Which would you prefer? (Favors)

For favors, which one would you like best?

1. Bottle of red wine

2. Small bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar (would be packaged in one box)

3. Neither option, I would leave them behind.

Thanks for the input! We really want to do favors, but we want to choose something that will actually be taken/appreciated by guests.

The oil & vinegar for me. I hate red wine, although if it was the only thing available I'd probably take it and find something to cook with it. Chocolate is my preferred favor, though. My mom would take neither.

Wow. Expensive favors. I might take the wine if it was something I hadn't tried before. I'm not a big fan of balsamic vinegar.

My first choice would be neither. My second choice would be the olive oil, I'd only take the vinegar because they were in the same box.

I'd take the oil and vinegar. It makes everything taste better, and has less limitations than red wine.

My first choice would be red wine, depending on the kind. I hate cabernet, but that seems to always be an option at weddings. You really don't need favors, so I would recommend to do neither, because whichever option you pick, someone will be disappointed.

I'd take the wine. But realize that not everyone likes red wine. Yes, you can't please everyone with anything, but wine in particular is very personal.

Actually, I would be fine with any option, as I cook with olive oil and use balsamic vinegar on salads and such, but as you see from above these two are also not widely received. My FI for example, does not like balsamic vinegar at all (I flavour my own salad with it separately).

You might do better with something like chocolates/truffles or chocolate covered nuts (at least if one guest doesn't like them/ can't eat them, they likely know of a few people they could give the chocolate to).

You could also consider having your favours out on a table and offering the choice of both red and white wine, but be prepared that more people might choose white leaving a bunch of red behind that other guests don't want.

Not true. There is no balsamic vinegar in this house and never has been in any house I have lived in. WE have a small bottle of apple cider vinegar that is probably at least a year old and been used once or twice and a jug of white vinegar that is used for cleaning.

Personally, I'd be more excited by the wine. However, wine may be uncomfortable for folks in recovery & inappropriate for folks under 21. Check to ensure your or the venue's liability insurance/polices allows giving alcohol.

Olive oil & balsamic vinegar could be given to a soup kitchen, regardless of if folks want to use it.

I'm allergic to nuts, so I hate chocolate favors. Way too risky.

I love all of those options! But, I know many people who don't drink red wine and many people who don't cook (I know you don't need to "cook" to enjoy the O&V as a salad dressing or to dip bread in, but....).

If I were you I would just spend the money on a few fancy truffles in a pretty box for each guest, that would be more universally loved and would probably save you $.

Again, if you are talking about a full bottle of wine, I probably would not take it... I'm not generally a red wine person so unless it was something I'd really want to try. I'd personally prefer the oil and vinegar. I also really like the chocolate idea. The challenge for favors is that you are obligated to have at least one per household and you are likely to have a lot of leftovers because you just never know. Obviously you need to be able to afford what that cost is but also pick something that you like and could reasonably use up or give to friends / family post wedding.

Oil & vinegar would be my first choice. I don't drink red wine, but I would cook with it. I know alot of people who dislike red wine. Honestly, whatever you do for a favor isn't going to please everyone (even chocolate).

First off, you can't please everyone. I think chocolate favors are nice, but I feel like everyone does them (nothing wrong with that, though!). I would love either favor, but, thinking practically, the olive oil/vinegar option would be good for re-gifting if the guest wouldn't use it. You could also check and see, if you happen to have a bunch left over, if a food bank would accept the extras. Edited for grammar

i'd prefer the oil and vinegar because i'd actually use them, and because i don't drink very much wine.

we're doing herb infused olive oil as favors. hope it goes over well!

Do you have alot of people under age of 21? If so I'd be careful with handing out liquor as favors.

You can't please everyone. Both of these options are very generous favors!

As a guest, I'd suggest the oil and vinegar. People who don't like the vinegar you're gifting can either not take the favor, or possibly regift it.

As a host, I'd suggest the wine. If people don't take a bottle, you can keep it and drink it yourself!

I like both options (and I also like chocolate and cookies and just about anything food related). Is either one of these favors more associated with your personalities?

We did one full bottle of wine per couple. The wine was made by FIL and MIL. It is a family thing so it meant a lot for us to have it and for them to make it. We did two different kinds so trading could happen if people were so inclined. Not everyone drinks but no bottles were left behind, possibly because they could easily be "regifted." My cousin that couldn't make it told me she was excited that Aunt and Uncle (non drinkers) gave her their bottle.

Are any of your guests flying? I was thinking about liquid favors but almost all our guests are out of town and I doubt most of them will check a bag.

Very good point. Even if they do check a bag there is still the concern of the bottles breaking. Baggage handlers are not gentle.

ETA: Both red wine and olive oil could destroy all the clothing in the suitcase.

Great point! A good portion of my guests are flying and normally don't check their bags. The olive oil and vinegar would be 2.5 oz bottles so I think that would be OK to put in their carry-on bags.
