Addressing families

How do I address my save the dates to include and entire family. It seems very long. 
Example:
Mr. John Doe and Ms. Jane Smith
Mary Doe, Jack Smith, Jill Smith and Peter Jones

Is this right? They all live together though Jill Smith is 18 years old. This is for Save the Dates, though If I do invites without inner envelopes I'll have the same concern.

    Be very careful about Save the Dates.  Once you have sent them, you are committed to inviting everyone named on the  STD.  If you are absolutely certain that you will invite this entire family, you send the STD to Ms. Jane Doe and Mr. John Smith, assuming that they are married.  If they are not married, their names go on separate lines without the "and".  I would add the note "The kids will be invited, too!"  The older girl gets her own STD and invitation.

    Just an afterthought:  My earlier post was for the STDs, not for formal invitations.  On the formal invitation, you must list everyone's name who is invited on the inner envelope.  Sorry if I was vague.

    Ms. Jane Doe and Mr. Jack Smith
    Mr. Peter Jones

    @Senecaf, i'm also not doing inner envelopes for my invites, so I hope someone has answers. My FI's sister is getting married in August after our wedding. She has 3 kids, and he has 1. No idea how to properly address them on an outer envelope!

    If you are not using inner envelopes, you can address the invitation to the two of them if they are living together.  Then put in an insert to say, "John, Jane, Susie and Bill are also invited."
    If they are not living together, then you can send them separate invitations, and it will simplify things.

    @CMGragain, so you can't put Jane Doe & family or something of the sort instead of paying for yet another insert and possibly more postage because of the extra weight?

    It is usually a bad idea to put "Jane Doe and family" on an invitation because her interpretation of "and family" might include people whom you did not intend to invite.  (Grandma?  Uncle Ed?)
    You don't need to pay for fancy inserts.  A handwritten note on a small piece of plain paper inserted in the invitation will do nicely.  For my daughter's wedding, I added the note to the small card we used to direct people to her wedding website.
