Registry Help

So if FI's foot is ok we may start our registry this weekend. We're probably only going to register at two places Bed Bath & Beyond and Sur La Table. Any tips or advice?

Things to register for not register for? Anything you wished you had registered for? Brands you were unhappy/happy with? We have a lot of our own stuff but now we're looking to upgrade what we have and get some formal china too.

Any advice is always appreciated!!!

Unless you plan on throwing lots of fancy parties, I would say skip the china. I got nicer every day stuff that works for the casual parties I have. Best decision I made. I had formal china from my first marriage and it sat in a box or china cabinet the entire time I had it. Such a waste of pretty dishes. My MIL has only used hers once, and offered me her set so she wouldn't have to store hers anymore.

I really want the fancy china, I love lennox and their patterns. I've dream about registering for a nice china pattern for way too long. We're hosting my family for thanksgiving and we have a bunch of different mismatched plates for everyone to be eating on. If no one gets it for us it won't be the end of the world we can get it ourselves.

I registered at BB&B and Williams Sonoma. I wish I had registered for more but, honestly, two grown 30+ year olds who have both been on there own and doing pretty well on their own don't need much when they combine homes. I had guests complain, however, that everything on my registry was gone (I didn't have a wedding shower so I thought I could keep it small).

Extra sheets and blankets (at least two sets) are a big plus...especially if you have any animals.

And wine glasses...lots and lots of wine glasses.

I'd say if you've been dreaming about fancy china, then you should get it. I'm a sucker for the Vera Wang Wedgewood in Grosgrain. So pretty!

Oh, and I love my Kitchen Aid mixer, my roasting pan and my spice grinder. I wish I would have registered for a double broiler and maybe more tools for the grill since I grill a ton. I just had problems registering for things because I didn't want anyone to feel obligated to buy me stuff...instead I just frustrated my friends/familty/co-workers. So, in short, don't be like me.

Ditto the wine glasses. I officially have every single type of alcohol glass out there. It makes me crazy happy. If you don't have an electric wine opener, you must get one.

This also makes me happy when I visit you and you have all the alcohol to go with all the glasses. Seriously, I don't stay up that late... ever. I'm an old lady. H was shocked when I came home from hanging out with you and @loves2shop4shoes that late. We must do it again. I'll host if you guys can handle our big monster of a dog....he won't jump on you, I swear.

Definitely plan to register for some wine glasses and bar related items we have a room in the house dubbed the "wine room". I'd like a kitchen aid mixer too. We don't want to be greedy or for people to feel obligated so the plan is to keep the registry small.

@peaseblossom55 I've already had complaints our registry is too small lol. What I really want to say is we're moving and don't know where to (house wise, we know city) so how can I figure out what we need???! But yea we didnt do real china cause I'm too clumsy

I'm most excited to get new food storage containers without bpa. Ours are gross currently.

Oh I like the idea of new storage containers w/out the BPA I'll have to remember that! thanks!

I originally didn't want china and then we had a pre-Christmas dinner at my stepsister's house and they broke out the china and I realized then that I did want to have it for in the future.

We've lived together for a really long time so most of the things on our registry were updated items. We updated our towels, sheets, and everyday dishes. We finally got a large crockpot. We now have serving dishes and things like that which we didn't have before.

FI and I combined a lot of our kitchen items that we had from college which were very used and gross so we updated a lot of our kitchen items. We registered for a better knife set, wine glasses, some serving dishes, and dishes for hosting parties/ company. We also did register for china because I've always wanted my own china set and we registered for the Lennox set for Thanksgiving and Easter. I got my Grandmother's set for Christmas.

@CocoBellaF - Thank you. I think I'm just feeling old lately because I'm tired and stressed (and I'm starting to notice the appearance of wrinkles). I'm hoping our weekend away in Michigan will be relaxing.

@peaseblossom55 I am figuring out my registry as well - and when FI live together and already got rid of tons of crap when we merged households. After looking at all the formal china, I thin we've dcided to go with what is apparently called "casual china" that can be dressed up or dressed down for everyday use - some of that is still just as expensive as formal china! (Although most of it is stoneware and therefore "chip resistant".)

