Makeup in the 702 review

Hey,

Just got back from my wedding (11/10/13) and wanted to review Makeup in the 702 on here since I saw that Desert Glamour cancelled some dates.  I will write a full reviews on all my vendors sometime this week.

Prior to wedding Megan was really great.  She was pretty quick with e-mails and she assured me that everything would be great.  I knew what I wanted in terms of hair, specifically for a hair do that could be done so that it was up for ceremony and down for reception.  She told me it would be fine, no problem.  I also let them know that me and my mother were WOC and wanted to know that they could handle us.  She also gave me reassurance.

Me, my mom and my mother-in-law had hair and makeup done by them.  We needed to be ready at 11 AM, but MIT 702 said we should aim to be ready by 10 AM.  They would come at 7 AM.

They were prompt.  Literally at 7:01 AM the doorbell rang.  I had makeup done by Celina and hair by Courtney.  I had my m/u done first.  I showed her various pictures of what I was looking for.  I had my makeup done the day before for free at Sephora since I'm a rouge member and had showed that makeup artist the same set of pictures.  She did a great job and I will admit that the bar was set high because of it.  As for Celina's work, I don't think I looked like any of the sample pictures, nor did I like my look at all.  I didn't get a good look at myself because right after she finished, I went to the hair chair.  It was only until after that I noticed that:

a) my got tons of glue on my lower lashes
b) my foundation was uneven
c) my blush and eyeshadow weren't blended perfectly, so there were harsh lines
spectacular.
d) some of my eyeliner was sparse and moving

I did the airbrush foundation.  I didn't like it.  It looked like a lighter coverage that what I normally use and that's tinted moisturizer.  It didn't rub off on my clothes.

MIT 702 makes strong claims about how they are the "only" company that does a lot of things, so I want to be clear on what they do provide.

They offer a touch up to go kit.  Yes, but this kit consists of a sponge for face, an eyeshadow applicator and a free lipgloss.  I don't use powder regularly and she recommended I use powder to keep my face looking good for so many hours, so I had to get my cousin to make a quick trip to sephora.

Regarding the lipgloss, it wasn't a color I would have chosen, but literally she had a dozen tubes of this "universally flattering" lipgloss that she gave to me, my mom and my mother-in-law.  My mom actually refused to wear it because she felt awkward having the same color as me and used her own lipstick instead.  The lipgloss definitely wasn't 15 hr proof, it was gone after I had my first glass of champagne in the limo and in 90% of the pictures, I have nothing on my lips.

As for the lashes, I used my own because the ones they had were super long and looked fake.  (FYI - I used MUFE Gwen 152 lash, very natural).  Re the lasting of the makeup, I was done at 10:15 and got home just past midnight.  My eye makeup was still on, but had caked, my blush and foundation looked a bit sloppy.  I did have a long day, sweated, etc.

My mom, also a WOC, hated her makeup.  She said that the one time I did her makeup looked a lot better than what they did.  I didn't think my mom looked any better than when she normally does her makeup (and she is hard of seeing).

My mother-in-law (anglo) looked great.  Celina seemed hesitant to use lashes on her bc her natural lashes are so blond and she has light hair, but she was excited about them, so used them anyway.  She looked good.  She didn't look over the top or anything, a very natural look, which is similar to what she normally wears.

Hair
My mom has thinning hair and I had e-mailed ahead to let them know this.  She usually uses a product to add fullness and forgot it in NY.  I also emailed ahead about this.  The stylist (Courtney) emailed me back telling me to check out Sally's for the product but we didn't have enough time.  She did was she could, but unfortunately the product she had was grey and my mom had light brown hair with dark low lights.  Considering the circumstances, her hair looked good and held up throughout the day and night.  She wanted to add some brown, but the makeup artist said the only way would be to break an eyeshadow and she didn't want to do that because she didn't think it was worth it.  She also said this after going on about how she buys all types of things and writes them off on her taxes.  It isn't how I would have acted in her position, but completely understand her stance, though she could have been more professional in her wording and demeanor.

Despite telling me she couldn't do my hair in the fashion that Megan had told me was a go, she still did a good job.  My hair held well throughout the day and I was able to work it a little into what I wanted for the night.

