XP: Ethical question for selling computer (not wedding related)

Cross-posting with Chit Chat to get as many different viewpoints as I can.  It's not really etiquette but I think a lot of the same considerations come up.

I am replacing my 2009 MacBook Pro.  My question is regarding how to phrase the Ebay ad for my old computer, which I think is still worth enough money to sell.

My computer has started to get PAINFULLY slow lately.  Spinning rainbow, icons not loading, hanging on startup, the works.  I took it to the Apple Store today and it checked out perfectly on every diagnostic, except the battery is starting to lose its capacity (as would normally be expected in a computer this age).  There is nothing diagnostically "wrong," but it's so slow that it is virtually unusable for me.  Apple guy told me if I can deal with the slow loading, it should be usable for a couple more years at least.  I can't deal with the slowness, I'm losing my mind.

I want to be honest when selling this thing, but I still want to make some money back.  Ebay ads for my same model computer range widely from $300-$900.  What do you all think is my ethical obligation to describe the slow performance?  May I assume any buyer purchasing a 2009 computer knows it will be slow?  I also feel like I should disclose the condition of the battery, but again I am not sure how to walk the line between honesty and making the sale.

Another wrinkle: most eBay listings describe the computer not by the year, but by the processor type.  I've noticed this is especially true for the professional computer stores advertising prices on the higher end.  On the one hand, I think this is a little misleading since it obscures the fact that the computer is fairly old.  On the other hand, this was the only year that used the particular processor, and a quick Google search would tell a buyer; plus, I think it would put my post at a disadvantage if I list the year when others don't.

You all seem like considerate ladies on here, so thanks in advance for any thoughts.

  • How much memory are you using on your macbook?  I have a feeling that doing a complete restore on it (after transferring all of your files to your new one) will show that it was just too overloaded with stuff and will begin to work fine again.

I wish.  I will be trying that as a last ditch, but the Apple store ran a software diagnostic and found no problems.  He told me that a full restore likely wouldn't have much effect.  I did that last year to try and fix slowness and I got some incremental improvement, but nothing major.

I'm typically using just over 4-5GB of my 8GB RAM.  Hard drive is under half full (70GB out of 160).

The configuration I want (MBP with Retina, lowest version but upgraded to 8GB RAM) will be $1199 after my student discount.  Not chump change.  This is also complicated by the fact that if I can wait until January, FI becomes eligible for a 20% rebate from his new employer.  But I'm extremely concerned that the computer will not perform well during my exam prep or (God forbid) will have a problem while I'm typing an exam.  Some of this is typical law student exam paranoia, but I'm really worried I'll screw myself for exams over $200.

A 2009 should not be so slow that its barely usable as you've described.  Please don't assume a buyer will think it will be.  I have a 2008 and its nearly as fast as my H's 2013.  Regardless, you should absolutely be forthcoming of the issues you are experiencing with the computer when selling it.
A few months back my 08' was having major glitches (distortion and crashing.) The Apple store could not diagnose the problem.  I had it sent out to Apple for repair.  It cost me $330/flat fee to replace whatever was needed and came with a 90 warranty.  Turns out the video card was bad.  They replaced the entire logic board and *fingers crossed* so far so good.  Maybe you could check out that option?
My H's uncle works for a Mac dealer and told me that he would be able to privately sell my (repaired) 08' for a firm $600.  I decided to keep it because in the end I would only make about $250 on the deal.

  • Thanks all. I think at this point, since I want to buy the new computer anyway, I don't want to put money into this one trying to fix something that may or may not actually be a problem. I'd rather sell it as is. I guess one note about it being "virtually unusable" is that I really tax the computer at a high level. I'm a law student and frequently run a lot of programs, annotated PDFs, complicated formatting and footnotes, etc. I think this computer would be okay for someone who will use it for web browsing or normal word processing, like as a household computer or for a younger student. It is generally fine when I am not working on it, just using it for the web at home. I will definitely describe the problems when I sell it. Especially, as Lobster says, if I could have a problem with eBay.

  • I sold an old laptop that had been giving me issues. I disclosed absolutely everything about it and someone bought it. A lot of people cannibalize them for parts, etc. Just be honest and you should be fine.
  • I would state everything you put here, the good about the diagnostics and the bad about the performance.  If you are already going to get a new one you might as well sell this one.  Sounds like you're doing your homework with e-bay sales. GL!
