Informal bridesmaids dresses with more formal bride/groom?

I have always envisioned my bridesmaids wearing really really casual dresses - the kind that someone truly can wear again.  This is especially important to me because one of my girls has a VERY strict budget and I want to respect that by not making her spend a ton of money on a dress she'll never have a reason to wear again. I have never even considered making them long dresses, always wanted knee length. And my girls are polar opposite body types so there's no way they're all fitting in the same cut of dress, so they get to pick their own.

Problem is, by random coincidence, everyone else's attire is ending up very formal.  I had planned on wearing a simple A-line, but after trying on dresses it turns out I am super girly and LOVE formal ball gowns with tons of sparkle.  My fiancee has decided he either wants a "James Bond" tux, or his military uniform that is also very very formal (not the uniform you usually think of - this one involves tails and is cut like a tux) - the best man would be in this uniform as well.

So will it look off to have the bridesmaids so informal? Any tips on increasing their formality while still letting them get a casual dress? I'd like to avoid the "you can totally hem it and then wear it again" dresses because, let's be honest, no one actually does that.

  • kudos to you for being sensitive to your BM needs. BM dresses don't have to match each other, and I think knee length dresses would look just fine. GL!
  • Target online has some really cute bridesmaid dresses - you could always look there.  I know I just did a google image search on 'patterned bridesmaid dresses' and a lot of 'informal' options came up - so you may be able to get a better idea.

  • My dress is formal and FI/ the groomsmen are wearing tuxes. I really wanted short BM dresses and ended up choosing a fabric that David's Bridal calls "cotton sateen." At first I was a little nervous they might not be formal enough, but by the time they are carrying flowers and all, it's not like anyone is not going to recognize them as bridal party.

I was originally going to do everyone the same color but different dress, as the BM's range from size 2 to 20. However, the same dress truly looks great on all of them, so we are doing same dress in different colors. When we went to buy them, they were on sale and I very nearly bought one for myself, as I could definitely see wearing it again. I think short dress & less dressy fabric = more likely to wear again. Also, no one in my bridal party needs alterations, which is not usually the case with a long dress, and this also helps the budget.

Here they are in case you like them - price is $79.99 now: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Short-Strapless-Cotton-Sateen-Dress-39261_Bridal-Party-Bridesmaids-Short-Bridesmaid-Dresses
  • Try department stores. My girls got their dresses at Macy's for $60 and have worn them again. One of them liked the style so much she bought 2 more in different colors.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Nice jewelry or maybe some glitter shoes/boots or something could help spice them up..
