Question for those ladies who walk dogs in their neighborhoods, or who live in neighborhoods where lots of dogs are walked. There are two or three homes in my new neighborhood with those little "no pooping" signs on the lawns. Do you interpret them to mean, keep your dog far away from the lawn, or just to clean up after them immediately (as you should anyway)?

I wouldnt avoid it. I would just pick up after my pup, like I always do.

I would be irritated that someone thought that I needed to be reminded to pick up after my dog and probably just leave it out of spite (not really but I'd be tempted to).

My dogs can't read so I would avoid those lawns. How would you feel if the home owner came out mid-poop? My husband was chased, scooper in hand, by a crazy neighbor who doesn't like dogs or men.

Well, since dogs don't read I would assume those signs are for people (who shouldn't poop on lawns regardless). I would probably also try to keep my dogs off their lawns, though most people who leave doggie presents will do that whether there is a sign or not and I always pick up after mine.

I get this, I totally do, but there are some assholes in my in-laws area that let their dog shit on their yard every.freaking.day until my FIL flipped on them when he saw them. I'm not sure how a sign helps an asshole though.

OP, just avoid those houses but if it happens, continue to be courteous and pick up after your pup.

Those signs annoy me, too. Especially the ones shaped like a little pooping dog, because obviously having one random dog poop on your lawn once in your lifetime is far worse than looking at that crude sign every day. Ugh.

Someone stopped a neighbor of ours and yelled at her for letting her dog poop on "somebody's lawn". She politely pointed out that it was her lawn, and even so she'd be picking it up afterwards. Not to be defeated, he said "well, you also shouldn't let your dog poop on anyone else's lawn, anyway" *smh*

This is what I have been trying to do. . . my dog is a new rescue. Frankly, I am so excited when he uses the bathroom outside on cold days and I can get back inside faster, that I don't want to deter him by dragging him away when he starts to go. No matter what path we take we pass one of the three "no pooping" houses. I always try to cross the street with him, but it's not always possible.

I would stay far away from that yard. I happen to have a dog that will only poop in my back yard. It's good and bad at the same time.

There are tons of dog owners that do not pick up after their dogs. In my old neighborhood, there were piles of dog shit everywhere and it really pissed me off. I felt it gave all of us dog owners a bad name. I honestly don't blame people for putting up signs like that.

I guess I'd see it as fair game in a neighborhood where it was a problem, but in the neighborhood where I live now, it isn't - and I doubt that it's because of the signs.

Signs won't stop assholes from letting their dogs poop wherever the hell they want and then not pick it up.

I would try and stay away from those houses if possible but if not then just continue to pick up the poop like you usually do.

I would also look in your HOA (if you have one) by-laws to see what it says about dogs on other people's property. If a neighbor raises hell then at least you will have some facts as to what you can and cannot do in your neighborhood.

@Maggie 0829. . . . . No HOAs around here. I think I know of one within a 50 mile radius. Are they more popular in other parts of the country?

@kaos16 - we have HOAs everywhere in MD.

Well then I guess in your situations it could be seen as trespassing if you let your dog and/or yourself walk on the lawn. But it is horrible that these people may have had one or two randoms poops left in their yard and they have to act like dicks because of it.

I'm on our HOA board, so even though the neighborhood rule is just to clean it up, I'd avoid those lawns just to avoid conflict and not piss anyone off.

I don't have a dog now, but plan to get one this summer. If it's not possible to avoid their lawns and my dog takes a dump, I'll pick it up. If they yell at me, I will shrug and apologize with an internal sigh and eyeroll.
