Wedding Party

I dont have enough friends

My FI has 6 VERY CLOSE friends. They are truly like his brothers and he wants them all to be in the wedding. I only have 3 best friends and a sister, making my total of bridesmaids only 4. I have a ton of "friends" but nobody else that I really want to be in my wedding. The girls that I have chosen are like sisters to me and I cant see my self throwing in 2 other people just to even out the numbers. Any suggestions? My FI hates the idea of having everybody walk alone. He thinks the numbers should be even and I should just pick somebody because I have "tons of friends" . I dont know what to do.

Re: I dont have enough friends

  • Do not pick someone as filler. That's really shitty to do. Uneven sides are completely okay. Show your FI these responses and hopefully he'll back down. You don't have to have them walk in couples. Walking one by one adds a total of 30 seconds, so this is a non-issue.
  • Don't add anyone just to even up sides. You pick your closest people, he picks his.
If you want to pair people, do as Robyn5298 suggested or have 2 of the gm, escort the moms, the grandmothers or other special guests.

  • You don't need to have even sides. Just go with the 4 you have. Not a big deal.
  • I agree and have said before, bridal parties are not butterflies, meaning they do not have to be symmetrical.
That said, if your FI is very close with a couple of guys who have SIs that will be friends with you as couples, you could ask those ladies and increase the circle.
  • I agree that you don't need to have equal sides.  My FI has only best man and I have 3 BM's.  We are just going to have the guys already up front and just the girls walk in.

I had 5 BMs and H had 3 GM.  My last two girls just walked together for the recessional and for the intro to the reception.  I was also in a wedding were I was escorted by 2 of the groom's brothers.  You can get this worked out without having to add extra girls to make the sides even.
  • Don't add anyone else. 4 and 6 is perfectly fine. No one has to walk alone... 4 groomsmen walk with 4 bridesmaids and then 2 groomsmen walk up side by side. Or the last 2 GMs could escort the mothers/grandmothers if there's no one else escorting them.

It's not your FI's place to ask you to choose two more people. His chose his friends and you chose yours. Both of you get to pick your own attendants without each others' two cents.

  • I have tried to head this battle off early -- we'll see how it goes. I basically told FI up front that I had three girls picked out. I could ask more, nobody's bought dresses yet, but I don't feel the need to have a huge group. Some of his friends I think will naturally end up in other roles (photos, music); the rest can be ushers or just guests.

If he's already asked them, It's too late to have them do anything else but be groomsmen. Your FI really needs to get over the symmetry thing.

Personally, I think it's kind of rude to make friends "work" during your wedding, unless they offer. Also, if they're already been asked to be groomsmen, you can't assign them other "roles".
  • I'll be one of your bridesmaids. I will be polite and lovely, and you can just thank me in cake.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Tell your FI that it's not up to him how many bridesmaids you have or who they are, just as it's not up to you how many groomsmen he has or who they are.  Each of you gets to make your own choices, and the other one has to live with them.
