NWR: Now I'M losing my shit.

This is about as far from the topic of this board as I can get, but I just want to vent about this right now.  And maybe some of you ladies have gone through something similar.

I just came back from the dentist and heard I might have to lose two of my front teeth, thanks to Dr. Assface Orthodontist from when I was in high school.  Apparently my orthodontist put too much force on those teeth too quickly, and it has caused the roots to start receding.  So now I have two teeth that are literally on their way to falling out of my mouth, thanks to braces I got removed almost ten years ago!!  I'm seeing red right now.  I am BEYOND angry.

The dentist looked at my X Rays and could even tell me exactly  what kind of procedure the orthodontist had done, which caused the damage.  There's nothing they can do to reverse it, the best they can do is splint the teeth to the next-door teeth to hold them in, but even that is only temporary.  Either way, they're coming out sooner or later.

I'm headed to an endodontist for a specialist opinion.  Meanwhile I literally can't even remember Dr. Assface's name (neither can my dad, who I just texted), but at least I feel like I should be reporting him to some kind of authority.  Anybody else had to lose a tooth-- did you feel really emotional about it?  I mostly just feel angry.

Re: NWR: Now I'M losing my shit.

  • Omg. I'm sorry. I would be hella pissed!

Do you have any old filed you can look up to find the Orthodontist's name?
  • That's terrible! I am so sorry!

I cracked a tooth in the back lower jaw and had it pulled. It took me a few years to get it replaced (it's expensive). It was such a pain to replace that I have sworn off pistachios with shells (it cracked due to a hard shell).

  • I'm sorry. That really stinks. I had some bad dental work in high school that my current dentist has fixed, but nothing too drastic. I hope you find a solution soon.
  • That's awful! I'm so sorry! I didn't have to lose a tooth, BUT I did have to have a root canal at the age of 16, right after my braces came off. While I had my braces on, I noticed that one of the teeth had started to turn gray. I didn't think too much of it, thought maybe I was seeing things because of the brackets. Never had any pain and no trauma to me teeth (outside of the braces). Turns out, the roots were dead and the tooth needed a root canal. The orthodontist SWEARS it wasn't his fault, nothing his did could've caused it. My dentist kept asking and asking if I had any trauma to my face, like getting hit with a ball, object, etc and nothing had happened. I still, to this day, believe that it had something to do with my braces and your story confirms my suspicisions even more.

It probably won't make you feel any better about having to lose your teeth but I do have a friend that is missing both of his front teeth and I NO clue until one day I saw him without the replacement teeth in (cannot for the life of me remember what they're called). They look so natural. I'm sure they're a hassle but no one can tell that he's missing teeth.

  • Thanks everybody.  The dentist said they can put in permanent implants, so I would probably just get used to it-- nothing to put in and take out.  It sounds like it will be incredibly expensive, which sucks when getting ready to graduate school and pay for a wedding... we'll see what the specialist says.  I'm hoping I can put it off until I start my full-time job after graduation.

The orthodontist's name just came to me, but I still prefer Assface.  I might write him a bunch of negative reviews, or find an orthodontics board I can report him to.  I suppose a malpractice suit is another option, but I'm not sure I want to go through that.

  • Haha, yeah I just find it funny they use the same term for those horrendous pageant teeth.  Fi's cousin has the kind of flipper you're talking about, it attaches to the teeth on either side and it looks totally normal.  God help any dentist who gives me pageant teeth.... I might bite them.

I am really really sorry this is happening, especially with the front teeth. I'm so sorry about that.

I have lost a few teeth, but fortunately they have been back and on the side teeth. The only one that had any sort of reaction was when I got one of my wisdom teeth pulled out over the summer. It was impacted (under the gum) but it had to come out because it was at an angle and so putting pressure on my other teeth. This pressure makes my teeth basically squish together and be all crooked, etc.

After the procedure I went into shock. No crying or anger, just downright scared cuz I had never in my life gone in shock before. At least from what I am aware of.

I was told by my now dentist, that if my dentist when I was younger had frickin pulled out my wisdom teeth when I was younger (teens) my teeth wouldn't be as bad as they are now. (The squishing and pressing together and the crookedness wouldn't be as bad.)

I am really sorry this has happened. I hope you are able to find out who your old dentist was because that is NOT right at all.

  • I feel your pain to a lesser extent. I had to have gum graft surgery because my orthodontist put my braces (on my lower front teeth) so close to the gum line that my gums receded. If my dentist hadn't caught it early on it could have led to tooth loss. The toughest part was getting insurance to cover it; they initially refused, stating that it was cosmetic surgery. They came around eventually though. Good luck to you!
  • "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth."

I think I'm veering into hysterical sarcasm as I process this information.

  • I'm so sorry this is happening to you.  I had loadsa fun with my braces too, but nothing like that!
  • I don't have any horror stories, but you have my sympathies -- I spent the better part of a decade in braces when I was younger, and I have permanent damage from them, too.

  • Your state board of dentistry would be a good place to start. Hope the new doc will take payments, I think most of them have to nowadays. Care Credit has awful interest rates, but would be a possibility. That so sucks if you have to use wedding gift money to have dental surgery.
  • Wow, that's crazy!  I will say, you can get some really good fake teeth these days.  No one will even notice.

The other day, one of my good friends mentioned how she'd knocked out both of her front teeth in an accident when she was a kid.  I asked if they were her permanent teeth.  She said yes and that her two front teeth were fake.  I had never noticed in the seven or eight months that I've known her.  And we've spent quite a bit of time together and she's one of those people who's a super happy person and is always smiling.
  • I so sorry that really sucks. I am actually going through something semi similar. My orthodontist wouldn't listen to me when I said my retainers didn't fit me, I was choking etc and now my 2 top teeth are starting to semi overlap and you would never know I had braces. He also took my braces off before my under bite was fixed, which also causes jaw pain and even though he had me have oral surgery for a back tooth that was stuck chose to leave the one baby tooth I have in.

So now I'm 26 and still have a baby tooth which is now starting to loosen and right in the front. And my braces caused recessed gums and I have a few exposed nerves that can be painful from that and I think may end up having more loose teeth issues from the recessed gums.

Oh and I also have a serious fear/anxiety about the dentists that even meds doesn't help. So sorry to kind of hijack your post but I'm sorry your going through that, it blows and its ridiculous how much dental procedures cost.

  • Yes this happened to my daughter.  First the two teeth started to change color to a shade of gray.  So far she still has them but very soon she will need to do something.  The orthdontist warned us that this could happen 15 years ago when she was 13.
  • By the way, its going to be a very costly repair.  :(
  • I'm sorry, that totally sucks.

When I had braces in HS, I had to get a tooth removed. Something about it being easier to fix, or whatever. It was HORRIBLE.

Maybe if you Google orthos in your area, you & your dad will see a familiar name. I'd definitely try to do something!
