There's a DCP who picks up a kid at DD1's preschool.  She's way beyond being a know-it-all and I roll my eyes at her daily.

But today.  Ugh.  She broke out the "I'm offended when people tell me 'happy holidays' because this country was founded on christian beliefs."  AND TWO OTHER PEOPLE AGREED WITH HER AND THEY HELD A CONVERSATION.

Other gems overheard include:

"When did the atheists get to decide how we celebrate in school?!"

"When *I* was in school we had two jewish classmates.  Well we just held our christmas parties and they went to the library.  That's how they should do it.  The other religions could go have their own parties."  WTELMF

"People should respect the views and cultures of the country where they live."  Having respect /=/ being willing to celebrate something they do not believe.

I yelled it all to DH when I got home.  He was all "why didn't you say something?!"  I just couldn't.  I've been known to speak my mind, but I really just couldn't get passed what was going on.  And now I'm mad at myself and scheming about how I can work the words "holiday tree" into a conversation on Monday so they'll get riled up.

    I work in news, and posted a question on our FB page asking people if they send holiday cards and if so, snail-mail or e-mail.

    SO.MANY.PEOPLE were like, "They are CHRISTmas cards because it's for CHRIST you liberal commie pinko!"

    So I commented and said, "Well, we said 'holiday cards' for our Jewish viewers who send Hanukkah cards and our non-religious viewers who send New Year's cards.' 

    And someone wrote back and said, "Those are both made-up holidays."

    uhm....ok, then, crazypants.

    No.  Made up Holidays are "Steak and Blowjob Day".  New Years happens...wait...EVERY YEAR.  And so does Hanukkah!  Stupid arseholes.

    I may or may not have said a slightly more politically correct version of that, repeatedly, to our stupid people viewers. On account of....well....they had it coming.

    Just print this off in a holiday card and give it to them:

    Now you have adults going “I was offended, I was offended and I have rights!” Well so what, be offended, nothing happened. You’re an adult, grow up, and deal with it. I was offended! Well, I don’t care! Nothing happens when you’re offended. “I went to the comedy show and the comedian said something about the lord, and I was offended, and when I woke up in the morning, I had leprosy."

    Nothing Happens. “I want to live in a democracy but I never want to be offended again.” Well you’re an idiot.

    How do you make a law about offending people? How do you make it an offense to offend people? Being offended is subjective. It has everything to do with you as an individual or a collective, or a group or a society or a community. Your moral conditioning, your religious beliefs. What offends me may not offend you. And you want to make laws about this? I’m offended when I see boy bands for god sake.

    It’s a valid offense, I’m offended. They’re cooperate shills, posing as musicians to further a modeling career and frankly I’m disgusted.

    ETA:  You should wish atheists to throw your holiday parties.  There's a reason "Skeptics in the Pub" became a world wide movement.  :D

    I get irritated when someone gets all offended over being wished a merry christmas-because, you know, might offend the muslims, hindus, chinese, jehovas witnesses...the list goes on!  Politically correct terminology has gone crazy in the last decade. I'm all for tolerance and understanding, but it goes both ways.  I celebrate my Merry Christmas, you celebrate your Happy Holidays (or Hanukkah, or Ramadan...etc).  Here in Canada, there's been a lot of "you can't say Christmas, because it might offend someone somewhere".  That kind of thinking I just can't understand.

    FI was making fun of me for this last week. I was on Vista print trying to order Christmas cards and was getting upset that every card I liked said Happy Holidays. I finally found one that let me customize the greeting and changed it to Merry Christmas. 

    Not all that religious, but this was the first year I made an effort to get into Christmas so my cards were going to say Christmas damn it.

    I also say "Merry Christmas", but if someone says "Happy Holidays" to me or, hey, "Happy Hannukkah", I don't get offended.  People get too up-in-arms about such things.  I agree with @natswild about the politically correct terminology going crazy.  Hey, someone on the phone at Bed, Bath, and Beyond wished me a happy Thanksgiving a week ago - I didn't get all upset and say "excuse me, I'm CANADIAN and it is NOT my thanksgiving, thank you very much!"  I said "Thanks, same to you!" and moved on.
