress control as much as you can--the mire stressed out you get, the worse it'll be and the weirder your body gets. And maybe check in with your gyno or a naturopath.

ETA: I would talk to your doc about this, but personally, my hormones freak out when I'm trying hard to lose weight. If you have a pre-wedding get in shape plan, maybe see about adjusting it so the last 4-6 weeks focus on easing into a maintenance mode instead of last-minute crash dieting. It might help.
  • I had my period on my wedding day, and I get really bad cramps. It also exacerbates my fibromyalgia, so I'm in terrible pain. I just made sure to relax when I could, stocked up on Midol, and put up with it. It actually wasn't so bad, I think because I was so giddy.
  • hi there is a site (search google for menstural calculator)   you put in time of last period and then the month and year for when you wanna know.. it will ask days of your cycle and then it will tell you when you get it no matter what year
Sweet! IDK how accurate it is, but it is telling me my visitor won't come until two weeks after my wedding!
  • Oh no! I didn't even think about this. You are all wedding geniuses. Emergency calculation about to happen.

  • There is also an app for your smart phone called Period Tracker. I use it just to keep track, but if you use it every month it calculates how many days between and how long and everything else so after a few months you will have a pretty good idea of whether you will have to worry about it or not. You can look more than a year in the future to see when you will start once it has a few months to get your average.

  • Wish mine could be calculated that way -- I never know if it will be two weeks or two months, anything in between :(
    @marzipan good luck :)
  • I use a the Fertility Friend app. I know it's generally used to monitoring your fertile days, but as of now I'm just using it to keep track of my periods. I'm usually a 30- to 32-day cycle, and I can currently look out a year from now for my wedding date and see that, assuming nothing wonky happens with my cycle by then, I'm in the clear. You could look into getting something like that.

  • You are all such a darling, helpful bunch of ladies!!  Thank you for the ideas / encouragement, etc!

The whole idea of having a period on my big day is such a nightmare to me... feeling (and looking) like a giant, sweaty, smelly, crampy, angry whale is the last thing I want to happen!!  I will check out all of these options! :)

  • OMG i totally agree! i have been on and off birth control for past 15 years.  I just started again because i have been perfectly regular and dont want to mess with it.  I am also getting married next September... (the 27 th :)!) and as of now.. i know it's a year away but.... i will have it 10 days prior meaning no wedding day and no honeymoon! as ridiculous as it sounds im glad others feel the same way!!! totally dont want the stress of that on the best day ever :)!
  • why are you strongly opposed to birth control? Oh is it a religious thing?

I think the pill is the only way to stop it, or pregnancy.
  • I use the nuvaring...my period comes like clockwork. I have planned entire vacations around it LOL sorry that isn't any help to you.

I can't help you with the cramps and such but have you looked into Instead? Its a cup that you insert that "catches" everything and you can leave it in for up to 12 hours. I used to have a heavy flow and used this while in Iraq because I knew getting to a restroom every few hours is almost impossible.

@marshmallow1982 - For personal health reasons and religious reasons, both my FI and I are opposed to birth control.

I have naturally induced my period before with parsley tea, but I wonder how far before your forecasted 1st day that will work?  Have any of you girls tried this before as well?

@Doesntplaynice82- Yes, I actually just bought a pack of them!  I still have yet to have my next period to use them, but I think they are a great idea.  At first, I wasn't so sure (sometimes I'm still not! haha!), but I think they are definitely worth a shot.

  • Ha, I wish I could be that calm about it.  White dress + blood doesn't really sit well with me...

Mine is the same way.  I've had anywhere from 2 weeks up to 6 months between periods before.  And I've had them last 3 days or 2 weeks when I do get them.  Impossible to predict... but my legs start cramping up a day or two prior so at least I have some warning before it starts.  Been like that since I was a teenager.  Certain types of birth control do work great to regulate them for me, so I do plan get on something so I can make sure to avoid it on my wedding & honeymoon.  Not sure of any natural remedies to ways to control timing though.

  • As an update (?), I'm trying the Softcups now!  They are working pretty well, although I don't think I have the hang of using them 100% correctly, but that'll take some practice.  So far so good though - I have high hopes for them as I learn how to use them better!

I like the Diva Cup. Same concept as Softcups but re-usable.

  • Softcups come in a reusable variety, too!  Those are the ones I am using.  I like them, I will keep trying them.

  • I actually used the Period Tracker App on my phone to set my wedding date. We are getting married in Jamaica and will be there for seven days so I definitely do not want to deal with that on my week.

  • @WishesComeTrue5  Ugh, for sure.  Three days after our wedding, we're going to Germany for a week.  I don't think I can avoid it for those 2 weeks, but we'll see.  I'd rather deal with it then than on my wedding day!!

    Pregnancy, brilliant!!
  • @Mitch617  Yeah seriously, that's what I was thinking.  Obviously that delays periods, and obviously I'm not going to be using that method...
