Added sash that was NOT originally there

I am considering buying a simple dress and adding a black lace sash.. HOWEVER, I am curious if anyone out there recommends buying a certain type of material[lace, satin, taffeta] or has any other suggestions or opinions on doing such..?

    Are you going to attach it to the dress or just tie it around your waist?  Either way I think as long as it goes with your dress it wouldn't matter.  Your seamstress would be able to guide you as to what fabric to avoid.

    Wait - fabric suggestions for your sash fabric or for your dress fabric? 

    I would recommend just getting a tie sash and see how you like it on the dress.
