Caught off guard (warning: may turn into a religious conversation / has potential to get tense

A friend and I were out to lunch today and we were talking about weddings and marriage in general when she said something that caught me off guard and I had no idea how to act or what to say. She said that a couple can stand in front of the church and go through the ceremony and be pronounced husband and wife by the pastor but that they are not considered legally married or fully married in the eyes of God unless the consummate their marriage and that it must take place the night of the wedding. She said if it is done the next morning they will not be considered fully married since it didn't happen on their wedding night.

Would you have been caught off guard?
How would you have responded?

I'd like to know where she got that information, as it's nowhere in the Bible. Yes, a marriage is consummated through sex, but the when and where isn't spelled out.

I would have been surprised at the comment, and asked where she got that information. If the reply starts with, "Well, so and so said..." I'd tell her she needs to look at scripture.

It's funny (in a way) that you mentioned the Bible. I texted her later (after posting) and she said that the Bible states it, you just have to read through the lines. I instantly put my head on my desk and shook my head. Sigh....

Andplusalso...what about Mary and Joseph? They were married (Matthew 1:24), but didn't consumate their marriage until after Jesus was born, well after the ceremony (Matthew 1:25). So were they not *really* married?

Yes, I would have been very caught off-guard. I can't really see this coming up in a conversation I would have with my friends.

While I'm not a confrontational person, I am not afraid to call out my friends on some things. If we were close enough and I felt like making a big deal of it, I would demand they show me the evidence. More likely, I would express my disbelief more moderately.

Yeah. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it because I was caught off guard and we were in a restaurant so it wouldn't have been the best idea to make a deal out of it. Lol.

weird never heard of that but everyone knows on your wedding night stuff happens unless you are on your cycle and cannot perform those duties