My mother in law's hair was fantastic.  She had beautiful, thick, luxurious and plentiful hair, so admittedly was a great canvas to work with, but her hair was great and lasted the entire day.

My only commentary regarding the hair is that we all had the same colored bobby pins used on us and given to us for "touch ups," yet my mother in law has blond and red hair, my mother has light to medium brown hair and my hair is jet black.

Overall, these girls were both on time, super chipper and friendly.  I would rate hair an A- and makeup a B, at best.  Another additional commentary is that Celina, the makeup artist was done before Courtney the stylist was done.  She collected the money and said she had a day full of bookings so had to be on the go.  This is why I wasn't able to point out issues with my makeup to her.  Courtney stayed about a good 30 mins after that.  I thought this was weird and unprofessional.

I would definitely recommend Courtney for hair, but would suggest a different makeup artist.  If you have the time (I didn't), I would even suggest Sephora (Claudia helped me) as an alternative.

I would also like to add that they have sent me so many e-mails about reviewing them and I ignored.  Today I finally went in and tried to reviewed them through a link they provided (direct to wedding wire) and I wrote a brief and honest account of my experience.  A couple of hours later I got an e-mail saying that my review was being disputed.  Therefore, I have reason to believe that their overwhelming positive reviews are skewed.  This seems like important information to disclose.

Also, we paid $175 each for hair and makeup services, but I believe their rates are prorated depending on when you book.
  • I'm really sorry to hear of your experience, I hope everything else went well and you had a fabulous time! I choose to get my hair and makeup done in the salon at my hotel, I figured if I had problems it would have been easier to rectify and I wasn't comfortable having someone in my room. In the end I was very happy. I don't think many brides do this but I think its a good option. The salon was only a few floors down from my room so I didn't have to go anywhere near the lobby/ casino or walk through the hotel.
  • Thank you for the review, and sorry to hear that you didn't have the best experience with them.

This is the second bad review I've seen on here for Celina, which is a concern. I am booked with them for my wedding but have Keira and Deb booked which I am pleased about as I have seen several good reviews about their services on here. I also decided to pay the extra for a trial because if there are going to be any of these issues I want to know about them in advance!

The dispute over the review is also a major concern!

As spoon said, I really hope the rest of your day was perfect :)

  • I went back and did a search for that review and reading it was almost like a narration for my own experience.  I've gone back and read a ton of reviews on here and on other sites and I have only seen good things about Keira and Deb, so you are in good hands.

    Thanks for the support.

I did this too. Actually I found a Group On for $120 worth of services for $60. I ended up paying $80 on top of that, so my hair and makeup services cost $150 (including gratuity.)

I think a lot of brides forgo the hotel spa because you don't know who you're going to get. I absolutely loved my hair and makeup and they held up all day and night. I also think some spas are a tad more expensive, but if you find a good deal, it could be worth it!

  • OK I have to chime in here. I was stressing after Desert G cancelled on me so I contacted 702.

From the initial response email I was a bit put off. It was dripping with cheesiness and over the top sweetness. I read it to my girlfriend and she was dying laughing. Do you have to call me Sunshine and Dear? I mean we just met. Alright no big deal.

Then I got a text. Another email. Then we finally spoke on the phone where it felt like this woman was reading a script. With this fake, over the top saccharin bullshit. Then she sent me a email and proposal that was so long and way out of my price range. I told her so and she said her door is always open. The next day I get an email and a text saying that their Black Friday specials "just became available" and would I like a revised proposal. I said yes. She sent it to me and it was still way too high.

I was OOT for a few days and in that time she sent me two more emails asking for my feedback. Another one saying they just had another bride book on my date, so I'd better hurry! Are you fucking kidding me?

I finally told her she was just not competitive. She asked what price point I had seen from others. I told her and she said, and I quote "My dear, please by all means book them. Read the contract closely and ask for the business license please. Just for you and your price of mind on your day.
Best wishes to you and yours love."

This woman is a CRACK POT plain and simple. I work in sales and I think I could teach her a thing or two. Sorry, just needed to vent. I've been shaking my head about it all week!

