Parking

So I've never had my parking paid for at a wedding before, but from what I gather from this site, good etiquette would require that I pay for my guests' valet costs, yes?

Re: Parking

  • 1) Are the only parking spots available in a lot where you MUST pay? If there is absolutely no way around your guests paying for parking in a lot or garage, I'd say, it would lovely if you could pay for their parking costs.

    2) Are your guests REQUIRED to valet their car? If your guests are able to park their own car, you aren't required to pay for their valet. If they ARE required to valet, I highly suggest it, as many people don't carry cash.

  • At our venue, guests have the option to valet park, park in a garage (two blocks away so I'm not recommending it) and having the ticket validated, or parking on the street so we are not paying for valet.  We are letting guests know they have these options on our website and on our map/ direction card.

I have never been to a wedding where parking was paid for by the hosts but I do think that if valet is the only option guests have, it is nice to do this because as pp stated, many of them will not carry cash.

  • They're not required to valet; they could self-park in the garage, but they'd have to pay to park either way.

I would talk to the garage in question and see if you can work out a deal with parking.  If you can, then you should make a separate card in your invite that describes the parking and that the guests would need to go to the front desk (or wherever) to get their parking validated.  So in this instance you would only be paying per car instead of per person.

For our wedding we paid $3 or $5 a person for parking in the lot right outside the stadium.  This was a mandatory payment in our contract.

Our venue gives us discounted valet with our wedding, so that it'd actually be cheaper than if someone were to self-park in the garage next door. I think it's only $4 per car, but I'd have to double check the details.
  • I have always had my parking paid for when paying to park it the only option. I would be in a bind as I don't carry cash. I expect parking to be paid for if I can't park for free. But IMHO :)

  • I also would expect my parking to be paid for.  I never carry cash and, similar to a cash bar, I just see this as appropriately hosting your guests.  However, if there was a free option, I would not expect the B&G to pay for something fancier like valet or a garage.  I'd take the free option and be happy about it.

But here it sounds like your guests would have to pay either way, so I think the best thing to do is work out a deal for valet parking.  Your guests will really appreciate it.

  • If a fee for parking is required, yes, you should pick it up.  That said, I'd see if you can negotiate a deal with the garage for it.  Maybe you can get some kind of discount.
  • Okay, paying for parking it is. Thanks, girls!

  • If your wedding is in a hotel, and people are staying overnight, that parking you do not have to pay for. But if someone is only coming to the wedding, they should not have to pay to park.