I think the registry was one of the most difficult parts of planning for me. I know it sounds silly, but i'm not a person who asks for anything and I really didn't want people to feel obligated. Plus...we didn't NEED anything really. My mom finally said to think about when I attend weddings for friends and family - I LOVE giving gifts! I love shopping for something that would be used for years to come. I attacked my registry with that in mind.

We tried to keep a wide variety of prices. Things like my KitchenAid stand mixer around $300 all the way down to $2-$5 kitchen utinsils. We registered at Pottery Barn, Target and Etsy. Etsy was mostly for some of the "unique" and more personalized gifts, Target was for everyday and Pottery Barn was our "Casual China" and other special items.

I registered for Thank You cards and they came in very handy after the wedding. Dishes and kitchenware were really popular items on our registry. Frames were also a popular item.

@allusive007 I love cooking and kitchen gadgets so it should be fun. I don't want to over register either I'm debating on whether to register for a kitchen aide mixer though.... I wonder if I will use it enough to justify the cost.

@Peaseblossom55 - I've already used my mixer a lot more than i'd expected. Cake batter, mashed potatoes, icing, whipped cream, cookies - and I've only had it for 4 months. It's definitly not something I use every day, but it is very nice to have around. A bunch of H's cousins went in together on it...so it wasn't just from one person. That's why I didn't mind registering for some big items...sometimes people want to do more than what they alone can afford so they go in on a bigger item. Something to think about.

@allusive07 it sounds kind of like my food processor. I don't use it every day but when I do use it makes life so much easier and more convenient. If I don't get it, it won't be the end of the world either... Thanks!

@peaseblossom55 you can also use a Kitchen Aid to shred any cooked meat (saw on Pinterest and it actually worked!) I do that whenever I"m making carnitas, chicken tacos, etc.

@katej16 interesting I would probably keep the mixer if I got one meat free since I am vegetarian. Since I do most of the cooking most of the bigger kitchen items remain meat free, if not it's there are two one for meat and one for my vegetarian cooking. :-)

Honestly we registered for all the extra crap we knew we'd never buy on our own. Like nice serving wear, super nice wine glasses, all the kitchen gadget type stuff. We also waited until after the wedding to add things to our registry because we got so many gift cards. Macy's had a big sale last week and I had about $60 left to spend so I added a bunch of stuff to the registry. We got the sale price and an extra 20% off. I got $225.00 worth of stuff for $82! My H was impressed!

We're planning on getting all new plates, bowls, and silverware (probably not glassware). We're not going to get china, mostly because we never entertain and we have zero room for anything we're not using right now. We'll see if we'll get talked into it by an older relative. I love my grandmother's china, and this sounds terrible, but I'd rather inherit it later on when we have more space than have someone waste money buying us some now.

We're going to upgrade pretty much ALL of our linens. My partner has OCD and can't use a towel more than once between washing them, and his crappy towels from college are falling apart. We also can't wait to get a new comforter and duvet cover.

Finally, there are some kitchen gadgets and appliances we're looking forward to. I've wanted a KitchenAid for SO FUCKING LONG. We also could use a small food processor and a blender. I'd like to replace our toaster; it was nice but cheap, so part of it broke (can't easily get the toast out of it). We're thinking of asking for an immersion blender, but besides soups, what do you folks use one for?

We registered for pretty much everything. Since we both still live with our parents we do not have that much stuff. We did BB&B and Amazon. BB&B is most of our stuff. Amazon has games, a few things that are cheaper there and a couple other random things. I think we have about 290-300 items total between the two.
I decided we did not need fancy china. I have a few mixed plates that were my great-uncles. I loved picking out nice new dishes. We picked Noritake Colorwave in Blue. I like all the matching items. Also the accent plates with flowers which help dress it up. I also liked picking out linens and our bathroom set.

KNIVES! I love to cook, and I cannot express how much difference a good knife set makes. We registered for a Wusthoff set from Crate & Barrell. It comes with 8 knives, scissors, and a block, and has extra slots you can add additional knives to it as you go. I had a KitchenAid set before, and Wusthoff is by far a better knife.
