registering same items

FI and I have been having fun playing with registries. We know a lot can change by the time our actual wedding rolls around. We're doing Macy's, Kohl's and BBB. There are some items that are the same at all of them. Is it bad form if we register for the same items at different places? Prices are different as well, plus sales, coupons etc. I plan to keep up to date on our registry during the whole process so was thinking as the item got bought off the registry, I can take it off the other one(s). The reason I ask is BBB really has a bunch of everything I like, but not everyone shops at BBB especially my side of the family since we don't have one near by, but the prices are cheaper than Macy's who sells the same products as BBB.

Re: registering same items

  • Don't register for two of something unless you want two.

We split our registries up by categories to avoid duplicates.

Macys: Linens, Towels, Luggage, Fiestaware, Crystal

BBB: Kitchen gadgets and small appliances, entertaining and serving pieces, storage pieces

Crate and Barrel: Glassware and home decor
  • Yeah, don't register for two unless you don't want two, just pick different types of items on each registry. You might be surprised where people shop. I was for sure that people would love amazon, but more people went with Target.
  • Ditto PPs -- don't double register. People will cross-shop. We registered for Pyrex at Target and got a lot of it with BBB gift receipts because people had found a sale there and/or used a coupon.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • I agree with PP. We registered for MIkasa China and got most of it from Mikasa and not from Macy's. If you can't find something you like at all the stores, then maybe just do 2 registries.
  • Thanks for your inputs. Maybe what I'll do is put the repeated items on my "wish list" which only I can see and then see what people buy from the most. If it looks like BBB I'll re-arrange the lists to add more stuff there and not from macy's

  • I disagree. I double registered and then updated my registry as this were purchased or received. I only received 3 of the same thing (other than china). Having them at both places increased the likelihood of getting them and I had no problem exchanging things and Macy's and BBB.

I definitely recommend double registering for any larger ticket items - like china, pots & pans, knives, anything over $100. I didn't double register for smaller items.

I pull all the possible registries and decide what I want to get the couple. If it's cheaper or I have a coupon at Macy's I'm going to go get it there even if it is only on the BBB registry. I think Macy's is cheaper when things go on sale. I watch for sales and use coupons. China at Macy's my regularly be $130 and $90 at BBB, but it will never go on sale at BBB. At Macy's it will go 40%-50% off and then I can use an additional 20% off and get free shipping with my rewards card. So a cheaper MSRP isn't always the best way to look at it.
    GL! =)

  • Thanks for your input @photokitty. I'm definitely going to leave our cookware double registered. Our silverware we live can only be found at BBB and same with our plates can only be found at Macy's. Oh we make life hard! I shop the same way you do. I look for every possible saving. I'm not a Macy's card holder though (might have to change that due to perks with registry), but my mom has Kohl's and always gets 30% off there and kohl's cash. BBB always does 20% off of one item which is why I also like them. So depending on the sale, one may be cheaper than the other

I hear ya! I always want the best deal. I was a registry stalker and if something came off one I would call customer service and have it marked as purchased on the other registry. I'm pretty anal and detail orientated so it worked for me.
I think the Macy's card is worth getting for the perks - especially if you register for fine china there. You can always cancel it after or keep a zero balance. I pretty much only use mine during Xmas and "Thanks For Sharing." Saved mare than $2K on last year Black Friday on suits and hubs tux for the wedding - cheaper than renting!

  • The issue with double registering is very relevant if you're having a shower. Gifts are opened at the shower, and it can be embarassing to your guests if they bought you a duplicate.

Gah! I'm a black friday ADDICT! I just never really shopped at Macy's... FI gets his tux for free so no worries there but def a good idea :) I have it now where I only have the cookware doubled listed..Macy's is more, but like I said, none of my family shops at BBB. The other stuff I added to the sites "wish list" that way if people are buying more off of one and not the other I'll rotate them around. BTW I love that Macy's does buy one place setting get one free sales. I got my friend 2 fiesta place settings off of that sale.

This is true, but as I said I was a registry stalker and if something came off one I would call customer service and have it marked as purchased on the other registry. I'm pretty anal and detail orientated so it worked for me. If you don't look at your registry daily this may not be the best for you. I had 3 showers (for my first marriage), I have a HUGE family, and never had a duplicate at the same shower. One of the duplicates came at the wedding, so I'm pretty certain that based on it's price point someone bought it even though it had been fulfilled. When I was younger and couldn't afford to spend a ton I did that once - bought something already purchased bc I couldn't afford anything that was unpurchased. I included the gift receipt so they could return it - in my early 20's I refused to give cash under any circumstance.

ETA - and like I said I think its more relevant on larger ticket items, which you aren't as likely to get at a shower - at least in my circle. I didn't get a lot of $100 gifts, mostly under $50 at the shower.

I'm having two showers, one for my family and friends and one for his family and my college friends (who still live in my college town area) His family all lives 2-3 hours away from my home town and his mom doesn't think they would travel down. I also refuse to give cash for wedding gifts. I always do boxed gifts both shower and wedding. Though, I guess I'm not oppose to doing a gift card for places they registered either

This.  As a guest, I will check out all the registries before I shop.  If I notice something on multiple registries, I don't buy it for fear of the above situation.
