Okay so I swore I wasn't going to be that bride ! but here I am looking at the dress I bought and loved while looking back at a style I dream about.

This first one alyce designs style 7223 my fiance and I picked out together. We went shopping for his tux and ended up in the wedding gown store browsing. I picked out a few and hated the whole entire idea of this dress. When trying on all the dresses I thought I liked I ended up not liking them, or they weren't flattering. Well anyone who knows me well enough knows I love vintage and lace well this wasn't it. But i sucked it up and tried it on holy cow I could never have imagined feeling more like a princess. The owner of the shop said it was like made for me (shes known me since i was 5). Walked out to show my fiance and his jaw dropped he didn't say a word just nodded his head. I feel like a princess when I put it on and its very romantic looking.... so here it is, I bought diamond white.

so heres my problem.... I am absolutely in love with an Alfred Angelo modern vintage style 8501 dress I tried on way before I ever saw this dress or purchased it. Its soft lightweight and  romantic looking and totally my idea of vintage. I love its simplicity and right now I found one at an amazing price. Its the dress I in my mind keep going back for. I adore the lace, the unfinished edges and the buttons down the back. there is not a damn thing i would change about it.... so heres this one

So my ordeal is really to stick with the dress my fiance and I fell in love with together or completely surprise him on our wedding day with a gorgeous dress I have dreamed of since getting engaged. I only spent 108.63 on the alyce designs because the shop owner is basically like a grandma to me, and the other one would only be about 140 with my "family" discount. IDK ladies what should I do ?

Re: Battle of the two dresses

  • I love, love, love the first one, but if you love the vintage one more, it's a choice only you can make. Also, it would be easier to choose if we could see you in the dresses to see which looks best on you. Both are gorgeous!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • My taste is number 2 , but you should try it on to make sure then you will know

  • I actually prefer the first dress - I normally don't go for that style, but there's something about it I really like. I hate short sleeves on women, so that kills the 2nd dress for me. I just don't think the 2nd one is as nice and elegant as the first.
  • I'm not clear. Is that you in the second picture? I tried that dress on and it literally looked terrible on me, so if it works for you, I'm glad since it's a beautiful dress! That said, I love the first one!

And you only will have to spend $140?! Yikes. I can't imagine what the markup is since when I tried it on, it was $899.
  • I think it depends on your venue to be honest (and where your heart lies).

The 2nd dress I see more at a small intimate wedding with no extravagant reception.
The 1st dress I would think is more of the large scale wedding and has more of that 'wow' factor

  • The first dress is more my style, but I would have to see both of them on you to give an opinion.
  • It is hard to tell without seeing both on you... from the pictures on the model, I think the first one is my favorite.  It's unique but not over-the-top.

The second one seems much less formal, and I'm personally not a fan of the cap sleeves.
  • You said you tried on both.  How do you feel while in the Alfred Angelo?  The Alyce?

  • Can you afford both? Why not wear one for the ceremony and the other for the reception?
  • I think the first dress has more of a WOW factor. However, both are lovely.
  • It's hard to say without seeing both dresses on you. But I do really like the second one.
  • I vote dress #1.

#2 looks too much like a nightgown.

  • I really like both of them. Dress one is more of my style.

Do you have pictures of yourself in them? That might be helpful.
  • Which did you feel most like a princess in? Which do you think about the most? Don't you think it'd be nice to have a dress your fiance hasn't seen you in?
  • You said you felt like a princess in the first dress... Is that how you want to feel on your wedding day? Some women love that feeling, and some feel awkward or like they're playing a part. They're definitely two different styles, and I think you need to really think about the overall style and emotions you want to evoke when you see yourself, and when others see you. Do you want something a little more fun, princessy, and modern? Or do you want to feel vintage elegance and classically romantic? And then try them both on again and see which one fits how you want to look and feel. The right dress will be the one you don't want to take off, and that you can't get out of your head.

  • I like dress #1, hands down.  It has more of a WOW factor.  Not a fan of the sleeves or upper bodice overlay thing going on in #2.  As a PP mentioned, I feel it's bordering close to the look of a nightgown.
  • I think it depends in part on your venue and formality level, too. The second dress is lovely, but it looks more like "small, understated afternoon wedding in a park" than "grand evening event at _______ ballroom".

    Something to consider.
  • We have narrowed our venue down to either a beach ceremony with big semi formal reception or a winery wedding. Both dress have the classic feel to me.

On an updated note i went back into Alfred Angelo to put on the dress while it looked amazing pinned and clipped the only allure to me now is that it is lace light and airy It felt like a nightgown which isn't the feel I am going for. the other one is just so unique with the unfinished lace on the top and the ruffles throughout the skirt. I'm not a bow person but I love that part too.

thanks everyone for the suggestions it is really helpful !

  • here is the first dress on me. Im trying to find the back its truly gorgeous, we are thinking of adding the cloth buttons down the back to give it a more vintage feel. mainly because I am obsessed with the buttons
  • It's funny, our dresses are very similar with the ruffles on the bottom, and I was actually looking at the AA dress when i was first looking online (I never actually tried it on). I still really like it, actually, but my dress turned out to be such a steal that I couldn't pass it up and I'm not so sure the AA would look good on my curvy figure. I really like the first dress on you, but if at all possible I would ditch the bow/ribbon detail on the bodice.
  • buy both and decide later.... they are so cheap

    This is so funny
  • Update on the battle of the two dresses ! so I took everyone's comments into consideration after trying on the Alfredo Angelo again I realized it looked at felt like a nightgown, but I also realized I was not happy in having a partially lacy dress so I nixed both. I decided on a Jim Hjlem gown its 8763   I adore the full lace and the shape. its simple and romantic and it looks great on me. when i get the dress after alteration i will post pictures

  • the jim hjlem is gorgeous! i would add, since you already bought the other one, i think it's fine to wear two dresses if you want to (for ceremony and reception), or to wear one to a formal rehearsal dinner.

  • I took it to a consignment shop already we thought about doing a trash the dress session with it but I couldn't imagine doing that to such a gorgeous dress that someone else could love. I am so excited to wear my Jim Hjllem, I've been drooling over his gowns for years now !
  • I think you should surprise him....Im sure when he thinks about that day he see's that dress if you feel any prettier in the new dress I say go for it because he will fall more in love with that

  • You made a great choice, the Jim Hjelm is much better quality than the other two and it shows.  Beautiful dress.
  • The Jim Hjelm is gorgeous!!
