My husband and I are getting a cat soon and need names. It will probably be female but not sure yet. I'd like something unique. Any suggestions?

Re: Pet names

  • I'd go by kind of what the cat looks like and the personality. You don't want to name your cat sweetie pie-sugar plum when the cats demonic haha. :) JMO.

  • I think it should depend on her personality. For example, my cat ruled my apartment from the moment she walked out of her carrier, so I started with names from medieval European royalty and she responded to Eleanor. I also considered Catherine (with the obvious nickname) and Guinevere (probably Gwen for short).
  • ha, I was totally thinking pet names we call fiance's LOL. I'm no good at naming cats since I never owned one. BUT I'm a pro at naming dogs. I mainly go with what I want depending on their personality.

Ruutu got Ruutu because 1. Jarkko Ruutu is my fav all time hockey player 2. Ruutu acts just like him as in he's a fighter, aggressive and feisty. and 3. he's black and reminds me of a penguin. LOL.

Honey got her name because at the time the word honey annoyed the crap out of my oldest brother, so I made it so he'd have to say it all the time by naming her it. She also fully lives up to her name, loves to cuddle, kiss, and just hang out. Much more mellow than Ruutu

But those are excellent when the cat is being demonic. Along with "corporal cuddling."
  • I really liked the name Daisy, but when I got my cat, she was decidedly not a Daisy. Her name is Thea. It really depends on their personality!

Hahah I just saw an episode from 'My Cat from Hell," I believe and they had named their cat shuggems or something like that. It's very misleading, but kinda funny too :)

Too funny not to share. They probably shouldn't have called him/her Sparkles. LOL

I'd name that one Ninja or Asassin.
  • I like old fashion people names for animal. Ethel, Ruthie, Gertrude, My Dog's names is Fred, for a brief minute we considered Bruce.

  • I got my cat 7 years ago when I was in college and my best friend (MOH now) and I sat there for hours trying to come up with a name and we didn't like any. Finally at like midnight she's like dude I gotta go study and we said fine screw it- Kitty it is! So she got stuck with Kitty but now that she's a tubby we call her either Fatty or Admiral Fatbutt

Do you have a favorite movie character? My bro named his dog Moxon and everyone is like where the heck did you come up with that? He said Jonathon Moxon from Varsity Blues! hahaha

  • I have a cat that I adopted prior to meeting DH. Her name is Pepper. He has a cat from prior to meeting me as well. His name is Gravy. We thought that was an odd coincidence, so we got an "ours" kitty and named him Tater. We had the name prior to the cat, but thankfully, he totally fits the name. His daughter recently rescued a kitty we ended up with and he is Biscuit. Yes- I'm THAT woman. Lol

  • My cats are both named after book characters. My oldest is a tortie tabby and her (full) name is Princess Carline of Crydee or Carline because nobody would use her full title. Our other cat (its actually FI's) is a black cat and his full name is Duke Leto Atreides of Arrakis. but hes just Leto...or Duane Dibbey....but that's another story.

  • Dickens showed up on our doorstep, way too friendly for a feral kitten. His roommate named him Midnight, but we decided on Dickens because he was very "please sir, I want some more" and also was well, a little dickens.

Fizgig he named because when he got him, he was all fur and eyes and teeth, like the character from The Dark Crystal.
  • It really does depend on the cat. My older cat is named
g-girl. She was a stray that I started feeding when I was still living with my parents and my dad told me that I couldnt keep her, and not to name her. So I kept feeding her and decided I had to call her something so I was calling her G since she was gray, and the girl came later after we found out what she was. Well after a while she ended up an inside cat and she already responded to the name so I didnt change it, even though it's odd. We usually just call her G though.
Our other cat is Loki and it fits him very well, but took us about 2 weeks after we adopted to pick it. We played around with Dexter and Diablo before finally choosing Loki.
And our dog, Liam, came with his name from the shelter, but it's perfect for him, so we left it as is.
  • When I adopted my cat his name was O'Malley which I didn't like and he didn't respond to it anyway so I changed it to Spencer.  I just browsed baby name sites to get ideas and I found Spencer after searching for English names (I watch a crap-ton of British TV) and it just seemed to fit.  FI's cat had come with the name Cuddles which he refused to keep and he ended up changing it to Schmutz to semi appease his girlfriend-at-the-time who was Jewish and didn't really want a cat.  She's a siamese so the name also suits her coloring.  Cuddles would not have suited her at all--she is pretty cuddly, but she's also a total diva.  Spencer's just an idiot with a tendency to get lost in the closet.

  • Haha!!! That's amazing!!! Halloween next year!!!
  • I like Alice or Suzie for a girl cat.

I helped my brother name his cat Lucy.  She turned out to be evil so Lucy would occasionally morph into Lucy-fir.

  • We waited to have ours before naming them. Bellamy was originally going to be Denis, but then he was such a Bellamy. Zoe was Cami before we adopted her, but she's such a Zoe. Freya was Gwendolyn before her adopted her, and her attitude requires that she be named after a goddess. Fuckin' Corgis, man. So much attitude in their tiny bodies.

  • It's grey and it's a cute little boy.
  • I've always thought a good cat name is Jupiter.

  • You could go to "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" as well - practicality of the names may be questionable ...
  • I'm not the best at naming cats. My cats names are Kitten and Callie (Callie the calico)
  • The two cats we had we named by how they looked. They both had black faces. One of them had a white line that looked like a smile so we named him Joker. The other had a white patch around one eye, down to his upper lip (nearly half his face) so we named him Phantom, as in Phantom of the Opera.
My old roommate on the other hand was not so great at naming pets. He had three cats that I know of (one at a time), and all of them were named Kiki.

Every time I see a gray cat for some reason I imagine his name is Smokey.  O.o
  • I am a sucker for themed names.  I'm working on the four horsemen of the Apocalypse right now, and after that I might go for Tolkien names.  I've had Pestilence (Pest for short, named in advance and I regretted it because she lived up to that, the little rascal) and currently have Famine (Minnie for short) who also lives up to her name, because she acts like she is constantly starving.  If the trend of my animals living up to their names is accurate, I'm a little worried about Strife and Grim Reaper . . .

Also, Lokitty!  That is hilarious!  I'm going to be giggling about that picture for a while!

  • My boyfriend and I always joke naming cats eitheir meowtins or prof.whiskersworth

  • I agree on waiting to see the cat's personality. It's how my best friend ended up with a cat named Katma (a female green lantern, big comic book fans) as a tiny kitten she strutted out of her carrier, walked up to his 50 lb dog and when the dog leaned down to sniff she swatted the crap out of him. She's fearless, just like a green lantern should be. I have a cat named The Maxx, again comic book reference. He's a big hulking brute with the memory of a gold fish is fiercely loyal/incredibly sweet to the family but often times seems like he's in his own little world.
