Pet names

Re: Pet names

  • We adopted FI's late aunt's cats.

The tabby is named Mopsey (though we call her Mops for short, and when she whines, we tease her by calling her "the Mops" (as in, Woe is the Mops!) I occasionally call her pretty girl and Princess (she believes she's the queen, thank you). She responds to Mops, Mopsey, and Princess.

The tuxedo is named Squirt. (not sure if squirt guns were used on her as a kitten, but considering getting one considering the number of times she's recently started jumping on the dining table to knock crap off and play with it!) I will refer to her as baby girl and Squirty, occasionally Squirt-ball. She responds to Squirt and Squirty.

FI was calling them Pest (Mopsey- pestilence) and Filth (Squirt) when we were dealing with a Flea problem.

FI's parents rescued a solid black cat/miniature panther named Mortimer (The cat stands over 1.5 ft tall and is 22 lbs of muscle and fur). He's now regularly called Morty and responds to it.

FBIL adopted FI's parent's cat, Shaggy (FI's folks also have a yorkie named Scooby Doo) when Shaggy got super attached to FBIL's kitten. Said kitten, a ragdoll, is named Andy (after raggedy andy). Shaggy also responds to Shag, though with his recent "mean old man" stunts, FBIL and FSIL have apparently been calling him @$$hole.

  • I have a cat named Tux because he is a Tuxedo cat.

I have another cat named Katsa from the book Graceling, It is a very fitting name, because my cat is a natural born killer.

  • I am a huge fan of "people names" for animals.  I could never give my cat a ridiculous name I'd get tired of.

    Late and great cats:
Auliyah (named after a princess in a book my dad was reading)
    Marley (as in Bob)

    My cats now:
Stella (from Stellaluna, one of my sister's favorite childhood books)
Jack (short for Shoeless Joe Jackson of White Sox fame, because he is a tuxedo cat with white socks.  He's the only one named for how he looks, thanks to FI)

  • My BFF loves Broadway and he names his cats after characters from musicals. He currently has two cats. A white one named Glinda (who we call Gigi) and black one with green eyes named Elphaba (aka Elphie).
  • Never had a cat but my dogs name is Emma Rose. I'm driving FI crazy for a puppy. If it's a boy we'll name is Melo (after Carmelo Anthony) and if it's a girl I want to name her Mia.

  • We have two cats, our Tabby is named Trillian, Trilly for short and our gray cat is Graycie.

  • Funny story: When I saw the kitten, I decided I wanted to name something unique. The obvious name for him would've been Mittens because he's grey with white paws, but I couldn't call him that. H sees him and he says he's thinking Mittens would be a good name. That name got vetoed pretty darn quick.

    His name is Kenshi.
  • My cats name is Tanqueray because I LOVE gin and tonics lol. But we call him Tango for short he only hears his full name when he is naughty. haha. If we ever get another cat I want to name him cash or tonic to go with the other name :D
  • Growing up, our female cats were always named after spices/flavors (cinnamon, ginger, butterscotch). I decided to keep with the tradition and named my cat Coriander, but we call her Cora. When FI and I adopted our second cat, he put a picture up on his FB page and asked for name suggestions. I wanted to name him Thor, but our friend's suggestion to name him Callahan (after one of FI's favorite hockey players) won out.

  • I also am a fan of people names for pets over cutesy names.

My cat is Dinah (also the name of the cat from Alice in Wonderland, which I didn't realize when I named her). Other cat's I've had have been Andy, Milo and Crystal.

Dinah also has a lot of "nicknames" that are longer than her regular name, such as Dinahsaurus Rex or sometimes just Dinahsaur, Lumpkin, Stinklet, Nuggethead, etc. She is probably completely confused by the many names I call her, but she always seems to know I'm talking about her.
