Wedding Invitations & Paper

Invitations for guests that won't be able to attend?

I'm planning a May 2011 wedding, I'm working on the guest lists and am having some trouble. Do I send invitations to people that I know will not be able to attend, but would feel slighted if they didn't get an invite? What is the proper etiquette for this? We are both from New York and are planning the wedding there, but we live in Florida. So many of the freinds and family that we have here in florida most likely will not be able to get to New York for the wedding, I just don't know how to handle this!Cry

  • You send them invites.  You never know what lengths some people might go through to make it to your wedding.

you send them invites even if you think/know they might not make it, make sure to include their rsvp card to confirm their attendance/non-attendance
  • If you would really like them to be at your wedding, then send an invitation.

Don't make assumptions about how people will respond to a wedding invitation, and don't send invitations to anyone unless you know that you have both the funds in your budget and the space at your venue to accommodate them.

You will likely be surprised that some people that you knew for 100% sure would respond "yes" don't show, and that people that you're positive won't attend end up coming to your wedding.

  • Yep, go ahead and invite them.

  • Definitely invite those you'd like to attend.  I knew my cousin in Vancouver wouldn't make it but I still invited him.
  • We live in Florida and are getting married in Boston. I'm in the same boat as you. Send them invites anyway!

  • If you know for *sure* that they won't be coming (ie elderly relatives who can no longer travel) there is another option.  My Great aunt and Uncle will *not* be able to attend, period. Rather than not invite them, which just seems mean, I'm sending them a symbolic invite, with a note stating that I know they're not going to be able to go (we've discussed it already) but that this signifies how much I *wish* they could be there, and will go on to talk about the influence they've had on my life, etc.
  • ...also you can send out Annoucements on your wedding day...

We're arranging to have bouqets sent to the elder, travel restricted relatives & making sure there's a webcast, so they can be included w/o being there.

    Just some thoughts!

  • Send them - but do not send our more invitations than you can afford to get all yeses back on.

  • Thank you so much for your response to my invitation question. Where in South Florida are you? I'm in Fort Myers. My head is just spinning with all this wedding "stuff"! Ha ha ha. And now I think we are going to be changing the date! Ughhhhh. Thanks again!
  • That is a fantastic idea! Thank you so much!
