Photog registry

My fiance and I are in our 40s.  His 2nd marraige, my 1st.  We've been living together for 3+ years.  Between the 2 of us, we need nothing, so we were not planning on doing any bridal shower or registries for gifts.   Then my photographer let me know that she offers a gift registry....and the prices of the finished products are a lot higher than I expected, so it would be something I could use.  Now I'm debating setting up the registry for the photographer, but am also worried about it being tacky.   Opinions?   Thanks!

Re: Photog registry

  • I wouldn't do it.  You can take the pictures you get and create lovely photo prints, canvas prints, wood prints, photo blocks, etc online at places like Shutterfly and York Photo.  Their prices are reasonable, especially if you have the patience to wait for a sale.

  • I think it's tacky. It makes it seem like you can't afford your own wedding. You're always free to use any cash gifts you get to buy additional photos.

And I'd be ticked at the photog for suggesting it. She's locking in sales of printed photos/books/whatevs before you even see if you like the photos. Smarmy.

I'm gonna go with tacky. It feels why too much like fundraising for your wedding. I wouldn't do it.

  • Yeah, its kinda tacky. Just make sure whatever package you get includes high res images without watermarks.

  • I think suggesting that guests fund any part of the wedding at which you intend to host them is very tacky.

This, 100%.  What if you aren't pleased with her photos and don't want prints of them?  Or what if people give more money to it (don't know why, I wouldn't give money to it, but just in case it happens) than you want to spend on photos or books?
  • Another vote for NO for the same aforementioned reasons.
  • Dislike.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Thanks all.  My initial thought was "tacky".  Since it seems to be unanimous, I'll politely decline her offer.   She does offer high res CD for my own printing options, but I was floored at the cost.  To be fair to her...her prices aren't bad compared to others.  I guess I was just overly naive on how much that stuff costs (fell short on my research there).
  • Another no vote here.

We opted to just get the CD with all our images (all 500+ of them, fun to go through that! lol). Our photographer was actually very cheap but we were not about to pay over $300 for an album. We took the CD, ordered prints and a photobook from walmart for $35. We could have spent more and gotten a more professional looking book but that wasn't a big deal to us, we love how ours came out. We got a 16x20 canvas for $20, but regular price was only $40 which is great. So I vote for printing your own pictures. That way you get all your photos and you can choose which you'd like printed without forgoing the other pictures you didn't choose.

And yeah, another vote for no on the photographer registry. Are you already locked into a contract?

After 6 years and 2 boys, finally tying the knot on October 27th, 2013!