  • THAT is why I just couldnt bring myself to book with 702. Also the squeaky clean reviews. I mean no disrespect but im actually more freaked out by hundreds of 5* / 100% reviews. That usually reeks of review farming, which another bride has hinted at (ie they harass for reviews then filter away anything undesirable). I also didnt like the whole "NOBODY ELSE DOES THIS.... NOBODY!" In reference to the lipstick and touch up kit. Ummmm MY HMUA DOES THAT - so stop lying. Now that is all on the owner.... Megan. Ive read genuine reviews and seen incredible pictures of brides that have been glammed up by 702 and there is definitely talent there. But their pushy sales tactics could be toned down a bit.

  • I don't know why this wasn't a flag for me, but yes, it is complete review farming.  My negative review (which was mind you only about 10% of the above) got flagged and they asked for verification.  I sent over the contract.  I was told this was not enough.  smh

Then I sent over the credit card receipt.  I was told I needed to provide a receipt for the balance paid (as per contract) and I said but their policy is for balances to be paid in CASH, i don't have a receipt for that.  I sent over pics that I had of their employees and am STILL waiting for my review to be "verified."

and the only reason I filled out a review was so that they could stop spamming with the "will you review me" e-mails.  My guess is that 90% of brides that do fill a review would leave it be after their review was flagged but I am passionate about my voice being heard.

also, i was asked no less than 5 times about my photographer, so I think they make give referral kickbacks to some photographers.
  • I am right with you AllyIDo- not only were they just far too expensive, the way they talked badly about other HMU vendors in Vegas because they have competitive pricing is total BS. Since we were in the same boat with our HMU cancellation, I decided to go with Angie Lum because she has amazing work and she was very straight to the point, no filter, no BS and that is exactly what I am like, so I figured we would work amazing together. Bri at Beauty by Bri was a close second because she was so nice, but not salesy in any means, but Angie's pricing just couldnt be topped (due to the discount she did for Desert Glamour cancellations)

I literally wanted to reach through the email and smack the person on the other side at 702...you don't know me and no I won't just take your word on things, I actually do research thank you very much, so quit with the false information and the defamation of other vegas vendors- that just shows a lack of confidence in your work and pricing.
  • I'm not sure if any of you read my reviews from my May 26th wedding on them (I posted them below for your reading enjoyment lol), but I still get ticked off thinking about it and having Megan try to justify that Celina is a 'National Dior Makeup Artist'. I could care two hoots less what title you labeled on her because her work is crap! A 'National' makeup artist would have a clue on how to at least BLEND eyeshadow and easily recreate any photo you show them for starters, especially when they tell you it's no problem and they've done this look a million times! And all the filtering on the reviews makes perfect sense because I couldn't for the life of me understand how it is through hundreds of positive reviews, I was the only bad one with this horrid outcome! I put my bad review on Yelp and surprisingly it's still there since I posted it in June. This was the one and only thing from my wedding that I kick myself about that I didn't just do my own makeup (or go with Your Beauty Call, like I was originally going to do) and hire someone for hair only!

Makeup in the 702 (Makeup: F, Hair: A+)

Here's where my day quickly turned to my worst nightmare coming true! My makeup artist was Celina and hairstylist was Courtney. They showed up on time, actually, 15 mins early. They were both very nice, got to work setting up, then made sure to go over what I wanted by showing them pictures on my phone of hair and makeup. Celina called me the day before to go over what look I was going for and had put me at ease by seeming confident in being able to give me my sexy smokey eye look I was going for. As Celina did my makeup, with each makeup application she did on me,  she gave out 'oohhhs and ahhhs and omg beautiful'! Imagine my horror, when Celina was done with my makeup and Courtney with my hair and they told me to look in the mirror by how beautiful I looked and the only words I could utter out were 'oh sh#t'! They said, is that good or bad?? REALLY???? My hair was really pretty, held up all night, no complaints, but my makeup....OMG I looked like Frankenstein's Bride!! She had all black eyeshadow from my lid all the way up to my brows, thick black eyeliner..AND not even blended in, all blotchy! My eyebrows, were filled in thin, bumpy and not even with eachother, the airbrush makeup I could see up close was all caked and dried out!! Now mind you, they showed up at 1 and the limo was picking us up at 3 and by this time it was 2:40!! I was crying, shaking and wanted her out of my face so I could try to fix the nightmare she created while she stood there watching me! This isn't what I paid $250 for. I should have been looking like a freaking celebrity, not a poster child for Fright Night! I was LIVID and stressed for time now because of her mess up that I had to take over and try to fix. I do makeup on the side for brides and I am honestly still not only traumatized by this but pissed off at myself for not following my gut feeling of doing my makeup myself and just getting my hair done. Everyone told me, why are you having someone else do your makeup when you do it great yourself and your picky? But I didn't listen to myself or others because I felt I'm a bride and want to be pampered! The next day, I still could not shake this, so I contacted Megan, who is very nice and always responds to emails quickly, to tell her my complaint. She refunded me back $75. Though I got some of my money back, I can't get back the fact that I missed out on my first look photos because we were running late me having to still get my dress on with the limo waiting for 15 mins past our pick up time. My advice. Do a trial! If you do your makeup great, do it yourself. Pamper yourself by having your sanity getting ready on your wedding day! Also, give yourself more time to get ready. They told me they work fast and 1pm would be more than enough time for me to be ready and out the door for the limo at 3. That might have been true IF she freakin knew how to do makeup!! Errrrr

LOL, your post reminded me of the listing for a house I was looking at recently.  This is seriously parts of the realtor's zillow auto-biography:

I am the #1 selling waterfront realtor in Tampa Bay, the #1 residential realtor in Tampa Bay and the #2 CENTURY 21 real estate agent in America.  I am one of the most sought after Waterfront Realtors in the Southeast United States.   My clients come from all areas of the U.S., Canada, Latin America and parts of Europe/Asia.

    ...

I am respected and appreciated for my rare blend of marketing, communication and analytical skills and have closed dozens of real estate transactions others thought impossible.
    ...
When you hire me to buy or sell your home, you can be assured that you will have one of the brightest and most professional real estate agents in the country working on your behalf.

ROFL; you'd think she could sell bulls**t to a farmer with a description like that.  I can't imagine who would actually want to do business with someone who talks about themselves like they're God's gift to mankind.

  • I was referred to this company for hair and makeup. I ended up turning them down because of the very high prices they were charging.
Glad I did now! I may book at my hotel salon for my hair and makeup. I often find I don't like makeup other people do on me, so I've been practicing photo-ready makeup. I may still get it done at the salon, but at least if it goes horribly I have an option of redoing it myself.
Does anyone have recommendations of makeup and hair artists in Vegas?
  • Wow! It sounds like I got really lucky based on everything everyone else is saying. I'm really sorry that you guys all had such a negative experience with them. I also got married on May 26th and used Makeup in the 702, but my hair and makeup were perfect. They were a little pricey, but it was worth it for me. I'm wondering if they are sending their less experienced hair and makeup artists on smaller jobs. I had Kiera for makeup and Deb for hair, but they did mine, my 5 bridesmaids and my mother. We all loved the way we looked.

  • Hey Guys - So who do you all recommend - I am absolutely freakin over hair and make-up and who to choose. Help?

  • @jayjaay Mo posted pictures of her trial a couple of months ago and her makeup was amazing! I'm using Beauty by Bri. Her communication is great and I like the pictures of brides she has on her website. Francesca Lombardo is highly reviewed as well but I never heard back from her.

  • @shoebunie thank you I'll check them out - Anyone ever use or using Dollheads?

  • @shoebunnie are you getting hair and make up?  price estimate?  Looking forward to your review!

reinainnyc  thanks for your review!   I have been on the fence about hair and make up.  I can create some pretty awesome looks, and my sister is in cosmetology school.  So i have been on the fence about spending the money or not.  I think I need to find the right place and a reasonable cost.  I want my sister to feel like a guest and not to worry about dragging all of her beauty supplies on vacation with her.  Plus, she just feels like updos weren't her strong point.  I might look into sephore being an option for us, and just buy make up to keep it looking fresh all day when its over.

  • @a13049 I would have to look at my contract but I'm pretty sure it is about 265 including hair, lashes, airbrush makeup and a trial. She also does tattoo coverup for $40

  • @jayjaay I booked with Stevee Danielle after seeing them at a bridal show here in Vegas. $145 hair/makeup, $160 hair/airbrush, $100 trial (which I'm not in love with that price but oh well).

  • So...not to digress, but I have seen a few people post about hotel spa's being good alternatives. Has anyone used Aria or Planet Hollywood's hair and makeup? I am intrigued by the Leiv Agency too.
